The brake indicator momentarilyilluminates when you switch theignition on to confirm the lamp isfunctional. It may also illuminate when youapply the parking brake and the ignition ison. If it illuminates when your vehicle ismoving, make sure the parking brake isdisengaged. If the parking brake isdisengaged, this indicates low brake fluidlevel or a brake system fault. See anauthorized dealer.

Is brake dust on the wheels normal?
Brake dust could accumulate on thewheels, even under normal drivingconditions. Some dust is inevitable asthe brakes wear and does not contributeto brake noise. See Cleaning Wheels(page 364).
Will wet driving conditions effect mybraking abilities?
Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedala few times when driving from a carwash or standing water to dry thebrakes.
Is brake noise considered normal?
Occasional brake noise is normal. If ametal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out and anauthorized dealer should check them.If the vehicle has continuous vibrationor shudder in the steering wheel whilebraking, an authorized dealer shouldcheck your vehicle.
When should you replace the brake fluid?
Brake fluid absorbs water over timewhich degrades the effectiveness of thebrake fluid. Change the brake fluid atthe specified intervals to preventdegraded braking performance. SeeNormal Scheduled Maintenance (page467).

You can use the electric parking brake toslow or stop your vehicle in an emergency.
1.Pull the switch up and hold it.
The electric parking brake continues to slowyour vehicle down unless you release theswitch.
The red warning lamp illuminates, a tonesounds and the stoplamps turn on when youuse the electric parking brake in anemergency.
Note:Do not apply the electric parking brakewhen your vehicle is moving, except in anemergency. If you repeatedly use the electricparking brake to slow or stop your vehicle,you could cause damage to the brakesystem.
MANUALLY RELEASING THE

WHAT IS HILL START ASSIST
Hill Start Assist makes it easier for you to pullaway when your vehicle is on a slope withoutusing the parking brake.
HOW DOES HILL START ASSIST
WORK
When the system activates, your vehicleremains stationary for a few seconds afteryou release the brake pedal. This gives youtime to move your foot from the brake pedalto the accelerator pedal. The brakes releasewhen the engine has developed sufficienttorque to prevent your vehicle from rollingdown the slope.

HOW DOES AUTO HOLD WORK
Auto Hold applies the brakes to hold yourvehicle after you stop it and release thebrake pedal. This can help when waiting ona hill or in traffic.

USING AUTO HOLD

2.Release the brake pedal. The systemholds your vehicle at a standstill. Theauto hold active indicator remainsilluminated in the information display.
3.Pull away in the normal manner. Thesystem releases the brakes and the autohold active indicator switches off.
Note:The system only activates if you applyenough brake pressure on the brake pedal.
Note:Under certain conditions, the systemcould apply the electric parking brake. Thebrake system warning lamp illuminates. Theelectric parking brake releases when youpress the accelerator pedal. SeeAutomatically Releasing the ElectricParking Brake (page 224).
Note:The system switches off if you shiftinto reverse (R) and press the brake pedal.
There could be actions that can cause theauto hold system not to work when thefollowing occur:
•When you use active park assist.
•Your vehicle is in stay in neutral mode.

When you connect a trailer to your vehicle,the rear parking aid detects the trailer andprovides an alert. Disable the parking aidwhen you connect a trailer to prevent thealert.
Note:Certain add-on devices installedaround the bumper or fascia may createfalse alerts, for example, large trailer hitches,bike or surfboard racks, license platebrackets, bumper covers or any other devicethat could block the normal detection zoneof the parking aid system. Aftermarket sparetires or spare tire covers mounted to the reartailgate could cause false alerts from thepark aid system. Remove the add-on deviceto prevent false alerts.
Note: Keep the sensors free from snow, iceand large accumulations of dirt. If thesensors are covered, the system's accuracycan be affected.
Do not clean the sensors with sharp objects.
