Maintenance and care
Check the battery as follows.
■Battery exterior
Make sure that the battery termi-
nals are not corroded and that there
are no loose connections, cracks,
or loose clamps.
Terminals
Hold-down clamp
■Checking battery fluid
Check that the level is between the
“UPPER LEVEL/max.” and
“LOWER LEVEL/min.” lines.
“Upper line/max.” line
“Lower line/min.” line
Add distilled water before the fluid level
drops below the “Lower line/min.” line.
■Checking the battery condition
(vehicles with battery indica-
tor)
Check the battery condition by indi-
cator color.
Red and clear: Replacement is
necessary. Have the battery
checked by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
Clear and red: Charging is nec-
essary. Have the vehicle
inspected by any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
Blue and red: Good condition
■Adding distilled water
1 Remove the vent plug.
2 Add distilled water.
If it is difficult to see the fluid level from

denser as they may be hot and cause serious injuries, such as burns.

■If the key battery is depleted
The following symptoms may occur:
●The smart entry & start system (if equipped) and wireless remote control will not function properly.
●The operational range will be reduced.
z Flathead screwdriver
z Small flathead screwdriver
z Lithium battery CR2032 (vehi-
cles without a smart entry & start
system), or CR2450 (vehicles
with a smart entry & start sys-
tem)
■Use a CR2032 (vehicles without a smart entry & start system) or
CR2450 (vehicles with a smart entry & start system) lithium bat-tery
●Batteries can be purchased at any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer, local electrical appliance
NOTICE
■When using the air conditioning system
Make sure that a filter is always installed.Using the air conditioning system
without a filter may cause damage to the system.
■To prevent damage to the filter cover
When moving the filter cover in the
direction of arrow to release the fit- ting, pay attention not to apply exces-sive force to the claws. Otherwise, the
claws may be damaged.
Wireless remote con-
trol/electronic key bat-
tery
Replace the battery with a new
one if it is depleted.
As the key may be damaged if
the following procedure is not
performed properly, it is rec-
ommended that key battery
replacement be performed by
any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer.

When trouble arises
1Stop the vehicle in a safe place
and turn off the air conditioning
system, and then stop the
engine.
2 If you see steam: Carefully lift
the hood after the steam sub-
sides.
If you do not see steam: Care-
fully lift the hood.
3 After the engine has cooled
down sufficiently, inspect the
hoses and radiator core (radia-
tor) for any leaks.
WARNING
■When replacing the battery
●When the vent plug and indicator
are close to the hold down clamp, the battery fluid (sulfuric acid) may leak.
●For information regarding battery replacement, contact any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
NOTICE
■When handling jumper cables
When connecting the jumper cables, ensure that they do not become
entangled in the cooling fan or engine drive belt.
If your vehicle overheats
The following may indicate that
your vehicle is overheating.
z The engine coolant tempera-
ture gauge ( →P.86, 90) is in
the red zone or a loss of
engine power is experienced.
(For example, the vehicle
speed does not increase.)
z “Engine Coolant Temp High
Stop in a Safe Place See
Owner’s Manual” is shown on
the multi-information display.
z Steam comes out from under
the hood.
