If a change in the speed limit of 20 km/h or more
is de tected and automatic adoption of speed lim-
its is activated, the new speed limit is automati-
cally adop ted as the stored speed (/ page 244).The driven speed is adjusted when
theve hicle is
le ve l with the tra1c sign at the latest. In the case
of signs indicating entry into an urban area, the
speed is adap ted according tothe speed permit-
te d within the urban area. The speed limit display
in the driver's display is alw ays updated when the
ve hicle is le vel with the tra1c sign.
If yo u are driving on German mo torw ays and there
is no speed limit, the system uses the speed
stored for a str etch ofroad with no speed limit as
th e set speed. If you do not alter the stored speed
on a str etch ofroad with no speed limit, there c-
ommended speed of 130 km/h is adop ted.
If Ac tive Distance Assist DISTRONIC has been put
into passive mode bypressing the accelerator
pedal, only speed limits which are higher than the
set speed are adop ted.
The maximum permissible speed does not take
th ero ad condition and cur rent we ather and tra1c
conditions into account. Adjust your speed
accordingl y,when necessar y.

Ac tive Stop-and-Go Assist helps you when in traf-
fi c jams on multi-lane roads with separate car ria-
ge wa ys by automatically pulling away within up to
60 seconds and with moderate steering manoeu-
vres. It orients itself using theve hicle in front and
lane markings. Active Stop-and-Go Assist auto-
matically maintains a safe distance from theve hi-
cle in front and vehicles cutting in.
Ac tive Stop-and-Go Assist requ ires you, as the
driver, tokeep your hands on the steering wheel
at all times so that you are able tointer vene at
any time tocor rect the course of theve hicle and
ke ep it in lane.

Ac tive Stop-and-Go Assist activates automatically
when all of thefo llowing conditions are met:
R You are in a tra1c jam on a mo torw ay or high-

R You are tr avelling no faster than 60 km/h.

Ac tive Steering Assist is only available up to a
speed of 210 km/h. The system helps youto stay
in the centre of the lane bymeans of moderate
steering inter ventions. Depending on the speed
driven, Active Steering Assist uses theve hicles
ahead and lane markings as a refere nce.
% Depending on the countr y,in the lo wer speed
ra nge Active Steering Assist can use the sur-
ro unding tra1c as a refere nce. If necessar y,
Ac tive Steering Assist can then also pr ovide assistance when driving outside
the centre of

If th e de tection of lane markings and vehicles

The driver is requ ired tokeep their hands on the
stee ring wheel at all times and be able tointer-

cle and keep it in lane. The driver must expect a Driving and parking

at any time. If
th e system de tects that the driver has not
steered theve hicle for a considerable period of
time or has remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, an optical warning is given /rst. Display 1
appears in the driver's displa y.Ifth e driver still
does not steer theve hicle, or gives no con/rma-
tion tothe system, a warning tone sounds in addi-
tion tothe visual warning message.
If th e driver does not react tothis wa rning for a
considerable period, an emer gency stop is initi-
ated (/ page 247). The
warning is not issued or is stopped as soon as
th e system de tects that the driver has touched
th e steering wheel.
To uch de tection may be limited or inoperative in

R The driver is wearing glo ves.
R There is a steering wheel co ver on the steering
wheel.
If Ac tive Steering Assist de tects that a system
limit has been reached, a visual warning is issued
and a warning tone sounds.

Ac tive Steering Assist has a limited steering tor-
qu efo r lateral guidance. In some cases, the steer-
ing inter vention is not su1cient tokeep theve hi-
cle in the lane. The system may be impaired or may not function
in
thefo llowing instances:
R There is poor visibility, e.g. due tosno w,rain,
fo g, heavy spr ay,gr eatly varying light condi-
tions or strong shadow s onthe car riag ewa y.
R There is glare, e.g. from oncoming tra1c,
di re ct sunlight or re0ections.
R Insu1cient road illumination.
R The windscreen is dirty, mis ted up, damaged
or co vered in the vicinity of the camera, e.g.
by a stic ker.
R No, or se veral, unclear lane markings are pres-
ent for one lane, or the markings change
qu ickl y,forex ample, in a construction area or
junctions.
R The lane markings are wornawa y,dark or co v-
ered up, e.g. bydirt or sno w.
R Ifth e distance totheve hicle in front is too
short and thus the lane markings cannot be
de tected.
R The road is na rrow and winding.
R There are obs tacles on the lane or projecting
out into the lane, such as object mar kers. 246 246

until it is at a standstill. Sharp brake impulses
are also produced.
Depending on the countr y,a lane change tothe
adjacent right-hand lane is carr ied out, if possible.
% It is only possible tochange across one lane
and only into theright-hand lane, and not
onto the hard shoulder. When automatic braking is initiated,
Active Dis-
ta nce Assist DISTRONIC is deactivated. Depend-
ing on the countr y,the hazard warning light sys-
te m is switched on.
When theve hicle is stationar y,thefo llowing
actions are car ried out:
R The vehicle is secured with the electric par k-
ing brake.
R The vehicle is unloc ked.
R If possible, an emer gency call is placed tothe
Mercedes-Benz emerg ency call centre.
Before automatic braking is initiated, you can can-
cel Active Emer gency Stop Assist bystee ring.
Yo u can cancel the inter vention byActive Emer-
ge ncy Stop Assist aTer automatic braking is initi-
ated byone of thefo llowing actions:
R Accelerating or braking: the emer gency stop is
cancelled, but thewa rning message ,wa rning
to ne and po wer steering remain active
R Steering: po wer-assis ted steering is cancelled,

Active Emer gency Stop Assist can initiate an
emer gency stop a maximum of thre e times
within one driving cycle. Subsequentl y,Ac tive

The following conditions must be ful/lled for a
lane change:
R You are on a mo torw ay or high-speed major
ro ad.
R The vehicle speed is between appr oximately
80 km/h and 180 km/h.
R The neighbouring lane is separated bya bro-
ke n lane ma rking.
R Novehicle or obs tacle is de tected in the adja-
cent lane.
R Since the last time theve hicle was star ted,
th e sensors ha vedetected a vehicle at a suita-
ble dis tance behind your vehicle.
R Active Lane Change Assist is selected in the
multimedia system.
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active
St eering Assist are activated on mo torw ays. The system is not
available and must be reactiva-
te d in thefo llowing situations:
R Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active
St eering Assist werealready activated before
entering the mo torw ay.

If yo u apply the brake yourself in a critical situa-
tion or apply the brake during autonomous brak-
ing, situation-dependent braking assistance
occurs. The brake pressure increases up tomaxi-

Tr a1c Sign Assist de tects tra1c signs with the
multifunction camera and compares this with
information in the digital navigation map. It assists
yo uby displaying de tected speed limits and over-
ta king restrictions in the driver's display and in
th e head-up displa y.The system can issue a warn-
ing when youex ceed the maximum permissible
speed.
In some countries, the system can pr ovide you
with fu rther functions and can warnyou when you
are approaching pedestrian crossings or when
yo u are about todrive past stop signs or red lights
unintentionall y.
The camera also de tects and anal yses tra1c
signs with a restriction indicated byan additional
sign (e.g. when wet).
