6.Allow the belt to retract to removeslack. The belt clicks as it retracts toindicate it is in the automatic lockingmode.
7.Try to pull the seatbelt out of theretractor to make sure the retractor isin the automatic locking mode (youshould not be able to pull more beltout). If the retractor is not locked,unbuckle the belt and repeat Steps 5and 6.
8.Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint as youpull up on the shoulder belt to forceslack from the belt. This is necessaryto remove the remaining slack thatexists once you add the extra weightof the child to the child restraint. It alsohelps to achieve the proper snugnessof the child restraint to your vehicle.Sometimes, a slight lean toward thebuckle helps to remove remaining slackfrom the belt.
9.Attach the tether strap (if the childrestraint is equipped).
10.Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward andback to make sure the seat is securelyheld in place.
To check this, grab the seat at the belt pathand attempt to move it side to side andforward and back. There should be nomore than 1 in (2.5 cm) of movement forproper installation.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger SafetyTechnician to make certain the childrestraint is properly installed. In Canada,check with Transport Canada for referralto a Child Car Seat Clinic.

Sport Mode (S)
Switch on sport mode by shifting thetransmission selector lever to sport (S). Insport (S), the transmission selects theoptimum gear for best performance. Thisgear selection is typically lower than thatof drive (D), and the shifts are faster.
Tow Mode
To switch on tow mode, pressthe button on the center consoleuntil tow mode is active. Theindicator light illuminates in the instrumentcluster when the system becomes active.
The tow mode feature:
•Moves upshifts to higher engine speedsto reduce the frequency oftransmission shifting.
•Provides engine braking in all forwardgears, which slows your vehicle andassists you in controlling your vehiclewhen descending a slope.
•Depending on driving conditions andload conditions, may downshift thetransmission, slow your vehicle andcontrol your vehicle speed whendescending a hill, without pressing theaccelerator pedal. The amount ofdownshift braking provided variesbased upon the amount you press thebrake pedal.
The tow mode feature improvestransmission operation when towing atrailer or a heavy load. All transmissiongear ranges are available when using towmode.
To switch off the tow mode feature andreturn to normal driving mode, press thebutton on the center console twice. Theindicator light turns off when the systemturns off. Tow mode also turns off whenyou power down your vehicle.
SelectShift™ AutomaticTransmission
This feature gives you the ability to changegears up or down as desired.
If the engine speed does not exceed themaximum allowable limit, the vehicleallows the downshifts. SelectShiftautomatically downshifts at low enginespeeds to prevent engine stalls.
Note:Engine damage could occur if youmaintain excessive engine revving withoutshifting.
SelectShift does not automatically upshift,even if the engine is approaching the RPMlimit.
For 10 speed transmissions - with thetransmission selector lever in sport (S)position:
•Press the (+) button on thetransmission selector lever to upshift.

Emergency Towing
If your vehicle becomes inoperable withoutaccess to wheel dollies, a car-haulingtrailer or a flatbed transport vehicle, youcan flat-tow with all wheels on the ground,regardless of the powertrain andtransmission configuration, under thefollowing conditions:
•Your vehicle is facing forward fortowing in a forward direction.
•Place the transmission in neutral (N).If you cannot move the transmissioninto neutral (N), you may need tooverride the gear shifter. SeeAutomatic Transmission (page 161).
•Maximum speed is 35 mph (55 km/h).
•Maximum distance is 50 mi (80 km).
Recreational Towing
WARNING: Do not disconnect thebattery when recreationally towing yourvehicle. This prevents the transfer casefrom shifting properly and could causethe vehicle to roll, even if thetransmission is in park (P).
WARNING: Placing the transfercase in its neutral position could causeyour vehicle to freely roll. Make sure youpress and hold the brake pedal and thevehicle is in a secure, safe position whenyou place the transfer case in its neutralposition.
Follow these guidelines if you have a needfor recreational towing. An example ofrecreational towing would be towing yourvehicle behind a motorhome. Theseguidelines are to make sure that you donot damage the transmission.
You can only tow your vehicle with allwheels on the ground by placing thetransfer case in its neutral position andengaging the recreational tow feature.Perform the following steps afterpositioning your vehicle behind the towvehicle and properly securing themtogether.
Note:Put your climate control system inrecirculated air mode to prevent exhaustfumes from entering your vehicle.
Note:Failure to put the transfer case in itsneutral position can damage vehiclecomponents.

Notice to utility vehicle and truckowners
WARNING: Utility vehicles have asignificantly higher rollover rate thanother types of vehicles.
WARNING: Vehicles with a highercenter of gravity (utility and four-wheeldrive vehicles) handle differently thanvehicles with a lower center of gravity(passenger cars). Avoid sharp turns,excessive speed and abrupt steering inthese vehicles. Failure to drive cautiouslyincreases the risk of losing control of yourvehicle, vehicle rollover, personal injuryand death.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly morelikely to die than a person wearing aseatbelt.
WARNING: Do not becomeoverconfident in the ability of four-wheeldrive vehicles. Although a four-wheeldrive vehicle may accelerate better thana two-wheel drive vehicle in low tractionsituations, it won't stop any faster thantwo-wheel drive vehicles. Always driveat a safe speed.
Utility vehicles and trucks handledifferently than passenger cars in thevarious driving conditions that areencountered on streets, highways andoff-road. Utility vehicles and trucks are notdesigned for cornering at speeds as highas passenger cars any more than low-slungsports cars are designed to performsatisfactorily under off-road conditions.
Study your owner's manual and anysupplements for specific information aboutequipment features, instructions for safedriving and additional precautions toreduce the risk of an accident or seriousinjury.
Four-wheel drive system (If Equipped)
A vehicle equipped with four-wheel drive(when selected) has the ability to use allfour wheels to power itself. This increasestraction which could enable you to safelydrive over terrain and road conditions thata conventional two-wheel drive vehiclecannot.
On some four-wheel drive models, theinitial shift from two-wheel drive tofour-wheel drive while the vehicle ismoving can cause a momentary clunk andratcheting sound. These sounds are normalas the front drivetrain comes up to speedand are not cause for concern.
Note:In four-wheel drive vehicles, the sizeof the spare tire relative to the remainingtires can have an effect on the 4x4 system'sability to engage and disengage.
Operating 4WD Vehicles with aSpare tire or Mismatched Tires
On four-wheel drive vehicles, the size ofthe spare tire can affect the 4X4 system.If there is a significant difference betweenthe size of the spare tire and the remainingtires, the four-wheel drive functionality willbe limited.
When driving with the full-size dissimilarspare wheel and tire assembly, werecommend that you do not:
•Exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) with 4WDmode turned on.
•Turn on a 4WD mode unless thevehicle is stationary.
•Use 4WD mode on dry pavement.

How your vehicle differs fromother vehicles
Sport utility vehicles and trucks can differfrom some other vehicles in a fewnoticeable ways. Your vehicle could be:
•Higher - to allow higher load carryingcapacity and to allow it to travel overrough terrain without damagingunderbody components.
•Shorter - to give it the capability toapproach inclines and drive over thecrest of a hill without damagingunderbody components. All otherthings held equal, a shorter wheelbasecould make your vehicle quicker torespond to steering inputs than avehicle with a longer wheelbase.
•Narrower - to provide greatermaneuverability in tight spaces,particularly in off-road use.
As a result of the above dimensionaldifferences, Sport utility vehicles andtrucks often will have a higher center ofgravity and a greater difference in centerof gravity between the loaded andunloaded condition. These differences thatmake your vehicle so versatile also makeit handle differently than an ordinarypassenger car.
