ing on the severity and type of a
crash.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed
to record such data as:
• How various systems in your
vehicle were operating;
• How far (if at all) the driver was
depressing the accelerator
and/or brake pedal; and,
• How fast the vehicle was
traveling.
These data can help provide a bet-
ter understanding of the circum-
stances in which crashes and
injuries occur.
NOTE: EDR data are recorded by
your vehicle only if a non-trivial
crash situation occurs; no data are
recorded by the EDR under normal
driving conditions and no personal
data (e.g., name, gender, age, and
crash location) are recorded. How-
ever, other parties, such as law
enforcement, could combine the
EDR data with the type of person-
ally identifying data routinely
acquired during a crash investiga-
tion.
To read data recorded by an EDR,
special equipment is required, and
access to the vehicle or the EDR is
needed. In addition to the vehicle
manufacturer, other parties, such
as law enforcement, that have the
special equipment, can read the
information if they have access to
the vehicle or the EDR.
Disclosure of the EDR data
Toyota will not disclose the data
recorded in an EDR to a third party
except when:
• An agreement from the vehicle’s
owner (or the lessee for a leased
vehicle) is obtained
• In response to an official request by
the police, a court of law or a govern-
ment agency
• For use by Toyota in a lawsuit
However, if necessary, Toyota may:
• Use the data for research on vehicle
safety performance
• Disclose the data to a third party for
research purposes without disclos-
ing information about the specific
vehicle or vehicle owner
The SRS airbag and seat belt
pretensioner devices in your Toyota
contain explosive c hemicals. If the
vehicle is scrapped with the airbags
and seat belt pretensioners left as
they are, this may cause an acci-
dent such as fire. Be sure to have
the systems of the SRS airbag and
seat belt pretensioner removed and
disposed of by a qualified service
shop or by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer
before you scrap your vehicle.

Make sure that all occupants are
wearing their seat belts before driv-
ing the vehicle. ( P. 2 9 )
Use a child restraint system appro-
priate for the child until the child
becomes large enough to properly
wear the vehicle’s seat belt.
( P. 5 6 )
Make sure that you can see back-
ward clearly by adjusting the inside
and outside rear view mirrors prop-
erly. ( P.123, 124)
WA R N I N G
●Do not adjust the position of the
driver’s seat while driving.
Doing so could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
●Do not place a cushion between the driver or passenger and the
seatback.
A cushion may prevent correct pos-
ture from being achieved, and reduce the effectiveness of the seat
belt and head restraint.
●Do not place anything under the
front seats.
Objects placed under the front seats may become jammed in the
seat tracks and stop the seat from
locking in place. This may lead to an accident and the adjustment
mechanism may also be damaged.
●Always observe the legal speed
limit when driving on public roads.
●When driving over long distances,
take regular breaks before you start
to feel tired. Also, if you feel tired or sleepy while
driving, do not force yourself to con-
tinue driving and take a break immediately.

■Emergency locking retractor (ELR)
The retractor will lock the belt during a sudden stop or on impact. It may also
lock if you lean forward too quickly.
When the seat belt locks, pull the belt strongly and then release the belt, then
a slow and easy pulling will allow the
belt to extend.
When fastening a front seat belt,
ensure that it is passed through the
seat belt guide. Passing the seat
belt through the guide enables the
seat belt to be easily extended.
When you get into or out of the rear
seats, release the seat belt from the
seat belt guide.
The pretensioners help the seat
belts to quickly restrain the occu-
pants by retracting the seat belts
when the vehicle is subjected to
certain types of se vere frontal colli-
sion.
The front seat belt pretensioners also
activate when the vehicle is subjected
to certain types of severe side collision.
The pretensioners do not activate in the
event of a minor frontal impact, a minor
side impact, a rear impact or a vehicle
rollover.
■Replacing the belt after the
pretensioner has been activated
If the vehicle is involved in multiple colli- sions, the pretensioner will activate for
the first collision, but will not activate for
the second or subsequent collisions.

■When using the seat belt guide
●Always make sure that the belt is
not twisted, and runs freely through
the guide.
●Regardless of whether the guide is
used or not, always secure the seat belt guide button.
●Do not hang from or pull the guide forcefully.

