Fuel cell system
in order to warn people nearby
of the vehicle’s approach. The
sound will stop when the vehicle
speed exceeds approximately
23 mph (37 km/h).
■How to hear the warning
In the following ca ses, the acoustic
vehicle alerting system may be diffi-
cult for surrounding people to hear.
●In very noisy areas
●In the wind or the rain
Also, as the acoustic vehicle alerting
system is installed on the front of the
vehicle, it may be m ore difficult to
hear from the rear of the vehicle
compared to the front.
*: This function can only be used in
the mainland U.S.A. It cannot be
used in other states and territo-
ries, including Alaska and Hawaii.
This system operates based on
the driving situation to enhance
fuel economy. For details about
Predictive efficient drive, refer to
“NAVIGATION AND MULTIME-
DIA SYSTEM OWNER’S MAN-
UAL”.
■Predictive deceleration sup-
port
When the vehicle approaches
to predictive deceleration sup-
port points registered in the
navigation system, the refer-
ence operation range of the ECO Accelerator Guid-
ance (
P.102) on the multi-
information display will be
turned off to encourage the
driver to reduce excessive
acceleration.
The regenerative braking
force will be increased
according to the driving condi-
tions to more efficiently
charge the traction battery
after the accelerator pedal is
released.
■Predictive SOC* control
The following types of controls
are performed based on data
such as road information during
route guidance by the naviga-
tion system to help ensure that
the vehicle effici ently uses elec-
tricity.
When there is a long downhill
slope along the route, the sys-
tem reduces the traction bat-
tery level before reaching the
slope to help ensure charging
capacity for regenerative
braking while traveling down-
hill.

■Basic concepts of hydrogen
safety
●Prevent leakage
The pipe joints o f the hydrogen
pipelines are designed to prevent
leaks.
The joints are checked for gas leak-
age at every official vehicle inspec-
tion.
●Detect to stop leakage
• The vehicle is equipped with
hydrogen detectors. If the hydro-
gen detectors detect a leak, the
hydrogen tank valves automati-
cally close to prevent more hydro-
gen from escaping.
• The vehicle is equipped with a col- lision sensor. If the collision sen-
sor detects a collision, the
hydrogen tank valves automati-
cally close to prevent hydrogen
gas from leaking from any dam- aged components.
●Disperse the leaked hydrogen gas
The hydrogen tanks and pipelines
are located outside of the passenger
compartment, so any leaked gas will
disperse into the atmosphere by
design.
●Eliminate sources of fire
No source of fire is located near the
hydrogen pipelines by design.

WARNING
■When starting the vehicle
Always keep your foot on the
brake pedal while stopped with
the “READY” indicator is illumi-
nated. This prevents the vehicle
from creeping.
■When driving the vehicle
●Do not drive if y ou are unfamil-
iar with the location of the brake
and accelerator pedals to avoid
depressing the wrong pedal.
• Accidentally depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the
brake pedal will result in sudden
acceleration that may lead to an
accident.
• When backing up, you may twist your body around, leading to dif-
ficulty in operating the pedals.
Make sure to operate the pedals
properly.
• Make sure to keep a correct driving posture even when mov-
ing the vehicle only slightly. This
allows you to depress the brake
and accelerator pedals properly.
• Depress the brake pedal using your right foot. Depressing the
brake pedal using your left foot
may delay respon se in an emer-
gency, resulting in an accident.
●The driver should pay extra
attention to pedes trians as this
vehicle is powered only by an
electric motor (traction motor).
As there is no engine noise, the
pedestrians may misjudge the
vehicle’s movement. Even with
the acoustic vehicle alerting
system activate, d rive with care
as pedestrians in the vicinity
may still not notice the vehicle if
the surrounding area is noisy.
●During normal driving, do not
turn off the fuel cell system.
Turning the fuel cell system off
while driving will not cause loss
of steering or braking control,
however, power assist to the
steering will be lost. This will
make it more difficult to steer
smoothly, so you should pull
over and stop the vehicle as
soon as it is safe to do so.
In the event of a n emergency,
such as if it becomes impossible
to stop the vehicle in the normal

●Using the brakes continuously
may cause the brakes to over-
heat and lose effectiveness
when driving down a steep hill.
●Do not adjust the positions of
the steering wheel, the seat, or
the inside or outside rear view
mirrors while driving.
Doing so may result in a loss of
vehicle control.
●Always check that all passen-
gers’ arms, heads or other parts
of their body are not outside the
vehicle.
●Do not drive in excess of the
speed limit. Even if the legal
speed limit permits it, do not
drive over 85 mph (140 km/h)
unless your vehicle has high-
speed capability tires. Driving
over 85 mph (140 km/h) may
result in tire fa ilure, loss of con-
trol and possible injury. Be sure
to consult a tire dealer to deter-
mine whether the tires on your
vehicle are high-speed capabil-
ity tires or not before driving at
such speeds.
■When driving on slippery
road surfaces
●Sudden braking, acceleration
and steering may cause tire
slippage and reduce your ability
to control the vehicle.

