ther.
■The Safe exit ass ist is opera-
tional when
The Safe exit assist is operational
when all of the following conditions
are met:
●When the power switch is ON,
less than 3 minutes have elapsed
since the hybrid system was off, or
less than 3 minutes have elapsed
since a door was opened and
someone has enter ed the vehicle
(the time which op eration is possi-
ble may be extended if a door is
opened and closed)
●Safe exit assist is on
●The vehicle is stopped.
●The shift lever is in a position
other than R.
■The Safe exit assist will detect a
vehicle when
The Safe exit assist will detect a
vehicle present in the detection area
in the followin g situations:
●When the vehicle is stopped and a
vehicle or bicycle, which is travel-
ing parallel to the vehicle, is
approaching within the area that a
door opens (other than the back
door)
■Conditions under which the
system will not detect a vehicle
●Safe exit assist does not detect
the following objects, vehicles,
and bicycles:
• Vehicles or bicycles which are
approaching slowly
*
• Vehicles or bicycles which are determined to have a low possibil-
ity of colliding wit h a door (other
than the back door) when opened
*
• Vehicles or bicycles which are approaching from directly behind*
• Vehicles or bicycles which are approaching from the front*
• Guardrails, walls, signs, parked vehicles, and other stationary
objects
*
• Pedestrians, animals, etc.*
*
: Depending on the conditions, detection of a vehicle and/orobject
may occur.
●In situations such as the following,
safe exit assist will not operate:
• When 3 minutes or more have elapsed since the hybrid system
off (the time which operation is
possible may be extended if a
door is opened and closed)
• When your vehicle is not com- pletely stopped
2924-6. Driving tips
excess ice or snow that may
have accumulated on the
exterior lights, outside rear
view mirrors, windows, vehi-
cle’s roof, chassis, around the
tires or on the brakes.
Remove any snow or mud
from the bottom of your shoes
before getting in the vehicle.
Accelerate the vehicle slowly,
keep a safe distance between
you and the vehicle ahead, and
drive at a reduced speed suit-
able to road conditions.
Turn automatic mode of the
parking brake off. Otherwise,
the parking brake may freeze
and not be able to be
released automatically.
Also, avoid using the following as
the parking brake may operate
automatically, even if automatic
mode is off.
• Brake hold system
Park the vehicle and shift the
shift lever to P without setting
the parking brake. The park-
ing brake may freeze up, pre-
venting it from being released.
If the vehicle is parked without
setting the parking brake,
make sure to block the
wheels.
Failure to do so may be dan- gerous because it may cause
the vehicle to move unexpect-
edly, possibly leading to an
accident.
When the parking brake is in
automatic mode, release the
parking brake after shifting
the shift lever to P. ( P.186)
Turn off the power switch while
pressing the parking brake switch.
If the vehicle is parked without
setting the parking brake,
confirm that the shift lever
cannot be moved out of P.
If the vehicle is left parked
with the brakes damp in cold
temperatures, there is a pos-
sibility of the brakes freezing.
Tire chains cannot be mounted.
Snow tires should be used
instead.When driving the vehicle

side windows quickly, turn the air
flow and temperature up.
To return to the previous mode,
press the windshield defogger
switch again when the windshield is
defogged.
When the windshield defogger
switch is on, the indicator illumi-
nates on the windshield defogger
switch.
■Defogging the rear window
and outside rear view mir-
rors
Defoggers are used to defog the
rear window, and to remove
raindrops, dew and frost from
the outside rear view mirrors.
Press the rear window and out-
side rear view mirror defoggers
switch.
The defoggers will automatically
turn off after a while.
When the rear window and outside
rear view mirror defoggers switch is
on, the indicator illuminates on the
rear window and ou tside rear view
mirror defoggers switch.
■Eco air conditioning mode
The air conditioning is controlled
with low fuel consumption priori-
tized such as reducing fan
speed, etc.
Press the eco air conditioning
mode switch.
When the eco air conditioning
mode is on, the indicator illumi-
nates on the eco air conditioning
mode switch.
■When the outside temperature
exceeds 75°F (24°C) and the air
conditioning system is on
●In order to reduce the air condi-
tioning power consumption, the air
conditioning system may switch to
recirculated air mode automati-
cally. This may also reduce fuel
consumption.
●Recirculated air mode is selected
as a default mode when the power
switch is turned to ON.
●It is possible to switch to outside
air mode at any time by pressing
the outside air mode switch.
■Fogging up of the windows
●The windows will easily fog up
when the humidity in the vehicle is
high. Turning “A/C” on will dehu-
midify the air from the outlets and
defog the windshield effectively.
●If you turn “A/C” off, the windows
may fog up more easily.
●The windows may fog up if the
recirculated air mode is used.
■When driving on dusty roads
Close all windows. If dust thrown up
by the vehicle is still drawn into the
vehicle after closing the windows, it
is recommended that the air intake
mode be set to outside air mode and
the fan speed to a ny setting except
off.
■Outside/recirculated air mode
●Setting to the recirculated air
mode temporarily is recom-
mended in preventing dirty air
from entering the vehicle interior
and helping to c ool the vehicle
when the outside air temperature
is high.
●Outside/recirculated air mode may
automatically switch depending on
the temperature setting or the
inside temperature.

Fan speed is adjusted automati-
cally according to the temperature setting and the ambient conditions.
Therefore, the fan may stop for a
while until warm or
cool air is ready
to flow immediately after the auto-
matic mode switch pressed.
This function automatically con-
trols the air conditioning airflow
so that priority is given to the
front seats. Unnecessary air
conditioning is suppressed, con-
tributing to increased fuel effi-
ciency.
Front seat concentrated airflow
mode operates in the following
situations.