●The SRS airbags deploy with con-
siderable speed and force. Occu-
pants who are out of the proper position when the SRS airbags
deploy could suffer very serious
injuries. Because the SRS airbags need enough space for deploy-
ment, the driver should always sit
upright and well back in the seat as
far from the steering wheel as prac- tical while still maintaining full vehi-
cle control and the front passenger
should move the seat as far back as possible and sit upright and well
back in the seat.
●Do not sit or lean unnecessarily
close to either door. The SRS side
airbags are stored in both front seat seatbacks next to the door, and
they provide protection by deploy-
ing rapidly (faster than the blink of an eye) in the event of a side
impact collision. However, the force
of SRS side airbag deployment may cause injuries if the head or
other parts of the body are too close
to the SRS side airbag.
●Do not sit or lean unnecessarily close to the door, windows or pillars
on either side. Also, do not put your
head, arms or hands out of the win- dow. The curtain shield airbags on
both sides of the cabin are stored in
the roof side (between the front pil- lar and a point over the rear seat),
and they provide protection by
deploying rapidly (faster than the blink of an eye) in the event of a
side impact or an offset frontal colli-
sion.
●Do not sit or lean unnecessarily
close to the SRS airbag. Because the SRS airbag deploys with con-
siderable speed faster than the
blink of an eye and force to pro- tect in high speed collisions, the
force of an airbag can injure an
occupant whose body is too close to SRS airbag.
It is also important to wear your
seatbelt to help avoid injuries that can result when the SRS airbag
contacts an occupant not in the
proper position such as one thrown forward during preaccident braking.
Even when properly positioned,
there remains a possibility that an occupant may suffer minor injury
such as abrasions and bruises to
the face or arms because of the SRS airbag deployment force.
●Do not rest your arm on either door or its internal trim. You could be
injured in the event of SRS side
airbag deployment.

381-1. For safe use
WA R N I N G
●Do not attach accessories to the
door trim or near either SRS side
airbags and do not place objects near the SRS side airbags. In the
event of SRS side airbag deploy-
ment, they could be propelled dan- gerously toward the vehicle’s
occupants and cause injuries.
●Do not attach a hands-free micro- phone or any other accessory to a
front pillar, a center pillar, a rear pil-
lar, the windshield, a side window, or any other cabin surface that
would be near a deploying SRS
curtain shield airbag. A hands-free microphone or other accessory in
such a location could be propelled
through the cabin with great force by the curtain shield airbag, or it
could prevent correct deployment of
the curtain shield airbag. In either case, the result could be serious
injuries.
●Never hang or place coat hangers
or other hard or pointed objects
near the side windows. If such items are present when the SRS
curtain shield airbags deploy, they
could be thrown through the pas- senger compartment and cause
serious injuries. They could also
prevent proper operation of the SRS curtain shield airbags.
●Do not put any kind of cover or clothes or other objects over either
front seatback and do not attach
labels or stickers to the front seat surface on or near the SRS side
airbag. They could prevent proper
deployment of the SRS side airbag, reducing protection available to the
front seat’s occupant.
●Do not install a seat cover unless it
is a genuine Toyota seat cover
exclusively designed for use with the SRS airbag. Even when using a
genuine Toyota seat cover, the SRS
side airbag system may not func- tion normally if the seat cover is not
installed correctly.

■General Precautions regarding
SRS Airbag System and Children
●Put children in the REAR seat prop- erly restrained at all times in a child
restraint device or in a seatbelt,
whichever is appropriate for the child’s age, height and weight. The
SRS airbag deploys with considera-
ble speed and force and can injure
or even kill children, especially if they are not restrained or improp-
erly restrained. Because children
are lighter and weaker than adults, their risk of being injured from
deployment is greater.
Secure ALL types of child restraint devices (including forward facing
child seats) in the REAR seats at all
times. According to accident statistics,
children are safer when properly
restrained in the rear seating posi- tions than in the front seating posi-
tions.
For instructions and precautions concerning the child restraint sys-
tem, refer to P.56.
●NEVER INSTALL A CHILD SEAT IN THE FRONT SEAT. DOING SO
RISKS SERIOUS INJURY OR
DEATH TO THE CHILD BY PLAC- ING THE CHILD’S HEAD TOO
CLOSE TO THE SRS AIRBAG.
●Never allow a child to stand up or
kneel on the front passenger’s seat.
The SRS airbag deploys with con- siderable force and can injure or
even kill the child.
●Never hold a child on your lap or in
your arms. The SRS airbag deploys
with considerable force and can injure or even kill the child.
●Never allow a child to do the follow-ing.
• Kneel on any passenger’s seat fac-
ing the side window
• Wrap his/her arms around the front
seat seatback

