5-1. Before driving
Driving
WARNING
OThe brake system consists of 2 or more individual hydraulic systems;
if one of the systems fails, the other will still operate. In this case, the brake pedal should be depressed
more firmly than usual and the braking distance will increase. Have your brakes fixed immediately.
QIf the vehicle becomes stuck
Do not spin the wheels excessively
when any of the tires is up in the air, or the vehicle is stuck in sand, mud, etc. This may damage the driveline
components or propel the vehicle for- ward or backward, causing an acci-dent.
NOTICE
QWhen driving the vehicle
ODo not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time
during driving, as this may restrain the hybrid system output.
ODo not use the accelerator pedal or depress the accelerator and brake
pedals at the same time to hold the vehicle on a hill.
QAvoiding damage to vehicle parts
ODo not turn the steering wheel fully
in either direction and hold it there for an extended period of time.Doing so may damage the power
steering motor.
OWhen driving over bumps in the
road, drive as slowly as possible to avoid damaging the wheels, under-side of the vehicle, etc.
QIf you get a flat tire while driving
A flat or damaged tire may cause the
following situations.
OIt may be difficult to control your vehicle.
OThe vehicle will make abnormal sounds or vibrations.
OThe vehicle will lean abnormally.
Hold the steering wheel firmly and gradually depress the brake pedal to
slow down the vehicle.
Information on what to do in case of a flat tire ( P.522, 533)
QWhen encountering flooded roads
Do not drive on a road that has flooded after heavy rain, etc. Doing so may cause the following serious dam-
age to the vehicle:
OEngine stalling
OShort in electrical components
OEngine damage caused by water
immersion
In the event that you drive on a
flooded road and the vehicle is flooded, be sure to have any autho-rized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer check the following:
OBrake function
OChanges in quantity and quality of oil and fluid used for the engine,
hybrid transaxle (front and rear), etc.
OLubricant condition for the bearings and suspension joints (where possi-ble), and the function of all joints,
bearings, etc.
OComponents connected to the trac-
tion battery.
QWhen parking the vehicle
Always set the parking brake, and shift the shift lever to P. Failure to do so may cause the vehicle to move or
the vehicle may accelerate suddenly if the accelerator pedal is accidentally depressed.

WARNING
QBefore using LTA system
ODo not rely solely upon the LTA
system. The LTA system does not automatically drive the vehicle or reduce the amount of attention that
must be paid to the area in front of the vehicle. The driver must always assume full responsibility for driving
safely by paying careful attention to the surrounding conditions and operating the steering wheel to cor-
rect the path of the vehicle. Also, the driver must take adequate breaks when fatigued, such as from
driving for a long period of time.
OFailure to perform appropriate driv-
ing operations and pay careful attention may lead to an accident, resulting in death or serious injury.
OWhen not using the LTA system, use the LTA switch to turn the sys-
tem off.
QSituations unsuitable for LTA
system
In the following situations, use the LTA switch to turn the system off.
Failure to do so may lead to an acci- dent, resulting in death or serious injury.
OVehicle is driven on a road surface which is slippery due to rainy
weather, fallen snow, freezing, etc.
OVehicle is driven on a snow-cov-
ered road.
OWhite (yellow) lines are difficult to
see due to rain, snow, fog, dust, etc.
OVehicle is driven in a temporary lane or restricted lane due to con-struction work.
OVehicle is driven in a construction zone.
OA spare tire, tire chains, etc. are equipped.
OWhen the tires have been exces-sively worn, or when the tire infla-tion pressure is low.
OWhen your vehicle is towing a trailer or during emergency towing
QPreventing LTA system malfunc-tions and operations performed
by mistake
ODo not modify the headlights or place stickers, etc. on the surface of
the lights.
ODo not modify the suspension etc. If
the suspension etc. needs to be replaced, contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
ODo not install or place anything on
the hood or grille. Also, do not install a grille guard (bull bars, kan-garoo bar, etc.).
OIf your windshield needs repairs, contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
QConditions in which functions may not operate properly
In the following situations, the func-
tions may not operate properly and the vehicle may depart from its lane. Drive safely by always paying careful
attention to your surroundings and operate the steering wheel to correct the path of the vehicle without relying
solely on the functions.

OWhen the parking space faces a
street and vehicles are being driven
on the street.
OWhen the distance between your vehi-
cle and metal objects, such as a
guardrail, wall, sign, or parked vehicle,
which may reflect electrical waves
toward the rear of the vehicle, is short.
OWhen equipment that may obstruct a
sensor is installed, such as a towing
eyelet, bumper protector (an addi-
tional trim strip, etc.), bicycle carrier,
or snow plow.
OWhen a vehicle passes by the side of
your vehicle.
OWhen a detected vehicle turns while
approaching the vehicle.
OWhen there are spinning objects near
your vehicle such as the fan of an air
conditioning unit.
OWhen water is splashed or sprayed
toward the rear bumper, such as from
a sprinkler.
OMoving objects (flags, exhaust fumes,
large rain droplets or snowflakes, rain
water on the road surface, etc.).
OWhen the distance between your vehi-
cle and a guardrail, wall, etc., that
enters the detection area is short.
OGratings and gutters.
OWhen a sensor or the area around a
sensor is extremely hot or cold.
OIf the suspension has been modified
or tires of a size other than specified
are installed.
OIf the front of the vehicle is raised or
lowered due to the carried load.

