If your vehicle needs to be towed
In the following situations, it is not possible to be towed by another
vehicle using cables or chains, as the front wheels may be lock ed due
to the parking lock. Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or To y o t a
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer or commercial tow ing ser-
vice.
O There is a malfunction in the shift control system. (P. 326, 672)
O There is a malfunction in the immobilizer system. (P. 74)
O There is a malfunction in the smart entry & start system. (P. 693)
O The 12-volt battery is discharged. (P. 697)
The following may indicate a problem with your hybrid transmiss ion.
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized rep airer,
or any reliable repairer or commercial towing service before to wing.
O The hybrid system warning message is displayed and the vehicle
does not move.
O The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer or commercial towing service ,
using a wheel-lift type truck or flatbed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all stat e/
provincial and local laws.

WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
Q When towing the vehicle
Q While towing
O When towing using cables or chains, avoid sudden starts, etc. which place
excessive stress on the towing eyelets, cables or chains. The t owing eye-
lets, cables or chains may become damaged, broken debris may hi t peo-
ple, and cause serious damage.
O Do not turn the power switch off.
This may lead to an accident as the front wheels will be locked by the
parking lock.
Q Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
O The towing eyelets are only for the vehicle equipped with them. Do not use
the towing eyelets for another vehicle, and do not use the towi ng eyelets
for this vehicle on another vehicle.
O Make sure that towing eyelets are installed securely.
If not securely installed, towing eyelets may come loose during towing.
Be sure to transport the vehicle with the
front wheels raised or with all four wheels
raised off the ground. If the vehicle is
towed with the front wheels contacting
the ground, the drivetrain and related
parts may be damaged or electricity gen-
erated by the operation of the motor may
cause a fire to occur depending on the
nature of the damage or malfunction.

When trouble arises
QWarning messages
The warning messages explained below may differ from the actual messages
according to operation conditions and vehicle specifications.
Q System warning lights
The master warning light does not come on or flash in the follo wing cases.
Instead, a separate system warning light will come on along wit h a message
or image shown on the multi-information display.
O “Antilock Brake System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer”:
The ABS warning light comes on. ( P. 658)
O “Braking Power Low Visit Your Dealer”:
The brake system warning light (yellow) will come on. ( P. 657)
O Indicates that a door is not fully closed while the vehicle is stopped.:
The Open door warning light comes on. ( P. 6 6 0 )
Q If “Visit Your Dealer” is shown
The system or part shown on the multi-information display is ma lfunctioning.
Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Q If a message about an operation is shown
O If a message about an operation of the accelerator pedal or brake pedal is
shown
• A warning message about an operation of the brake pedal may be shown
while the driving assist systems such as PCS (Pre-Collision Sys tem) or
the dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range is opera ting. If a
warning message is shown, be sure to decelerate the vehicle or follow an
instruction shown on the multi-information display.
• A warning message is shown when Brake Override System operates .

• A warning message is shown when Drive-Start Control or Parking Sup-
port Brake function (if equipped) operates ( P. 310, 468). Follow the
instructions on the multi-information display.
O If a message about an operation of the power switch is shown
An instruction for operation of the power switch is shown when the incorrect
procedure for starting the hybrid system is performed or the po wer switch is
operated incorrectly. Follow the instructions shown on the mult i-information
display to operate the power switch again.
O If a message about a shift operation is shown
To prevent the shift position from being selected incorrectly o r the vehicle
from moving unexpectedly, the shift position may be changed aut omatically
( P. 331) or shift operation may be required. In this case, change the shift
position following the instructions on the multi-information di splay.

