and increase vehicle
emissions. Diagnosis and
service may be required.
To help prevent damage,
reduce vehicle speed and
avoid hard accelerations and
uphill grades. If towing a
trailer, reduce the amount of
cargo being hauled as soon as
possible.
If the light continues to flash,
find a safe place to park. Turn
the vehicle off and wait at
least 10 seconds before
restarting the engine. If the
light is still flashing, follow the
previous guidelines and see
your dealer for service as
soon as possible.
If the light is on steady :A
malfunction has been
detected. Diagnosis and
service may be required.
Check the following:
.If fuel has been added to the
vehicle using the capless fuel
funnel adapter, make sure
that it has been removed. See
“Filling the Tank with a
Portable Gas Can” under
Filling the Tank 0356. The
diagnostic system can
detect if the adapter has
been left installed in the
vehicle, allowing fuel to
evaporate into the
atmosphere. A few driving
trips with the adapter
removed may turn off the
light.
.Poor fuel quality can cause
inefficient engine operation
and poor driveability, which
may go away once the
engine is warmed up. If this
occurs, change the fuel
brand. It may require at least
one full tank of the proper
fuel to turn the light off. See
Recommended Fuel (LSY
2.0L L4 Turbo Engine) 0354
or
Recommended Fuel (L3B
2.7L L4 Turbo and LF4 3.6L
V6 Twin Turbo Engines)
0 355.
If the light remains on, see
your dealer.
Emissions Inspection and
Maintenance Programs
If the vehicle requires an
Emissions Inspection/
Maintenance test, the test
equipment will likely connect
to the vehicle's Data Link
Connector (DLC).
The DLC is under the
instrument panel to the left of
the steering wheel.
Connecting devices that are
not used to perform an
Emissions Inspection/
Maintenance test or to service
the vehicle may affect vehicle
operation. See Add-On
Electrical Equipment 0366.
See your dealer if assistance
is needed.

214 Infotainment System
When Teen Driver is Active:
.If equipped, the radio will
mute when the driver seat
belt, and in some vehicles
the front passenger seat
belt, is not buckled. The
audio from any device paired
to the vehicle will also be
muted.
.An object placed on the
front passenger seat, such
as a briefcase, handbag,
grocery bag, laptop, or other
electronic device, could
cause the passenger
sensing system to falsely
sense an unbuckled front
passenger and mute the
radio. If this happens,
remove the object from the
seat. See Passenger
Sensing System066.
.Some safety systems, such
as Automatic Emergency
Braking, if equipped, cannot
be turned off.
.The gap setting for Adaptive
Cruise Control and alert
timing for Forward Collision
Alert, if equipped, cannot be
changed.
.When trying to change a
safety feature that is not
configurable in Teen Driver,
the feature may be grayed
out or removed from the
infotainment menu, or the
DIC will display a message
indicating that Teen Driver is
active and the action is not
available.
.Super Cruise, if equipped, is
not available.
.Enhanced Low Fuel Warning
(if equipped) –When the
vehicle is low on fuel, the low
fuel light on the instrument
cluster flashes and the DIC
low fuel warning cannot be
dismissed.
.Do not tow a trailer if
equipped with Automatic
Emergency Braking. Report Card
The vehicle owner must
secure the driver’s consent to
record certain vehicle data
when the vehicle is driven with
a registered Teen Driver key.
There is one Report Card per
vehicle. Data is only recorded
when a registered Teen Driver
key is used to operate the
vehicle.
The Report Card data is
collected from the time Teen
Driver is activated or the last
time the Report Card was
reset. The following items may
be recorded:
.Distance Driven
–the total
distance driven.
.Maximum Speed –the
maximum vehicle speed
detected.
.Overspeed Warnings –the
number of times the speed
warning setting was
exceeded.

