In the event that the vehicle is subject to a strong impact, all the doors are
unlocked. Depending on the force of the impact or the type of accident, how-
ever, the system may not operate.

Vehicles without smart entry & start system
The wireless remote control function may not operate normally in the follow-
ing situations:
O Near a TV tower, radio station, electric power plant, airport or other facility
that generates strong radio waves
O When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone or other wireless communi-
cation device
O When multiple wireless keys are in the vicinity
O When the wireless key is in contact with, or is covered by a metallic object
O When a wireless key (that emits radio waves) is being used nearby
O When the wireless key has been left near an electrical appliance such as a
personal computer

QTo prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.
Failing to do so may result in a door opening and an occupant falling out,
resulting in death or serious injury.
O Ensure that all doors are properly closed and locked.
O Do not pull the inside handle of the doors while driving.
Be especially careful for the driver’s door, as the door may be opened
even if the inside lock button is in locked position.
O Set the rear door child-protector locks when children are seated in the rear
seats.

Q Conditions affecting operation
The smart entry & start system uses weak radio waves. In the following situa-
tions, the communication between the electronic key and the vehicle may be
affected, preventing the smart entry & start system, wireless remote control
and engine immobilizer system from operating properly.
(Ways of coping: P. 600)
O When the electronic key battery is depleted
O Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large dis-
play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical
noise
O When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other
wireless communication device
O When the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by the following
metallic objects
• Cards to which aluminum foil is attached
• Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside
• Metallic wallets or bags
• Coins
• Hand warmers made of metal
• Media such as CDs and DVDs
O When multiple electronic keys are in the vicinity
O When other wireless keys (that emit radio waves) are being used nearby
O When carrying the electronic key together with the following devices that
emit radio waves
• Another vehicle’s electronic key or a wireless key that emits radio waves
• Personal computers or pers onal digital assistants (PDAs)
• Digital audio players
• Portable game systems
O If window tint with a metallic content or metallic objects are attached to the
rear window
O When the electronic key is placed near a battery charger or electronic devices

Q Note for the entry function
O Even if the electronic key is within the effective range (detection areas)
when locking or unlocking the doors, the system may not operate properly if
the electronic key is too close to the window or outside door handle, near
the ground, or in a high place.
O Do not leave the electronic key on top of the instrument panel or near the
door pockets when exiting the vehicle. Depending on the radio wave recep-
tion conditions, it may be detected by the antenna outside the cabin and the
doors will become lockable from the outside, possibly trapping the electronic
key inside the vehicle.
O As long as the electronic key is within the effective range, the doors may be
locked or unlocked by anyone. However, only the doors detecting the elec-
tronic key can be used to unlock the vehicle.
O Even if the electronic key is not inside the vehicle, it may be possible to start
the engine if the electronic key is near the window.
O If the wireless remote control is used to lock the doors when the electronic
key is near the vehicle, there is a possibility that the door may not be
unlocked by the entry function. (Use the wireless remote control to unlock
the doors.)
O Pulling the outside door handle while pressing the lock/unlock button on the
outside door handle may prevent the doors from being unlocked. In this
case, return the door handle to the original position, press the lock/unlock
button again, and check that the doors unlock before pulling the door handle
again.
O Unlocking the vehicle may take more time if another electronic key is within
the effective range.
Q When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods
O To prevent theft of the vehicle, do not leave the electronic key within 2 m
(6 ft.) of the vehicle.
O The smart entry & start system can be deactivated in advance. Ask any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer for details.
Q To operate the system properly
Make sure to carry the electronic key when operating the system. Do not get
the electronic key too close to the vehicle when operating the system from the
outside of the vehicle.
Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the key
may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly. (The
alarm may go off accidentally, or the door lock prevention function may not
operate.)

