Q Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recom-
mended:
O For the first 300 km (200 miles):
Avoid sudden stops.
O For the first 800 km (500 miles) (with towing hitch):
Do not tow a trailer. ( P. 207)
O For the first 1000 km (600 miles):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in the low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
• Do not drive slowly with the manual transmission in a high gear.
Q Idling time before engine stop (diesel engine only)
To prevent damage to the turbocharger, allow the engine to idle immediately
after high-load driving.
Q Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. ( P. 627)

Q After driving on muddy roads in poor condition (for EURO VI models*
with 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV engines)
Check the cooling fins of the urea injector and clear away any foreign objects
or substances such as leaves or mud. If any of the above parts is extremely
dirty or you are not sure of their condition, have your vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer.
*: EURO VI is an emission standard. If it is not clear that your vehicle meets
relevant standards, contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota autho-
rized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

QWhen parking the vehicle
On vehicles with automatic transmission, always set the parking brake, and
shift the shift lever to P. Failure to do so may cause the vehicle to move or
the vehicle may accelerate suddenly if the accelerator pedal is accidentally
depressed.
Q Avoiding damage to vehicle parts
O Do not turn the steering wheel fully in either direction and hold it there for
an extended period of time.
Doing so may damage the power steering pump.
O When driving over bumps in the road, drive as slowly as possible to avoid
damaging the wheels, underside of the vehicle, etc.
O Diesel engine: Make sure to idle the engine immediately after high-load
driving. Stop the engine only after the turbocharger has cooled down.
Failure to do so may cause damage to the turbocharger.
O Diesel engine: In an extremely cold environment, idle the engine for more
than 30 seconds after starting the engine. Do not race the engine while
idling.
Q If you get a flat tire while driving
A flat or damaged tire may cause the following situations. Hold the steering
wheel firmly and gradually depress the brake pedal to slow down the vehi-
cle.
O It may be difficult to control your vehicle.
O The vehicle will make abnormal sounds or vibrations.
O The vehicle will lean abnormally.

Q Transmission protection function
If the tires spin continually when the vehicle becomes stuck in mud, dirt or
snow, or if the accelerator pedal is depressed and released repeatedly while
driving, the automatic transmission temperature may become too high and
the automatic transmission may be damaged.
To avoid damaging the automatic transmission, the system may temporarily
lock the gear.
If the automatic transmission temperature falls, the gear locking is canceled
and the automatic transmission is returned to the normal operation.
Q If the warning message is displayed
When the warning message goes out, the vehicle can be driven again.
If the warning message does not go out after waiting a while, have your vehi-
cle inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer.
Q AI-SHIFT
The AI-SHIFT automatically selects the suitable gear according to driver per-
formance and driving conditions.
The AI-SHIFT automatically operates when the shift lever is in D. (Shifting the
shift lever to S cancels the function.)
If the automatic transmission fluid tem-
perature warning message is displayed
while driving, make sure to return to D
position driving and reduce speed by eas-
ing off the accelerator pedal. Stop the
vehicle in a safe place, shift the shift lever
to P and let the engine idle until the warn-
ing message goes out.
WARNING
Q When driving on slippery road surfaces
Do not accelerate or shift gears suddenly.
Sudden changes in engine braking may cause the vehicle to spin or skid,
resulting in an accident.
Q To prevent an accident when releasing the shift lock
Before pressing the shift lock override button, make sure to set the parking
brake and depress the brake pedal.
If the accelerator pedal is accidentally depressed instead of the brake pedal
when the shift lock override button is pressed and the shift lever is shifted
out of P, the vehicle may suddenly start, possibly leading to an accident
resulting in death or serious injury.

XRegeneration
O During normal driving, the filter is automatically regenerated
every several hundred kilometers*. During regeneration, the DPF
system warning message “DPF regeneration in progress” is dis-
played on the multi-information display.
O When the amount of accumulated deposit reaches a certain
level, regeneration can be performed. ( P. 371)
*: Differs in accordance with weather, driving conditions, etc.
XSystem characteristics
The DPF system has the following characteristics:
O Idle speed increases during regeneration
O The smell of the exhaust gas differs from that of a conventional
diesel vehicle
O White smoke may be emitted from the exhaust pipe during
regeneration. However, this does not indicate a malfunction.
The amount of accumulated deposit in the DPF system can be con-
firmed on the multi-information display.
The DPF deposition status appears when the DPF system switch is
pressed or the warning massage is displayed. Use the displayed DPF
deposition as a reference.