Driving
QThe system can be operated when
OThe power switch is in ON.
OToyota parking assist-sensor function
is on.
OThe vehicle speed is less than about
10 km/h (6 mph).
OThe shift lever is in other than P.
QIf “Clean Parking Assist Sensor” is
displayed on the multi-information display
A sensor may be covered with ice,
snow, dirt, etc. Remove the ice, snow, dirt, etc., from the sensor to return the system to normal.
Also, due to ice forming on a sensor at low temperatures, a warning message may be displayed or the sensor may not
be able to detect an object. Once the ice melts, the system will return to normal.
If a warning message is displayed even
if the sensor is clean, there may be a sensor malfunction. Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
QIf “Parking Assist Unavailable” is displayed on the multi-information
display (vehicles with PKSB)
Water may be continuously flowing over the sensor surface, such as in a heavy
rain. When the system determines that it is normal, the system will return to nor-mal.
WARNING
ODo not attach a sticker or install an electronic component, such as a
backlit license plate (especially fluo- rescent type), fog lights, fender pole or wireless antenna near a radar
sensor.
ODo not subject the surrounding area
of the sensor to a strong impact. If subjected to an impact, have the vehicle inspected by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer. If the front or rear bumper needs to
be removed/installed or replaced, contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
ODo not modify, disassemble or paint
the sensors.
ODo not attach a license plate cover.
OKeep your tires properly inflated.
QWhen to disable the function
In the following situations, disable the function as it may operate even
though there is no possibility of a colli- sion.
OFailing to observe the warnings
above.
OA non-genuine Toyota suspension
(lowered suspension, etc.) is installed.
QNotes when washing the vehicle
Do not apply intensive bursts of water or steam to the sensor area.
Doing so may result in the sensor malfunctioning.
OWhen using a high pressure washer to wash the vehicle, do not spray the sensors directly, as doing
so may cause a sensor to malfunc- tion.
OWhen using steam to clean the vehicle, do not direct steam too close to the sensors as doing so
may cause a sensor to malfunction.

3805-5. Using the driving support systems
The Parking Support Brake can be
enabled/disabled on the screen
of the multi-information display. All
of the Parking Support Brake func-
tions (static objects and rear-cross-
ing vehicles) are enabled/disabled
simultaneously. ( P.184)
When the Parking Support Brake is dis-
abled, the PKSB OFF indicator
( P.169) illuminates on the multi-infor-
mation display.
To re-enable the system, select on
the multi-information display, select
and turn it on.
If the system is disabled, it will remain
off even if the power switch is turned to
ON after the power switch has been
turned off.
WARNING
OWhen loading the vehicle onto a boat, truck or other transport ves-
sel.
OIf the suspension has been modi-
fied or tires of a size other than specified are installed.
OIf the front of the vehicle is raised or lowered due to the carried load.
OWhen equipment that may obstruct a sensor is installed, such as a tow-ing eyelet, bumper protector (an
additional trim strip, etc.), bicycle carrier, or snow plow.
OWhen using automatic car washing devices.
OIf the vehicle cannot be driven in a stable manner, such as when the vehicle has been in an accident or
is malfunctioning.
OWhen the vehicle is driven in a
sporty manner or off-road.
OWhen the tires are not properly
inflated.
OWhen the tires are very worn.
OWhen tire chains, a compact spare tire or an emergency tire puncture
repair kit are used.

QIf “Parking Support Brake Unavailable” is displayed on the
multi-information display and the PKSB OFF indicator illuminates
If this message is displayed immedi-
ately after the power switch is changed to ON, operate the vehicle carefully, paying attention to your sur-
roundings. It may be necessary to drive the vehicle for a certain amount of time before the system returns to
normal. (If the system does not return to normal after driving for a while, clean the sensors and their surround-
ing area on the bumpers.)

