QOperation signals
A buzzer (if equipped) sounds and the em ergency flashers flash to indicate
that the doors have been locked/unlocked using the smart entry & start sys-
tem or the wireless remote control. (Locked: once; Unlocked: twice)
Q Security feature
If a door is not opened within approximately 30 seconds after the vehicle is
unlocked using the smart entry & start system or the wireless remote control,
the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again.
Q Door lock buzzer (vehicles with wireless remote control and smart entry
& start system)
If an attempt to lock the doors is made when a door is not fully closed, a
buzzer sounds continuously for 5 seconds. Fully close the door to stop the
buzzer, and lock the vehicle once more.
Q If the entry function (vehicles with smart entry & start system) or the
wireless remote control (if equipped) does not operate properly
O Vehicles without smart entry & start system: Use the key to lock and unlock

Move the inside lock button to the lock position.
Close the door while pulling the door handle.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system (vehicles with power door
lock system): The driver’s door cannot be locked if either of the door is
open and the key is in the engine switch.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system: The door cannot be locked if
the engine switch is in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode, or the
electronic key is left inside the vehicle.
However, the key may not be detected correctly and the door may be
locked.

The following functions can be set or canceled:
QSetting and canceling the functions
To switch between setting and canceling, follow the procedure
below.
Close all the doors and turn the engine switch to the “ON” posi-
tion (vehicles without smart entry & start system) or IGNITION
ON mode (vehicles with smart entry & start system). (Perform
step within 20 seconds.)
Press and hold the driver’s
door lock switch ( or
) for approximately 5
seconds and then release.

When the setting or canceling operation is complete, all the doors are
locked and then unlocked after the driver’s door lock switch is

QImpact detection door lock release system (if equipped)
In the event that the vehicle is subject to a strong impact, all the doors are
unlocked. Depending on the force of the impact or the type of accident, how-
ever, the system may not operate.
Q Conditions affecting operation
Vehicles without smart entry & start system
The wireless remote control function may not operate normally in the follow-
ing situations:
O Near a TV tower, radio station, electric power plant, airport or other facility
that generates strong radio waves
O When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone or other wireless communi-
cation device
O When multiple wireless keys are in the vicinity
O When the wireless key is in contact with, or is covered by a metallic object
O When a wireless key (that emits radio waves) is being used nearby
O When the wireless key has been left near an electrical appliance such as a
personal computer

WARNING
QTo prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.
Failing to do so may result in a door opening and an occupant falling out,
resulting in death or serious injury.
O Ensure that all doors are properly closed and locked.
O Do not pull the inside handle of the doors while driving.
Be especially careful for the driver’s door, as the door may be opened
even if the inside lock button is in locked position.
O Set the rear door child-protector locks when children are seated in the rear
seats.

Q Effective range (areas within which the electronic key is detected)
When starting the engine or changing engine switch modes
The system can be operated when the electronic key is inside the vehicle.
(The electronic key is not detected when it is on the floor or on the instru-
ment panel.)
Q Battery-saving function
The battery-saving function will be acti vated in order to prevent the battery
from being discharged while the vehicle is not in operation for a long time.
Q Electronic Key Battery-Saving Function
When battery-saving mode is set, battery depletion is minimized by stopping
the electronic key from receiving radio waves.
When locking or unlocking the doors
The system can be operated when the
electronic key is within about 0.7 m (2.3
ft.) of either of the lock/unlock button on
the outside door handle. (Only the
doors detecting the key can be oper-
ated.)
Press twice while pressing and
holding . Confirm that the electronic
key indicator flashes 4 times.
While the battery-saving mode is set, the
smart entry & start system cannot be
used. To cancel the function, press any of
the electronic key buttons.

Q Conditions affecting operation
The smart entry & start system uses weak radio waves. In the following situa-
tions, the communication between the electronic key and the vehicle may be
affected, preventing the smart entry & start system, wireless remote control
and engine immobilizer system from operating properly.
(Ways of coping: P. 600)
O When the electronic key battery is depleted
O Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large dis-
play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical
noise
O When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other
wireless communication device
O When the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by the following
metallic objects
• Cards to which aluminum foil is attached
• Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside
• Metallic wallets or bags
• Coins
• Hand warmers made of metal
• Media such as CDs and DVDs
O When multiple electronic keys are in the vicinity
O When other wireless keys (that emit radio waves) are being used nearby
O When carrying the electronic key together with the following devices that
emit radio waves
• Another vehicle’s electronic key or a wireless key that emits radio waves
• Personal computers or pers onal digital assistants (PDAs)
• Digital audio players
• Portable game systems
O If window tint with a metallic content or metallic objects are attached to the
rear window
O When the electronic key is placed near a battery charger or electronic devices

Q Note for the entry function
O Even if the electronic key is within the effective range (detection areas)
when locking or unlocking the doors, the system may not operate properly if
the electronic key is too close to the window or outside door handle, near
the ground, or in a high place.
O Do not leave the electronic key on top of the instrument panel or near the
door pockets when exiting the vehicle. Depending on the radio wave recep-
tion conditions, it may be detected by the antenna outside the cabin and the
doors will become lockable from the outside, possibly trapping the electronic
key inside the vehicle.
O As long as the electronic key is within the effective range, the doors may be
locked or unlocked by anyone. However, only the doors detecting the elec-
tronic key can be used to unlock the vehicle.
O Even if the electronic key is not inside the vehicle, it may be possible to start
the engine if the electronic key is near the window.
O If the wireless remote control is used to lock the doors when the electronic
key is near the vehicle, there is a possibility that the door may not be
unlocked by the entry function. (Use the wireless remote control to unlock
the doors.)
O Pulling the outside door handle while pressing the lock/unlock button on the
outside door handle may prevent the doors from being unlocked. In this
case, return the door handle to the original position, press the lock/unlock
button again, and check that the doors unlock before pulling the door handle
again.
O Unlocking the vehicle may take more time if another electronic key is within
the effective range.
Q When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods
O To prevent theft of the vehicle, do not leave the electronic key within 2 m
(6 ft.) of the vehicle.
O The smart entry & start system can be deactivated in advance. Ask any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable
repairer for details.
Q To operate the system properly
Make sure to carry the electronic key when operating the system. Do not get
the electronic key too close to the vehicle when operating the system from the
outside of the vehicle.
Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the key
may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly. (The
alarm may go off accidentally, or the door lock prevention function may not
operate.)

Q Electronic key battery depletion
O The standard battery life is 1 to 2 years.
O If the battery becomes low, an alarm will sound in the cabin when the engine
stops.
O As the electronic key always receives radio waves, the battery will become
depleted even if the electronic key is not used. The following symptoms indi-
cate that the electronic key battery may be depleted. Replace the battery
when necessary. ( P. 516)
• The smart entry & start system or the wireless remote control does not
operate.
• The detection area becomes smaller.
• The LED indicator on the key surface does not turn on.
O To avoid serious deterioration, do not leave the electronic key within 1 m (3
ft.) of the following electrical appliances that produce a magnetic field:
•TVs
• Personal computers
• Cellular phones, cordless phones and battery chargers
• Recharging cellular phones or cordless phones
• Table lamps
• Induction cookers
Q If “Key left inside vehicle” is shown on the multi-information display
An attempt was made to lock the doors using the smart entry & start system
while the electronic key was still inside the vehicle, or an attempt was made
to lock either front door by opening a door and putting the inside lock button
into the lock position, then closing the door by pulling on the outside door
handle with the electronic key still inside the vehicle.
Retrieve the electronic key from the vehicle and lock the doors again.
Q Customization that can be configured at any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer
