This chapter provides you with important information about how to protect
yourself and your passengers. It explains how to properly use your seats and
seat belts, and how your air bags work.
Additionally, this chapter explains how to properly restrain infants and children
in your vehicle.

Safety system
IMPORTANT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
You will find many safety precautions
and recommendations throughout
this section, and throughout this man-
ual. The safety precautions in this
section are among the most impor-
tant.
Always wear your seat belt
A seat belt is your best protection in
all types of accidents. Air bags are
designed to supplement seat belts,
not replace them. So even though
your vehicle is equipped with air
bags, ALWAYS make sure you and
your passengers wear your seat
belts, and wear them properly.
Restrain all children
All children under age 13 should ride
in your vehicle properly restrained in
a rear seat, not the front seat. Infants
and small children should be
restrained in an appropriate child
restraint. Larger children should use
a booster seat with the lap/shoulder
belt until they can use the seat belt
properly without a booster seat.
Air bag hazards
Whilst air bags can save lives, they
can also cause serious or fatal inju-
ries to occupants who sit too close to
them, or who are not properly
restrained. Infants, young children,
and short adults are at the greatest
risk of being injured by an inflating air
bag. Follow all instructions and warn-
ings in this manual.
Driver distraction
Driver distraction presents a serious
and potentially deadly danger, espe-
cially for inexperienced drivers.
Safety should be the first concern
when behind the wheel and drivers
need to be aware of the wide array of
potential distractions, such as drowsi-
ness, reaching for objects, eating,
personal grooming, other passen-
gers, and using mobile phones.
Drivers can become distracted when
they take their eyes and attention off
the road or their hands off the wheel
to focus on activities other than driv-
ing. To reduce your risk of distraction
and an accident:
‡ALWAYS set up your mobile devic-
es (i.e., MP3 players, phones, navi-
gation units, etc.) when your vehicle
is parked or safely stopped.
‡ONLY use your mobile device when
allowed by laws and conditions per-
mit safe use.
‡
NEVER text or email whilst driving.
Most countries have laws prohibit-
ing drivers from texting. Some
countries and cities also prohibit
drivers from using handheld
phones.
‡NEVER let the use of a mobile
device distract you from driving.
You have a responsibility to your
passengers and others on the road
to always drive safely, with your
hands on the wheel as well as your
eyes and attention on the road.

The purpose of the switch is to dis-
able the passenger’s front air bag in
order to transport occupants who are
at increased risk for air bag-related
injury due to age, size, or medical
condition.

To deactivate the passenger’s front
air bag:
Insert the key or a similar rigid device
into the passenger’s front air bag ON/
OFF switch and turn it to the OFF
position. The passenger air bag OFF
indicator (
) will illuminate and stay
on until the passenger’s front air
bag is reactivated.

To reactivate the passenger’s front
air bag:
Insert the key or a similar rigid device
into the passenger’s front air bag ON/
OFF switch and turn it to the ON posi-
tion. The passenger air bag ON indi-
cator (
) will illuminate and stay on
for 60 seconds.
WARNING
Never allow an adult passenger to
ride in the front passenger seat
when the passenger air bag OFF
indicator is illuminated. During a
collision, the air bag will not inflate
if the indicator is illuminated. Turn
on the passenger’s front air bag or
have your passenger move to the
rear seat.
WARNING
If the passenger’s front air bag ON/
OFF switch malfunctions, the fol-
lowing conditions may occur:
‡The air bag warning light (
) on
the instrument cluster will illumi-
nate.
‡The passenger air bag OFF indi-
cator (
) will not illuminate and
the ON indicator (
) will come on
and go off after approximately 60
seconds. The passenger’s front
air bag will inflate in a frontal
impact even though the passen-
ger’s front air bag ON/OFF switch
is set to the OFF position.
‡We recommend that a HYUNDAI
authorised repairer inspect the
passenger’s front air bag ON/
OFF switch and the SRS air bag
system as soon as possible.

SRS warning light
The SRS (Supplement Restraint
System) air bag warning light on the
instrument panel displays the air bag
symbol depicted in the illustration.
The system checks the air bag elec-
trical system for malfunctions. The
light indicates that there is a potential
problem with your air bag system,
which could include your side and/or
curtain air bags used for rollover pro-
tection (if equipped with rollover sen-
sor).
WARNING
If your SRS malfunctions, the air
bag may not inflate properly dur-
ing an accident increasing the risk
of serious injury or death.
If any of the following conditions
occur, your SRS is malfunction-
ing:
‡The light does not turn on for
approximately six seconds when
the ignition switch is in the ON
position.
‡The light stays on after illuminat-
ing for approximately six sec-
onds.
‡The light comes on whilst the
vehicle is in motion.
‡The light blinks when the engine
is running.
We recommend that a HYUNDAI
authorised repairer inspect the
SRS as soon as possible if any of
these conditions occur.During a frontal collision, sensors will
detect the vehicle’s deceleration. If
the rate of deceleration is high
enough, the control unit will inflate the
front air bags, at the time and with the
force needed.
The front air bags help protect the
driver and front passenger by
responding to frontal impacts in which
seat belts alone cannot provide ade-
quate restraint. When needed, the
side air bags help provide protection
in the event of a side impact or roll-
over by supporting the side upper
body area.
‡Air bags are activated (able to
inflate if necessary) only when the
ignition switch is in the ON position.
‡Air bags inflate in the event of cer-
tain frontal or side collisions to help
protect the occupants from serious
physical injury.
‡Generally, air bags are designed to
inflate based upon the severity of a
collision it’s direction etc. These
two factors determine whether the
sensors produce an electronic
deployment/inflation signal.
‡The front air bags will completely
inflate and deflate in an instant. It is
virtually impossible for you to see
the air bags inflate during an acci-
dent. It is much more likely that you
will simply see the deflated air bags
hanging out of their storage com-
partments after the collision.