WARNING
OWhen driving over bumps in the road
OWhen driving over roads with pot-holes or uneven surfaces
QTRC/VSC may not operate effec-tively when
Directional control and power may not be achievable while driving on slip-pery road surfaces, even if the
TRC/VSC system is operating. Drive the vehicle carefully in condi-tions where stability and power may
be lost.
QActive Cornering Assist does not
operate effectively when
ODo not overly rely on Active Corner- ing Assist. Active Cornering Assist
may not operate effectively when accelerating down slopes or driving on slippery road surfaces.
OWhen Active Cornering Assist fre-quently operates, Active Cornering
Assist may temporarily stop operat- ing to ensure proper operation of the brakes, TRC and VSC.
QHill-start assist control does not operate effectively when
ODo not overly rely on hill-start assist control. Hill-start assist control may not operate effectively on steep
inclines and roads covered with ice.
OUnlike the parking brake, hill-start
assist control is not intended to hold the vehicle stationary for an extended period of time. Do not
attempt to use hill-start assist con- trol to hold the vehicle on an incline, as doing so may lead to an acci-
dent.
QWhen the TRC/ABS/VSC/Trailer Sway Control is activated
The slip indicator light flashes. Always
drive carefully. Reckless driving may cause an accident. Exercise particular care when the indicator light flashes.
QWhen the TRC/VSC/Trailer Sway Control systems are turned off
Be especially careful and drive at a speed appropriate to the road condi-tions. As these are the systems to
help ensure vehicle stability and driv- ing force, do not turn the TRC/VSC/Trailer Sway Control sys-
tems off unless necessary.
Trailer Sway Control is part of the VSC system and will not operate if
VSC is turned off or experiences a malfunction.
QReplacing tires
Make sure that all tires are of the specified size, brand, tread pattern
and total load capacity. In addition, make sure that the tires are inflated to the recommended tire inflation pres-
sure level. The ABS, TRC, VSC and Trailer Sway Control systems will not func-
tion correctly if different tires are installed on the vehicle.Contact any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer for further information when replacing tires or
wheels.
QHandling of tires and the suspen-
sion
Using tires with any kind of problem or modifying the suspension will affect
the driving assist systems, and may cause a system to malfunction.

4447-1. Maintenance and care
WARNING
QPrecaution regarding the rear bumper with Blind Spot Monitor
(if equipped)
If the paint of the rear bumper is chipped or scratched, the system may
malfunction. If this occurs, consult any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.
NOTICE
QTo prevent paint deterioration and corrosion on the body and
components (aluminum wheels, etc.)
OWash the vehicle immediately in
the following cases:
• After driving near the sea coast
• After driving on salted roads
• If coal tar or tree sap is present on the paint surface
• If dead insects, insect droppings or
bird droppings are present on the paint surface
• After driving in an area contami- nated with soot, oily smoke, mine dust, iron powder or chemical sub-
stances
• If the vehicle becomes heavily soiled with dust or mud
• If liquids such as benzene and gas- oline are spilled on the paint sur-face
OIf the paint is chipped or scratched, have it repaired immediately.
OTo prevent the wheels from corrod-ing, remove any dirt and store in a
place with low humidity when stor- ing the wheels.
QCleaning the exterior lights
OWash carefully. Do not use organic substances or scrub with a hard
brush. This may damage the surfaces of the lights.
ODo not apply wax to the surfaces of the lights.
Wax may cause damage to the lenses.
QWhen using an automatic car wash
Set the wiper switch to off position.
If the wiper switch is in “AUTO”, the wipers may operate and the wiper blades may be damaged.
QWhen using a high pressure car wash
OWhen washing the vehicle, do not let water from the high-pressure washer directly hit the camera (if
equipped) or the area around the camera. Due to the shock from the high pressure water, it is possible
that the device may not operate normally.
ODo not bring the nozzle tip close to boots (rubber or resin manufac-tured cover), or connectors or the
following parts. The parts may be damaged if they come into contact with high-pres-
sure water.
• Traction related parts
• Steering parts
• Suspension parts
• Brake parts
OKeep the cleaning nozzle at least 30 cm (11.9 in.) away from the vehi-cle body. Otherwise resin section,
such as moldings and bumpers, may be deformed and damaged. Also, do not continuously hold the
nozzle in the same place.

QDoes your vehicle need repairs?
Be on the alert for changes in perfor-
mance and sounds, and visual tip-offs
that indicate service is needed. Some
important clues are:
OEngine missing, stumbling or pinging
OAppreciable loss of power
OStrange engine noises
OA fluid leak under the vehicle (How-
ever, water dripping from the air con-
ditioning system after use is normal.)
OChange in exhaust sound (This may
indicate a dangerous carbon monox-
ide leak. Drive with the windows open
and have the exhaust system checked
immediately.)
OFlat-looking tires, excessive tire
squeal when cornering, uneven tire
wear
OVehicle pulls to one side when driven
straight on a level road
OStrange noises related to suspension
movement
OLoss of brake effectiveness, spongy
feeling brake pedal, pedal almost
touches the floor, vehicle pulls to one
side when braking
OEngine coolant temperature continu-
ally higher than normal (P.551)
If you notice any of these clues, take
your vehicle to any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or
any reliable repairer as soon as possi-
ble.
Your vehicle may need adjustment or
repair.
