Tailgate
Precautions for Opening/Closing the Tailgate
Always make sure individuals and objects are clear of the tailgate before opening or
closing it.
• Open the tailgate all the way.
u If it is not fully opened, the tailgate may begin to close under its own weight.
• Be careful when it is windy. The wi nd may cause the tailgate to close.
Keep the tailgate closed while driving to: u Avoid possible damage.
u Prevent exhaust gas from leaking into the vehicle.

1Precautions for Opening/Closing the Tailgate
Be careful not to hit your head on the tailgate or to
put your hands between th e tailgate and the cargo
area when closing the tailgate.
When you are storing or picking up cargo from the
cargo area, or by using a forward and back kicking
motion under the center of the rear bumper for
hands free access
*, while the engine is idling, do not
stand in front of the ex haust pipe. You may get
burned.
Do not allow any passenger in the cargo space. They
may get hurt during hard braking, a sudden
acceleration, or a crash.
3WARNING
Anyone caught in the path of a tailgate
that is being opened or closed can be
seriously injured.
Make sure that all people are clear of the

Opening/Closing the Tailgate
When all the doors are unlocked or you press
the tailgate unlock button on the remote
transmitter, the tailgate is unlocked.
Press the outer handle and lift open the
tailgate.
If you are carrying the keyless remote, you do
not have to unlock the tailgate before
opening it.
To close the tailgate, grab the inner handle,
pull the tailgate down, and push it closed
from outside.
If you close the tailgate when all the doors are
locked, the tailgate locks automatically.

Make sure cargo or othe r items do not touch the
tailgate support struts.

can lock/unlock the tailg ate while someone else

tailgate cannot be closed.

If you press the outer ha ndle of the tailgate for
no longer than one second, the tailgate opens
automatically. u The beeper sounds.
u If you want to open the tailgate
manually, press the button for more than
one second.

power tailgate is moving, it will stop.
Press the outer handle, and the power tailgate
will reverse direction.

1. Store the center seat belt first. Insert the
latch plate into the slot on the side of the
anchor buckle.
2. Retract the seat belt into the holder on the
ceiling.

lowest position. Put the armrest back into
the seat-back.

The rear seat-backs can be folded down to
accommodate bulkier items in the cargo area.
Remove any items from th e rear seat cushion and
floor before you fold down the rear seat.
When returning the seat-back to its original position,
push it firmly back. Also, m ake sure all rear shoulder
belts are positioned in front of the seat-back.
Make sure all items in the cargo area or items
extending through the opening into the rear
seats are properly secured. Loose items can fly
forward if you have to brake hard.
Make sure that the folded seat-back does not press
against the front passenger seat, as this can cause the
weight sensors in the front passenger seat to work

Make sure the seat-back, head restraints and seat
cushion are securely latche d back into place before
driving.

The map lights can be turned on and off by
pressing the lenses.
The cargo area lights comes on when you
open the tailgate.

position and any door is open, the map light will not
go off when you press the lenses.

The cargo area lights do not have an on/off switch. In
case the tailgate is left open for an extended period
of time, they automatically go out in 30 minutes.

handle. Pull it down to use it.
The tie-down anchors on the cargo area floor
can be used to install a net for securing items.
