1-2. Child safety
■When installing a child
restraint system to a front pas-
senger seat
For the safety of a child, install a
child restraint system to a rear seat.
When installing a child restraint
system to a front passenger seat is
unavoidable, adjust the seat as fol-
lows and install the child restraint
system:
Move the front seat fully rear-
ward.
Adjust the seat height to the
upper most position.
Adjust the seatback angle to the
most upright position.
When installing a forward-facing child
WARNING
●For effective protection in automo- bile accidents and sudden stops, a
child must be properly restrained, using a seat belt or child restraint system which is correctly installed.
For installation details, refer to the operation manual enclosed with the child restraint system. General
installation instruction is provided in this manual.
●Toyota strongly urges the use of a proper child restraint system that conforms to the weight and size of
the child, installed on the rear seat. According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly
restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat.
●Holding a child in your or someone else’s arms is not a substitute for a child restraint system. In an acci-
dent, the child can be crushed against the windshield or between the holder and the interior of the
vehicle.
■Handling the child restraint sys-
tem
If the child restraint system is not properly fixed in place, the child or
other passengers may be seriously injured or even killed in the event of sudden braking, sudden swerving, or
an accident.
●If the vehicle were to receive a
strong impact from an accident, etc., it is possible that the child restraint system has damage that is
not readily visible. In such cases, do not reuse the restraint system.
●Depending on the child restraint system, installation may be difficult or impossible. In those cases,
check whether the child restraint system is suitable for installment in the vehicle. ( P.51) Be sure to
install and observe the usage rules after carefully reading the child restraint system fixing method in
this manual, as well as the opera- tion manual enclosed with the child restraint system.
●Keep the child restraint system properly secured on the seat even if
it is not in use. Do not store the child restraint system unsecured in the passenger compartment.
●If it is necessary to detach the child restraint system, remove it from the
vehicle or store it securely in the luggage compartment.

1-4. Hybrid system
There is an air intake vent under
the left side of the rear seat for the
purpose of cooling the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery). If the vent
becomes blocked, the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery) input and out-
put may be reduced.
When a certain level of impact is
detected by the impact sensor, the
emergency shut off system blocks
the high voltage current and stops
the fuel pump to minimize the risk
of electrocution and fuel leakage. If
the emergency shut off system acti-
WARNING
When reselling or handing over your vehicle, the possibility of an accident
is extremely high because the person receiving the vehicle may not be aware of these dangers.
●If your vehicle is disposed of with-out the hybrid battery having been
removed, there is a danger of seri- ous electric shock if high voltage parts, cables and their connectors
are touched. In the event that your vehicle must be disposed of, the hybrid battery must be disposed of
by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer. If the hybrid bat-
tery is not disposed of properly, it may cause electric shock that can result in death or serious injury.
NOTICE
■Hybrid battery (traction battery) air intake vent
Do not carry large amounts of water such as water cooler bottles in the vehicle. If water spills onto the hybrid
battery (traction battery), the battery may be damaged. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) air intake vent
NOTICE
■Hybrid battery (traction battery) air intake vent
●Make sure that the air intake vent is not blocked, such as by a seat cover, plastic cover, or luggage. If
the vent is blocked, the hybrid bat- tery (traction battery) input and out-put may be restricted, possibly
leading to a malfunction.
●Clean the air intake vent regularly
to prevent the hybrid battery (trac- tion battery) from overheating.
●Do not get water or foreign materi-als in the air intake vent as this may cause a short circuit and damage
the hybrid battery (traction battery).
●A filter is installed to the air intake
vent. When the filter remains noticeably dirty even after cleaning the air intake vent, filter cleaning or
replacement is recommended. Refer to P.348 for details on how to clean the filters.

The doors cannot be locked and unlocked using the entry function or wireless remote control. Lock or unlock
the doors using the mechanical key. ( P.408)
■Rear seat reminder function
●In order to remind you not to forget luggage, etc., in the rear seat, when the power switch is turned to OFF
after any of the following conditions are met, a buzzer will sound and a message will be displayed on the
multi-information display for approxi- mately 6 seconds.
• The hybrid system is started within 10
minutes after opening and closing a rear door.• A rear door has been opened and
closed after the hybrid system was started.
However, if a rear door is opened and
then closed within approximately 2 sec-
onds, the rear seat reminder function
may not operate.
●The rear seat reminder function deter- mines that luggage, etc., has been placed in a rear seat based on open-
ing and closing of a rear door. There- fore, depending on the situation, the rear seat reminder function may not
operate and you may still forget lug- gage, etc., in the rear seat, or it may operate unnecessarily.
●The rear seat reminder function can be enabled/disabled. ( P.431)
■Customization
Some functions can be customized. ( P.431)
WARNING
■To prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.Failure to do so may result in a door
opening and an occupant being thrown out of the vehicle, resulting in death or serious injury.
●Ensure that all doors are properly closed and locked.
●Do not pull the inside door handle while driving.
Be especially careful of the front doors, as the doors may be opened even if the inside lock buttons are in
the locked position.
●Set the rear door child-protector
locks when children are seated in the rear seats.

The back door can be
locked/unlocked and
opened/closed by the follow-
ing procedures.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or
serious injury.
■Caution while driving
●Keep the back door closed while driving. If the back door is left open, it may hit near-by objects while driv-
ing or luggage may be unexpect- edly thrown out, causing an accident.
In addition, exhaust gases may enter the vehicle, causing death or a serious health hazard. Make sure
to close the back door before driv- ing.
●Before driving the vehicle, make sure that the back door is fully closed. If the back door is not fully
closed, it may open unexpectedly while driving, causing an accident.
●Never let anyone sit in the luggage compartment. In the event of sud-den braking or a collision, they are
susceptible to death or serious injury.
■When children are in the vehicle
●Do not allow children to play in the luggage compartment.
If a child is accidentally locked in the luggage compartment, they could have heat exhaustion or other
injuries.

3-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors
WARNING
●Do not allow a child to open or close the back door.
Doing so may cause the back door to move unexpectedly, or cause the child’s hands, head, or neck to be
caught by the closing back door.
■Operating the back door
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may cause parts of the body to be caught, resulting in
death or serious injury.
●Remove any heavy loads, such as
snow and ice, from the back door before opening it. Failure to do so may cause the back door to sud-
denly shut again after it is opened.
●When opening or closing the back
door, thoroughly check to make sure the surrounding area is safe.
●If anyone is in the vicinity, make sure they are safe and let them know that the back door is about to
open or close.
●Use caution when opening or clos-
ing the back door in windy weather as it may move abruptly in strong wind.
●The back door may suddenly shut if it is not opened fully. It is more diffi-
cult to open or close the back door on an incline than on a level sur-face, so beware of the back door
unexpectedly opening or closing by itself. Make sure that the back door is fully open and secure before
using the luggage compartment.
●When closing the back door, take extra care to prevent your fingers, etc., from being caught.
●When closing the back door, make sure to press it lightly on its outer
surface. If the back door handle is used to fully close the back door, it may result in hands or arms being
caught.
●Do not pull on the back door
damper stay ( P.140) to close the back door, and do not hang on the back door damper stay. Doing so
may cause hands to be caught or the back door damper stay to break, causing an accident.
●If a bicycle carrier or similar heavy object is attached to the back door,
it may suddenly shut again after being opened, causing someone’s hands, head or neck to be caught
and injured. When installing an accessory part to the back door, using a genuine Toyota part is rec-
ommended.