When the following unusual
operation is performed with the
accelerator pedal depressed,
the fuel cell system output may
be restrained.
• When the shift position is shifted to R
*.
• When the shift position is shifted from P or R to forward
drive shift position such as D
*.
When the system op erates, a mes-
sage appears on the multi-informa-
tion display. Read the message and
follow the instruction.
*: Depending on the situation, the shift position may not be
changed.
■Drive-Start Control (DSC)
●When the TRAC is turned off
( P.316), sudden start restraint
control also does not operate. If
your vehicle have trouble escap-
ing from the mud or fresh snow
due to sudden start restraint con-
trol operation, deactivate TRAC
( P.316) so that the vehicle may
become able to e scape from the
mud or fresh snow.
Cargo capacity depends on the
total weight of the occupants.
(Cargo capacity) = (Total load
capacity) — (Total weight of
occupants)
Steps for Determining Correct
Load Limit —
(1) Locate the statement “The
combined weight of occupants
and cargo should never exceed
XXX kg or XXX lbs.” on your
vehicle’s placard.
(2) Determine the combined
weight of the driver and passen-
gers that will be riding in your
vehicle.
(3) Subtract the combined
weight of the driver and passen-
gers from XXX kg or XXX lbs.
(4) The resulting figure equals
the available amount of cargo
and luggage load capacity.
For example, if the “XXX”
amount equals 1400 lbs. and
there will be five 150 lb passen-
gers in your vehicle, the amount
of available cargo and luggage
load capacity is 650 lbs. (1400 −
NOTICE
If the shift control system is dam-
aged by flooding, it may not be
possible to shift t he shift position
to P, or from P to other positions.
In this case, contact your Toyota
dealer.

●When the 12-volt battery terminals
are disconnected
and remain as
such in frozen areas
Operate the water release function
with the following p rocedure before-
hand to prevent water from freezing
in the system.
1 Turn the power switch to ON and
press the H
2O switch.
Check that the “A ctive Purge Mode
ON” message is displayed in the
multi-information display.
2 While depressing the brake,
press the power switch to start
the fuel cell system.
Check that the “READY” indicator
turns on.
3 Press the power switch to stop
the fuel cell system.
The water release is automatically
performed. (Longer than normal
water purge)
■Purging while parked
The water release function does not
completely prevent purging while
parked. The purge capacity while
parked changes depending on out-
side temperature and operating con-
ditions.
If the “READY” indicator continues
to remain on after water release has
been performed, w ater may be gen-
erated and purged when parked.

WARNING
●Turn the power switch off before
fueling.
●Ensure the hydrogen gas noz-
zle is locked onto the vehicle
receptacle before filling. This
can be done by pulling on the
hydrogen gas nozzle to check
that it cannot be pulled off. Fail-
ure to do so may result in injury
or damage to the hydrogen gas
nozzle or vehicle.
●Do not smoke while fueling.
●Because the fuel is cold, the
hydrogen gas nozzle and vehi-
cle receptacle surface will
become cold, and frost may
develop. After fueling is com-
pleted, remove the hydrogen
gas nozzle by the plastic handle
only. Do not touch any other
parts of the hydrogen gas noz-
zle or vehicle receptacle with
bare hands immediately after
fueling, as frostbite may occur.
●Be sure to use hydrogen gas
nozzles at 350 bar/700 bar for
passenger vehicles.
Do not use hydrogen gas noz-
zles designed for commercial
vehicles. Check the instructions
at hydrogen station or ask the
station operator for assistance.
●Only fuel the vehicle at hydro-
gen stations designed for pas-
senger vehicles. Do not fuel the
vehicle at hydrogen stations
designed for forklifts, buses, or
trucks. Ask the station operator
for assistance.
NOTICE
■When filling
●Fuel only with compressed
hydrogen gas at stations com-
pliant with the Society of Auto-
motive Engineers (SAE) J2601
fueling protocol or laws that may
supersede such SAE protocols.
If improper fuels are used, the
fuel cell stack will be damaged.
●Do not swing or drop the hydro-
gen gas nozzle, or subject it to a
large amount of force. Doing so
may cause damage.
●If the hydrogen gas nozzle can-
not be removed after fueling, it
may be frozen to the vehicle
receptacle. Wait for the hydro-
gen gas nozzle to thaw before
attempting to r emove. Do not
pull or rotate the hydrogen gas
nozzle forcibly. Failure to follow
these precautions may cause
damage.
●Be sure to replace the cap after
filling. If foreign ma terial gets in
the vehicle receptacle, it may
cause damage.
●Do not put anything sharp, such
as a screwdriver, blade, or any
foreign object into the opening
of the vehicle receptacle. If the
vehicle receptacle is damaged,
hydrogen gas may leak during
fueling.
●If you notice anything unusual
about the vehicle receptacle,
please notify your Toyota
dealer.
●If you notice anything unusual
with the hydrogen dispenser or
hydrogen gas nozzle, please
notify the hydrogen station
operator. Contact information is
usually displayed on the dis-
penser.

1 Press the opener switch.
If the “READY” indicator is on or the
power switch is in ON, the fuel door
will not be unlocked.
2Remove the cap and attach it
to the holder.
■If “Stop in a Safe Place Turn
Power OFF Open Hydrogen
Filler Door” is displayed on the
multi-information display
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and
press the fuel door opener switch
once more with the following proce-
dure:
1 Shift the shift position to P.
2 Turn the power switch off.
3 Press the fuel door opener
switch.
■Sounds during filling
When fueling with compressed
hydrogen gas, noises from gas flow-
ing through the hydrogen gas noz-
zle and hydrogen tank valves can
sometimes be heard. ( P. 7 5 )
1Replace the cap.
2 Close the fuel door.
NOTICE
●Do not put anti-freeze in the fuel
inlet opening. If foreign materi-
als enter the fuel inlet opening,
it may lead to damage.
●Do not use a hydrogen gas fuel-
ing nozzle that has water drop-
lets attached to it, when fueling.
The attached water droplets will
freeze and the hydrogen gas
fueling nozzle may no be able to
be removed.