401-1. For safe use
WA R N I N G
• Put his/her head, arms or other
parts of the body out of the window
In the event of an accident, the force
of SRS side airbag and/or SRS cur-
tain shield airbag deployment could injure the child seriously because
his/her head, arms or other parts of
the body are too close to the SRS side airbag and/or SRS curtain shield
airbag.
●Since your vehicle is also equipped
with a front passenger’s SRS fron-
tal airbag, children aged 12 and under or 1.5 m (4 feet 11 inches) tall
or less should be placed in the rear
seat and should be properly restrained at all times.
■SRS Airbag System Servicing
The SRS airbag has no userservicea-
ble parts. Do not use electrical test
equipment on any circuit related to the SRS airbag system. For required
servicing of the SRS airbag, we rec-
ommend that you consult your near- est Toyota dealer. Tampering with or
disconnecting the system’s wiring
could result in accidental inflation of the SRS airbag or could make the
system inoperative, which may result
in serious injury.
■Precautions against Vehicle Modification
To avoid accidental activation of the
system or rendering the system inop- erative, which may result in serious
injury, no modifications should be
made to any components or wiring of the SRS airbag system.
This includes the following modifica-
tions.
●Installation of custom steering
wheels
●Attachment of additional trim mate-
rials to the dashboard
●Installation of custom seats
●Replacement of seat fabric or
leather
●Installation of additional fabric or
leather on the front seat
●Attachment of a hands-free micro-
phone or any other accessory to a
front pillar, a center pillar, a rear pil- lar, the windshield, a side window,
an assist grip, or any other cabin
surface that would be near a deploying SRS curtain shield
airbag.
●Installation of additional electri-
cal/electronic equipment such as a
mobile two-way radio on or near the SRS airbag system components
and/or wiring is not advisable. This
could interfere with proper opera- tion of the SRS airbag system.
●Modifications on or inside the front door panels for the purpose of a
speaker replacement or sound
insulation.
• The impact sensors, which detect
the pressure of an impact, are
located in the doors.
●Do not perform any of the following
modifications. Such modifications can interfere with proper operation
of the SRS airbag system.

a collision occurs.
After deployment, SRS AIR-
BAG start to deflate immediately
so that the driver’s vision is not

If the front sub sensors located on
both the right and left sides at the
front of the vehicle and the impact
sensors in the airbag control mod-
ule detect a certain predetermined
amount of force during a frontal col-
lision, the control module sends
signals to the frontal airbag mod-
ules instructing them to inflate the
SRS frontal airbags. Then both
airbag modules produce gas, which
instantly inflates driver’s and pas-
senger’s SRS frontal airbags. The
SRS knee airbag is also inflated in
combination with the SRS frontal
airbags.
After deployment, the SRS airbags
immediately start to deflate so that
the driver’s vision is not obstructed
and the driver’s ability to maintain
control of the vehicle is not inter-
fered with. The time required from
detecting impact to the deflation of
the SRS airbag after deployment is
shorter than the blink of an eye.
If the vehicle is equipped with the
occupant detection system for the
front passenger’s seat, the SRS
system detects whether the front
passenger’s seat is occupied by a
passenger or not. If the seat is not
occupied, the system does not
inflate the front passenger’s SRS
airbag.
The SRS frontal airbag (and also
the knee airbag) is designed to
deploy in the event of an accident
involving a moderate to severe
frontal collision. It is not designed to
deploy in most lesser frontal
impacts because the necessary
protection can be achieved by the
seatbelt alone. Also, it is not
designed to deploy in most side or
rear impacts or in most roll-over
accidents because deployment of
the SRS frontal airbag would not
help the occupant in those situa-
tions.
The SRS airbag is designed to
function on a one-time-only basis.
