Working from top to bottom, lib-
erally apply water to the vehicle
body, wheel wells and underside
of the vehicle to remove any dirt
and dust.
Wash the vehicle body using a
sponge or soft cloth, such as a
chamois.
For hard-to-remove marks, use
car wash soap and rinse thor-
oughly with water.
Wipe away any water.
Wax the vehicle when the water-
proof coating deteriorates.
If water does not bead on a clean sur-
face, apply wax when the vehicle body
is cool.
QBefore car washes
Check that the fuel filler door and
charging port lid on your vehicle are
closed properly.
QAutomatic car washes
OBefore washing the vehicle:
• Fold the mirrors
• Turn off the power back door (if
equipped)
Start washing from the front of the vehi-
cle. Make sure to extend the mirrors
before driving.
OBrushes used in automatic car
washes may scratch the vehicle sur-
face, parts (wheel, etc.) and harm
your vehicle’s paint.
ORear spoiler may not be washable in
some automatic car washes. There
may also be an increased risk of dam-
age to vehicle.
QHigh pressure car washes
As water may enter the cabin, do not
bring the nozzle tip near the gaps
around the doors or perimeter of the
windows, or spray these areas continu-
ously.
QNote for a smart entry & start sys-
tem
If the door handle becomes wet while
the electronic key is within the effective
range, the door may lock and unlock
repeatedly. In that case, follow the fol-
lowing correction procedures to wash
the vehicle:
OPlace the key in a position 2 m (6 ft.)
or more separate from the vehicle
while the vehicle is being washed.
(Take care to ensure that the key is
not stolen.)
OSet the electronic key to battery-sav-
ing mode to disable the smart entry &
start system. (P.222)
QWheels and wheel ornaments
ORemove any dirt immediately by using
a neutral detergent.
OWash detergent off with water imme-
diately after use.
OTo protect the paint from damage,
make sure to observe the following
precautions.
• Do not use acidic, alkaline or abrasive
detergent.
• Do not use hard brushes.
• Do not use detergent on the wheels
when they are hot, such as after driv-
ing or parking in hot weather.

The 12-volt battery is located in the
right-hand side of luggage compart-
ment.
QBefore recharging
When recharging, the 12-volt battery produces hydrogen gas which is flam-mable and explosive. Therefore,
observe the following precautions before recharging:
OIf recharging with the 12-volt battery installed on the vehicle, be sure to dis-connect the ground cable.
OMake sure the power switch on the charger is off when connecting and
disconnecting the charger cables to the 12-volt battery.
QAfter recharging/reconnecting the 12-volt battery
The hybrid system may not start. Follow the procedure below to initialize the sys-tem.
1 Shift the shift lever to P.
2 Open and close any of the doors.
3 Restart the hybrid system.
OUnlocking the doors using the smart entry & start system may not be possi-
ble immediately after reconnecting the 12-volt battery. If this happens, use the wireless remote control or the
mechanical key to lock/unlock the

QDo not use any fluid other than washer fluid
Do not use soapy water or engine antifreeze instead of washer fluid.Doing so may cause streaking on the
vehicle’s painted surfaces, as well as damaging the pump leading to prob-lems of the washer fluid not spraying.
QDiluting washer fluid
Dilute washer fluid with water as nec-
essary. Refer to the freezing temperatures listed on the label of the washer fluid
bottle.

QIf the key battery is depleted
The following symptoms may occur:
OThe smart entry & start system and
wireless remote control will not func- tion properly.
OThe operational range will be reduced.
Prepare the following before replac-
ing the battery:
 Flathead screwdriver
 Small flathead screwdriver
 Lithium battery CR2450
QUse a CR2450 lithium battery
OBatteries can be purchased at any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer, local electrical appliance
shops or camera stores.
OReplace only with the same or equiva-
lent type recommended by the manu- facturer.
ODispose of used batteries according to the local laws.
1 Release the lock and remove
the mechanical key.
2 Remove the key cover.
Use a screwdriver of an appropriate size. Forcedly prying may cause the cover damaged.
To prevent damage to the key, cover the tip of the flathead screwdriver with a rag.
3 Remove the depleted battery
using a small flathead screw-
driver.
When removing the cover, the elec- tronic key module may stick to the cover and the battery may not be visi-
ble. In this case, remove the electronic key module in order to remove the bat-tery.

Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
ODo not swallow the battery. Doing
so may cause chemical burns.
OA coin battery or button battery is
used in the electronic key. If a bat- tery is swallowed, it may cause severe chemical burns in as little as
2 hours and may result in death or serious injury.
OKeep away new and removed bat-teries from children.
OIf the cover cannot be firmly closed, stop using the electronic key and stow the key in the place where
children cannot reach, and then contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer as soon as possible.
OIf you accidentally swallow a battery or put a battery into a part of your body, get emergency medical atten-
tion immediately.
QTo prevent battery explosion or leakage of flammable liquid or gas
OReplace the battery with a new bat-tery of the same type. If a wrong type of battery is used, it may
explode.
ODo not expose batteries to
extremely low pressure due to high altitude or extremely high tempera-tures.
ODo not burn, break or cut a battery.

When trouble arises
One of the following may be the
cause of the problem:
 The AC charging cable may be
attached to the vehicle.

 The electronic key may not be
functioning properly. ( P.544)
 There may not be sufficient fuel
in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. ( P.298)
 There may be a malfunction in
the immobilizer system. ( P.76)
 There may be a malfunction in
the steering lock system.
 The hybrid system may be mal-
functioning due to an electrical
problem such as electronic key
battery depletion or a blown fuse.
However, depending on the type
of malfunction, an interim mea-
sure is available to start the

 There is a possibility that the

Do not fit tire chains to the compact spare tire.
Tire chains may damage the vehicle
body and adversely affect driving per- formance.
QWhen replacing the tires
When removing or fitting the wheels, tires or the tire pressure warning
valve and transmitter, contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer as the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter may be dam-aged if not handled correctly.

1 Remove the cover inside the
luggage compartment by insert-
ing a screwdriver.
When removing the cover, to prevent damage, cover the tip of the screw-driver with a rag.
2 Pull the lever.
Using the lever to open the fuel filler
door may not allow for an adequate reduction in fuel tank pressure before refueling. To prevent fuel from spilling
out, turn the cap slowly when removing it.
During refueling, fuel may spill out from
the filler opening due to air being dis- charged from inside the fuel tank.
If you lose your keys
New genuine keys can be
made by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer using the other
key and the key number
stamped on your key number
plate. Keep the plate in a safe
place such as your wallet, not
in the vehicle.
NOTICE
QWhen an electronic key is lost
If the electronic key remains lost, the
risk of vehicle theft increases signifi- cantly. Visit any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer immediately with all remaining electronic keys that were provided with your vehicle.
If the fuel filler door can-

QWhen the electronic key does not work properly
OMake sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in

OCheck if battery-saving mode is set. If it is set, cancel the function. ( P.222)
OThe electronic key function may have
stopped. ( P.222)
If the electronic key
does not operate prop-
erly
If communication between the
electronic key and vehicle is

because the battery is
depleted, the smart entry &
start system, push button start