268 Driving and Operating
Warning (Continued)
It is dangerous to get out of
the vehicle if the shift lever
is not fully in P (Park) with
the parking brake firmly set.
The vehicle can roll.
Do not leave the vehicle
when the engine is running.
If you have left the engine
running, the vehicle can
move suddenly. You or
others could be injured. To
be sure the vehicle will not
move, even when you are on
fairly level ground, always
set the parking brake and
move the shift lever to
P (Park). See Shifting Into
Park (Mechanical Shifter)
0267 or
Shifting Into Park (Electronic
Shifter) 0268. If you are
towing a trailer, see Driving
Characteristics and Towing
Tips 0358. If you have to leave the vehicle
with the engine running, be
sure the vehicle is in P (Park)
and the parking brake is set
before you leave it. After you
have moved the shift lever
into P (Park), hold the regular
brake pedal down. Then, see if
you can move the shift lever
away from P (Park) without
first pressing the button.
If you can, it means that the
shift lever was not fully locked
in P (Park).
Torque Lock
Torque lock is when the
weight of the vehicle puts too
much force on the parking
pawl in the transmission. This
happens when parking on a hill
and shifting the transmission
into P (Park) is not done
properly and then it is difficult
to shift out of P (Park). To
prevent torque lock, set the
parking brake and then shift
into P (Park). To find out how,
see
“Shifting Into Park” listed
previously. If torque lock does occur, your
vehicle may need to be pushed
uphill by another vehicle to
relieve the parking pawl
pressure, so you can shift out
of P (Park).
Shifting Into Park
(Electronic Shifter)
To shift into P (Park):
1. Hold the brake pedal down and set the parking brake.
See Electric Parking Brake
0287.
2. Press the button on top of the shift lever to shift into
P (Park). See Automatic
Transmission (Mechanical
Shifter) 0272 or
Automatic Transmission
(Electronic Shifter) 0275.
3. The P indicator on the shift lever will turn red when the
vehicle is in P (Park).
If the vehicle is shifted into
P (Park) on a hill, the
Electric Parking Brake
(EPB) may apply

Shifting out of Park
(Mechanical Shifter)
This vehicle is equipped with
an electronic shift lock release
system. The shift lock release
is designed to prevent
movement of the shift lever
out of P (Park), unless the
ignition is on and the brake
pedal is applied.
The shift lock release is always
functional except in the case
of an uncharged or low
voltage (less than 9 volt)
battery.
If the vehicle has an
uncharged battery or a
battery with low voltage, try
charging or jump starting the
battery. See Jump Starting -
North America 0447 for more
information.
To shift out of P (Park):
1. Apply the brake pedal.
2. Release the parking brake. See Electric Parking Brake
0287.

Caution
Shifting to R (Reverse) while
the vehicle is moving
forward could damage the
transmission. The repairs
would not be covered by the
vehicle warranty. Shift to
R (Reverse) only after the
vehicle is stopped.
R : Use this gear to back up.
At low vehicle speeds,
R (Reverse) can be used to
rock the vehicle back and forth
to get out of snow, ice, or sand
without damaging the
transmission. See If the
Vehicle Is Stuck 0255.
N : In this position, the engine
does not connect with the
wheels. To restart the engine
when the vehicle is already
moving, use N (Neutral) only.
{Warning
Shifting into a drive gear
while the engine is running
at high speed is dangerous.
Unless your foot is firmly on
the brake pedal, the vehicle
could move very rapidly. You
could lose control and hit
people or objects. Do not
shift into a drive gear while
the engine is running at high
speed.
Caution
Shifting out of P (Park) or
N (Neutral) with the engine
running at high speed may
damage the transmission.
The repairs would not be
covered by the vehicle
warranty. Be sure the
engine is not running at high
speed when shifting the
vehicle.

switch is pressed. If the switch
is pressed until the vehicle
comes to a stop, the EPB will
remain applied.
The vehicle may automatically
apply the EPB in some
situations when the vehicle is
not moving. This is normal, and
is done to periodically checkthe correct operation of the
EPB system, or at the request
of other safety functions that
utilize the EPB.
If the EPB fails to apply, block
the rear wheels to prevent
vehicle movement.
EPB Release
To release the EPB:
1. Turn the ignition on or to accessory mode.
2. Apply and hold the brake pedal.
3. Press the EPB switch momentarily.
The EPB is released when the
red parking brake status light
is off.
If the amber service parking
brake warning light is on,
release the EPB by pressing
and holding the EPB switch.
Continue to hold the switch
until the red parking brake
status light is off. If either light
stays on after release is
attempted, see your dealer.
Caution
Driving with the parking
brake on can overheat the
brake system and cause
premature wear or damage
to brake system parts. Make
sure that the parking brake
is fully released and the
brake warning light is off
before driving.
If you are towing a trailer and
parking on a hill, see Driving
Characteristics and Towing
Tips 0358.
Automatic EPB Release
The EPB will automatically
release if the vehicle is
running, placed into gear, and
an attempt is made to drive
away. Avoid rapid acceleration
when the EPB is applied, to
preserve parking brake
lining life.
The EPB can also be used to
prevent roll back for vehicles
with a manual transmission