Q Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recom-
mended:
O For the first 300 km (200 miles):
Avoid sudden stops.
O For the first 800 km (500 miles) (with towing hitch):
Do not tow a trailer. ( P. 207)
O For the first 1000 km (600 miles):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in the low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
• Do not drive slowly with the manual transmission in a high gear.
Q Idling time before engine stop (diesel engine only)
To prevent damage to the turbocharger, allow the engine to idle immediately
after high-load driving.
Q Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability

Q After driving on muddy roads in poor condition (for EURO VI models*
with 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV engines)
Check the cooling fins of the urea injector and clear away any foreign objects
or substances such as leaves or mud. If any of the above parts is extremely
dirty or you are not sure of their condition, have your vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
*: EURO VI is an emission standard. If it is not clear that your vehicle meets

QWhen encountering flooded roads or waterlogged roads
Do not drive on a road that has flooded after heavy rain etc. Doing so may
cause the following serious damage to the vehicle:
O Engine stalling
O Short in electrical components
O Engine damage caused by water immersion
O Rubber or mechanical part damage or poor lubrication due to grease
being washed away, or grease becoming contaminated with mud or dirt
In the event that you drive on a flooded road and the vehicle is flooded, or
on a sandy road, be sure to have any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer check the following:
O Brake function
O Changes in quantity and quality of oil and fluid used for the engine, trans-
mission, transfer (4WD models), clutch, differential, etc.
O Lubricant condition for the propeller shaft, clutch fork, bearings and sus-
pension joints (where possible), and the function of all joints, bearings, etc.
Q Off-road driving (vehicles with type A wheel ornaments [P. 588])
When driving on muddy roads, rocky terrain or sand, or crossing rivers,
remove the wheel ornaments. Driving with the wheel ornaments installed
may cause the wheel ornaments to be damaged or even fall off.
After off-road driving with the wheel ornaments removed, remove dirt or for-
eign objects from the wheel before reinstalling the wheel ornaments.

QImportant points regarding stability
Vehicle movement resulting from uneven road surfaces and strong
crosswinds will affect handling. The vehicle may also be rocked by
passing buses or large trucks. Frequently check behind when mov-
ing alongside such vehicles. As soon as such vehicle movement
occurs, immediately start to decelerate smoothly by slowly applying
the brakes. Always steer the vehicle straight ahead while braking.
QPassing other vehicles
Consider the total combined length of your vehicle and trailer and
ensure that the vehicle-to-vehicle distance is sufficient before exe-
cuting lane changes.
QTransmission information
Vehicles with manual transmission: To maintain engine braking effi-
ciency when using engine braking, do not use 5th gear and 6th
gear.
Vehicles with automatic transmission: To maintain engine braking
efficiency when using engine braking, do not use the transmission
in D. Transmission shift range position must be in 4 or lower, in S
mode.
QIf the engine overheats
Towing a loaded trailer up a long, steep incline in temperatures
exceeding 30 C (85F) may result in the engine overheating. If the
engine coolant temperature gauge indicates that the engine is over-
heating, turn the air conditioning off immediately, leave the road and
stop the vehicle in a safe place. ( P. 610)
QWhen parking the vehicle
Always place wheel chocks under the wheels of both the vehicle
and trailer. Firmly set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to P
for automatic transmissions, and 1 or R for manual transmissions.

QNote for the electronic key
Carry the electronic key on your person, for example in your pocket.
The smart entry & start system does not operate properly if the electronic key
is on the floor or the instrument panel, or in the door pockets, cup holders or
auxiliary boxes.
Q Auto power off function
Vehicles with automatic transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour with the
shift lever in P, the engine switch will automatically turn off. However, this
function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle
with the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long peri-
ods of time when the engine is not running.
Vehicles with manual transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour, the engine
switch will automatically turn off. However, this function cannot entirely pre-
vent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the engine switch in
ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long periods of time when the
engine is not running.
Q Operation of the engine switch
If the switch is not pressed shortly and firmly, the engine switch mode may
not change or the engine may not start.
