CHILD SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Always make sure yourchild is secured properly in a device thatis appropriate for their height, age andweight. Child safety restraints must bebought separately from your vehicle.Failure to follow these instructions andguidelines may result in an increased riskof serious injury or death to your child.
WARNING: All children are shapeddifferently. The National Highway TrafficSafety Administration and other safetyorganizations, base their recommendationsfor child restraints on probable child height,age and weight thresholds, or on theminimum requirements of the law. Werecommend that you check with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger SafetyTechnician (CPST) to make sure that youproperly install the child restraint in yourvehicle and that you consult yourpediatrician to make sure you have a childrestraint appropriate for your child. Tolocate a child restraint fitting station and

WARNING: On hot days, thetemperature inside the vehicle can risevery quickly. Exposure of people or animalsto these high temperatures for even a shorttime can cause death or serious heatrelated injuries, including brain damage.Small children are particularly at risk.
WARNING: Do not place a rearwardfacing child restraint in front of an activeairbag. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Properly secure children12 years old and under in a rear seatingposition whenever possible. If you areunable to properly secure all children in arear seating position, properly secure thelargest child on the front seat. If you mustuse a forward facing child restraint on thefront seat, move the seat as far back aspossible. Failure to follow theseinstructions could result in personal injuryor death.

When installing a child restraint withseatbelts:
•Place the vehicle seat in the uprightposition before you install the childrestraint.
•Use the correct seatbelt buckle for thatseating position.
•Insert the belt tongue into the buckle.Make sure the tongue is securelyfastened in the buckle.
•Keep the buckle release button pointingup and away from the child restraint, withthe tongue between the child restraintand the release button, to preventaccidental unbuckling.
•Put the seatbelt in the automatic lockingmode.

CHILD RESTRAINTS RECOMMENDATION
Recommended Restraint TypeChild Size, Height, Weight, or Age
Use a child restraint (sometimes called an infant carrier,convertible seat, or toddler seat).Children weighing 40 lb (18 kg) or less (generally age four or younger).
Use a belt-positioning booster seat.
Children who have outgrown or no longer properly fit in a child restraint (generallychildren who are less than 57 in (1.45 m) tall, are greater than age four and lessthan age 12, and between 40 lb (18 kg) and 80 lb (36 kg) and upward to 100 lb(45 kg) if recommended by your child restraint manufacturer).
Use a vehicle seatbelt having the lap belt snug and lowacross the hips, shoulder belt centered across theshoulder and chest, and seat backrest upright.
Children who have outgrown or no longer properly fit in a belt-positioning boosterseat (generally children who are at least 57 in (1.45 m) tall or greater than 80 lb(36 kg) or 100 lb (45 kg) if recommended by child restraint manufacturer).
You are required by law to properly use childrestraints for infants and toddlers in theUnited States, Canada and Mexico.
Many states and provinces require that smallchildren use approved booster seats untilthey reach age eight, a height of 57 in(1.45 m) tall, or 80 lb (36 kg). Check your localand state or provincial laws for specificrequirements about the safety of children inyour vehicle.
When possible, properly restrain children 12years of age and under in a rear seatingposition of your vehicle. Accident statisticssuggest that children are safer when properlyrestrained in the rear seating positions thanin a front seating position.
When installing a rear facing child restraint,adjust the vehicle seats to avoid interferencebetween the child restraint and the vehicleseat in front of the child restraint.

4.Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to the directionthe tongue is coming from) for thatseating position until you hear a snap andfeel the latch engage. Make sure thetongue is latched securely by pulling onit.
5.To put the retractor in the automaticlocking mode, grasp the shoulder portionof the belt and pull downward until youpull all of the belt out.
Note:The automatic locking mode isavailable on the front passenger and rearseats.
6.Allow the belt to retract to remove slack.The belt clicks as it retracts to indicate itis in the automatic locking mode.
7.Try to pull the belt out of the retractor tomake sure the retractor is in theautomatic locking mode. You should notbe able to pull more belt out. If theretractor did not lock, unbuckle the beltand repeat Steps 5 and 6.
8.Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling up on the shoulder belt in orderto force slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remaining slackthat exists once you add the extra weight

Note:When you first switch the ignition on,the passenger airbag status indicator off andon lamps illuminate for a short period toconfirm they are functional.
The indicator lamps are in the overheadconsole.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable the front passengerfrontal airbag under these conditions:
•The front passenger seat is unoccupied.
•The system determines an infant ispresent in a child restraint.
•A passenger takes their weight off of theseat for a period of time.
•If there is a problem with the airbagsystem or the passenger sensing system.
Even with this technology, parents arestrongly encouraged to always properlyrestrain children in the rear seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables the front passengerfrontal airbag, the passenger airbagstatus indicator illuminates the off lamp.
•If you have installed the child restraintand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the on lamp, switch yourvehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom your vehicle and reinstall therestraint following the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.
The front passenger sensing system workswith sensors that are part of the frontpassenger seat and seatbelt. The sensorsare designed to detect the presence of aproperly seated occupant and determine ifthe front passenger frontal airbag should beenabled.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem enables the front passengerfrontal airbag, the passenger airbagstatus indicator illuminates the on lamp.
If a person of adult size is sitting in the frontpassenger seat, but the passenger airbagstatus indicator off lamp is illuminated, it ispossible that the person is not sittingproperly in the seat. If this happens:
•Switch your vehicle off and ask theperson to place the seat backrest in anupright position.
•Have the person sit upright in the seat,centered on the seat cushion, with theperson's legs comfortably extended.
•Restart your vehicle and have the personremain in this position for about twominutes. This allows the system to detectthat person and enable the passengerfrontal airbag.
•If the indicator off lamp remainsilluminated even after this, you shouldadvise the person to ride in the rear seat.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit upright, leaning againstthe seat backrest, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor.

Sitting improperly can increase the chanceof injury in a crash event. For example, if anoccupant slouches, lies down, turnssideways, sits forward, leans forward orsideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash greatlyincreases.
If you think that the state of the passengerairbag status indicator lamp is incorrect,check for the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrest mappocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.
The listed conditions could cause the weightof a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat could appear heavier orlighter due to the conditions listed.
Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 72).
If the airbag readiness light is on, do thefollowing:
•Pull your vehicle over.
•Switch your vehicle off.
•Check for any objects lodged underneaththe front passenger seat or cargointerfering with the seat.
•Remove the obstruction if found.
•Restart your vehicle.
•Wait at least two minutes and verify thatthe airbag readiness light in theinstrument cluster is no longerilluminated.
•If the airbag readiness light in theinstrument cluster remains illuminated,there may be a problem due to the frontpassenger sensing system.
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle in for serviceimmediately.