Q If “Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts See Owner’s
Manual” is shown
There is a possibility that the filter may be clogged, the air intake vent may be
blocked or there may be a gap in the duct.
O When the air intake vents or filters are dirty, clean them by the procedures
on P. 573.
O When the air intake vents or filters are not dirty and the warning message is
shown, have the vehicle inspected at any authorized Toyota reta iler or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Q If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Refrain From the Use of
Position” is shown
This message may be displayed when the shift position is in N.
As the hybrid battery (traction battery) can not be charged whe n the shift
position is in N, shift the shift position to P when the vehicl e is stopped.
Q If “Traction Battery Needs to be Protected Shift into to Restart” is
shown
This message is displayed when the hybrid battery (traction bat tery) charge
has become extremely low because the vehicle has been left with the N shift
position selected for a certain amount of time.
When operating the vehicle, shift to P and restart the hybrid s ystem.
Q If “Shifted into Shift Again to Start Vehicle” is shown
Message is displayed when the automatic P position selection fu nction oper-
ates. ( P. 332)
To start off the vehicle after the shift position is changed to P, operate the shift
lever again.
Q If “Shift to Before Exiting Vehicle” is shown
Message is displayed when the driver’s door is opened without t urning the
power switch to off with the shift position in any position oth er than P.
Shift the shift position to P.
Q If “Shift is in Release Accelerator Before Shifting” is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal has been depres sed and
the shift position is in N.
Release the accelerator pedal and shift the shift position to D or R.
Q If “Depress Brake When Vehicle is Stopped. Hybrid System may Over-
heat.” is shown
The message may be shown when the accelerator pedal is depresse d to hold
the vehicle while the vehicle is stopped on an uphill, etc.
The hybrid system may overheat. Release the accelerator pedal a nd depress
the brake pedal.
Q If “Shifted to Stop Vehicle to Shift to ” is shown
If the P position switch is pressed while driving, the shift po sition is changed
to N and the message is shown. ( P. 331)

Connect the hose to the valve.
Screw the end of the hose clock-
wise as far as possible.
Make sure that the compressor
switch is off.
Connect the power plug to the power outlet socket. ( P. 556)
Attach the sticker provided with
the tire puncture repair kit to a
position easily seen from the
driver’s seat.

When trouble arises
If the electronic key does not operate
properly
Use the mechanical key ( P. 269) in order to perform the following
operations:
Locks all the doors
Closes the windows (turn and
hold)*
Unlocks all the doors
Opens the windows (turn and
hold)*
*: This setting must be customized at
any authorized Toyota retailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer. ( P. 724)
If communication between the electronic key and vehicle is inter-
rupted ( P. 286) or the electronic key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart entry & start system and wireles s
remote control cannot be used. In such cases, the doors can be
opened and the hybrid system can be started by following the pr o-
cedure below.

QLocking the charging port lid
Close the charging port lid. ( P. 112)
Lock the doors using the mechanical key. ( P. 693)
The charging port lid can be locked if the steps and are performed
in reverse.
QUnlocking the charging port lid
Unlock the doors using the mechanical key. ( P. 693)
Open the charging port lid. ( P. 112)
Unlock the doors using the mechanical key. ( P. 693)
Push the charging connector lock switch. ( P. 159)

QStopping the hybrid system
Set the parking brake, shift the shift position to P and press the power switch
as you normally do when stopping the hybrid system.
Q Replacing the key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary measure, it is recommende d that the
electronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery is depleted.

Q Alarm (if equipped)
Using the mechanical key to lock the doors will not set the ala rm system.
If a door is unlocked using the mechanical key when the alarm s ystem is set,
the alarm may be triggered. ( P. 7 6 )
Q Changing power switch modes
Release the brake pedal and press the power switch in step abo ve. The
hybrid system does not start and modes will be changed each tim e the switch
is pressed. ( P. 325)
Q When the electronic key does not work properly
O Make sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in
the customization setting. If it is off, turn the function on.

O Check if battery-saving mode is set. If it is set, cancel the function.

WARNING
QWhen using the mechanical key and operating the power windows
Operate the power window after checking to make sure that there is no pos-
sibility of any passenger having any of their body parts caught in the win-
dow.
Also, do not allow children to operate the mechanical key. It i s possible for
children and other passengers to get caught in the power window .
