When trouble arises
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● One or both of the battery t erminals may be disconnected.
● The battery may be discharged. ( P. 524)
● There may be a malfunction in the steering lock system (vehicles
with a smart key system).
Contact your Toyota dealer if the problem cannot be repaired, o r if repair
procedures are unknown.
When the engine does not start, the following steps can be used as an
interim measure to start the engine if the engine switch is fun ctioning
normally:
Set the parking brake.
Shift the shift lever to P.
Turn the engine switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Press and hold the engine switch for about 15 seconds while
depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the engine can be start ed using the above steps, the sy stem
may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyot a
dealer.
The starter motor does not turn over, the interior lights and h ead-
lights do not turn on, o r the horn does not sound.

If the vehicle becomes stuck
Stop the engine. Set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to P
(automatic transmission) o r N (manual transmission).
Remove the mud, snow or sand from around the rear wheels.
Place wood, stones or some other material to help provide tract ion
under the rear wheels.
Restart the engine.
Shift the shift lever to D or R (automatic transmission), or 1 or R
(manual transmission) and release the parking brake. Then, whil e
exercising caution, depress the accelerator pedal.
■ When it is difficult to free the vehicle
Press to turn off TRAC.
Turn off TRAC/active traction control system (if equipped) and/ or VSC if these
functions are hampering your attempts to free the vehicle.

Carry out the following procedures if the tires spin or the vehicle
becomes stuck in mud, dirt or snow:
WARNING
■ When attempting to f ree a stuck vehicle
If you choose to push the vehicle back and forth to free it, ma ke sure the
surrounding area is clear to avoid striking other vehicles, obj ects or people.
The vehicle may also lunge forward or lunge back suddenly as it becomes
free. Use extreme caution.
■ When shifting the shift lever ( vehicles with an automatic trans mission)
Be careful not to shift the shift lever with the accelerator pe dal depressed.
This may lead to unexpected rapid acceleration of the vehicle t hat may
cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

●Vehicles without a smart key system:
It is locked to prevent theft of the vehicle if the key is removed from the
engine switch. ( P. 202)
●Vehicles with a smart key system:
It is locked automatically to prevent theft of the vehicle. ( P. 207)
●Is the window lock switch pressed?
The power window except for the one at the driver’s seat cannot be oper-
ated if the window lock switch is pressed. ( P. 156)
●The auto power off function will be operated if the vehicle is left in ACCES-
SORY or IGNITION ON mode (the engine is not running) for a peri od of
time. ( P. 206)
●The seat belt reminder light is flashing
Are the driver and the front passenger wearing the seat belts? (P. 477)
●The parking brake indicator is on
Is the parking brake released? ( P. 218)
