Operation of each component
The power back door can be
opened/closed using the power
back door switch or wireless
remote control. (P. 1 2 6 )
Push and hold the switch to close
or open.

When the power back door is lo cked: While carrying an elec-
tronic key, press and hold the back door opener switch.
The upper back door will automatically* open.
*: Using the customization function, the upper back door can be s et to
not automatically open, even when the back door opener switch i s
pressed. ( P. 594)
When the automatic open function is disabled, the upper back do or
can be opened by lifting it up with the back door opener switch
pressed and held.

back door handle, and make
sure to push the back door
down from the outside to close
it.

■Power back door oper ating conditions (vehicles with power back door)
● When the engine switch is off or in accessory mode, the power b ack door
can be opened and closed if the power back door main switch is on and all
of the following conditions are met.
• The lower back door is closed (only when closing)

● When the engine switch is in IGNITION ON mode, the power back d oor can
be opened and closed if the power back door main switch is on and all of the
following conditions are met.

• The power back door is unlocked (except when closing)
• The lower back door is closed (only when closing)

• The vehicle speed is below 1 mph (3 km/h) and the shift lever is in P
*1: If the lower back door is opened while the upper back door is in a closing
operation, it automatically opens again.
*2: The back door cannot be operated using the wireless remote con trol.
■ If the back door opener is inoperative
The back door can be operated from the inside.
Remove the cover on the back door
trim.
Use a cloth to prevent scratches.
Remove the screw and cover.

Push the lever for the back door motor, open the back door.

■ Jam protection function (veh icles with power back door)
If anything obstructs the power back door while it is closing/o pening, the back
door will automatically operate in the opposite direction.
■ When re-connecting the battery (vehicles with power back door)
To enable the power back door to operate properly, perform the following:
● Unlock the back door using the door lock switch
● Close the back door manually
■ Back door closer (vehicl es with power back door)
In the event that the upper side and lower side of the back doo r are left
slightly open, the back door closer will automatically close th em to the fully
closed position.
■ Fall-down protection function ( vehicles with power back door)
While the power back door is opening automatically, applying ex cessive force
to it will stop the opening operation to prevent the power back door from rap-
idly falling down.

■Back door reserve lock function ( vehicles with power back door)
This function is a function which reserves locking of all doors , beforehand,
when the back door is open. When the following procedure is per formed, all
the doors except the back door are locked and then back door wi ll also be
locked at the same time it is closed.
Close all doors, except the back door.
Perform any of the following during the automatic closing opera tion of the
back door.
• Press the lock button on the wireless remote control. ( P. 114)
• Touch the lock sensor on the side door handle with carrying th e electronic
key on your person. ( P. 118)
Also, if the back door does not fully close due to the operatio n of the jam
protection function, etc., while the back door is automatically closing after a
reserve lock operation is performed, the reserve lock function is canceled
and all the doors will unlock.

WARNING
■While driving
● Keep the back door closed while driving.
If the back door is left open, it may hit near-by objects while driving or lug-
gage may be unexpectedly thrown out, causing an accident.
In addition, exhaust gases may enter the vehicle, causing death or a seri-
ous health hazard. Make sure to close the back door before driv ing.
● Before driving the vehicle, make sure that the back door is fully closed. If
the back door is not fully closed, it may open unexpectedly whi le driving,
causing an accident.
● Never let anyone sit in the luggage compartment. In the event o f sudden
braking, sudden swerving or a collision, they are susceptible t o death or
serious injury.
■ When children are in the vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
● Do not allow children to play in the luggage compartment.
If a child is accidentally locked in the luggage compartment, they could
have heat exhaustion or other injuries.
● Do not allow a child to open or close the back door.
Doing so may cause the back door to move unexpectedly, or cause the
child’s hands, head, or neck to be caught by the closing back d oor.

WARNING
■Operating the back door
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause parts of the body to be caught, resu lting in death
or serious injury.
● Remove any heavy loads, such as snow and ice, from the back doo r
before opening it. Failure to do so may cause the back door sud denly shut
again after it is opened.
● When opening or closing the back door, thoroughly check to make sure
the surrounding area is safe.
● If anyone is in the vicinity, make sure they are safe and let t hem know that
the back door is about to open or close.
● Use caution when opening or closing the back door in windy weat her as it
may move abruptly in strong wind.
● The back door may suddenly shut if it is
not opened fully. It is more difficult to
open or close the back door on an
incline than on a level surface, so
beware of the back door unexpectedly
opening or closing by itself. Make sure
that the back door is fully open and
secure before using the luggage com-
partment.

WARNING
●Do not pull on the back door damper stay to close the back door , and do
not hang on the back door damper stay.
Doing so may cause hands to be caught or the back door damper stay to
break, causing an accident.
● If a bicycle carrier or similar heavy object is attached to the back door, it
may suddenly shut again after being opened, causing someone’s hands,
head or neck to be caught and injured. When installing an acces sory part
to the back door, using a genuine Toyota part is recommended.
● When closing the back door, take extra
care to prevent your fingers etc. from
being caught. Also pay attention to your
personal belongings such as bags and
ties.
● When closing the back door, make sure
to press it lightly on its outer surface. If
the back door handle is used to fully
close the back door, it may result in
hands or arms being caught.
