unctions of ABS The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
regula testhe
brake pressure in critical driving situations:
R During braking, for instance, at maximum full-
stop braking or if there is insu1cient tyre trac-
tion, the wheels are pr evented from locking.
R Vehicle steerability while braking is ensu red.
If ABS inter venes when braking, you will feel a
pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardous road con-
ditions and can ser veas a reminder totake extra
care while driving.

If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance
in an emer gency braking situation is

emer gency braking situation with additional brake

Shortly before the set speed is reached, it
appears in the Instrument Displa y.When you con-
/rm the message, display messages no longer
appear until you switch o. theve hicle. The speed
will only be displ ayed again once theve hicle has
been restar ted or if the set speed is changed.

Ac tive Tra1c Jam Assist helps you when in tra1c
jams on multi-lane roads with separate car riage-
wa ys by automatically pulling away within 60 sec-
onds and with mode rate stee ring manoeuvres. It
orients itself using theve hicle in front and lane
markings. Active Tra1c Jam Assist automatically
main tains a safe distance from theve hicle in front
and vehicles cutting in.
Ac tive Tra1c Jam Assist requ ires you, as the
driver, tokeep your hands on the steering wheel
at all times so that you are able tointer vene at
any time tocor rect the course of theve hicle and
ke ep it in lane. Obser vethe no tes on driving sys-
te ms and your responsibility; you may otherwise

Ac tive Tra1c Jam Assist activates automatically as

The driver is requ ired tokeep their hands on the
stee ring wheel at all times and be able tointer-
ve ne at any time tocor rect the course of theve hi-
cle and keep it in lane. The driver must expect a
ch ange from active topassive mode or vice versa
at any time. If
th e system de tects that the driver has not
steered theve hicle for a considerable period of time or has
remo vedth eir hands from the steering
wheel, display 1appears. If the driver still does
not steer theve hicle, a warning tone sounds in
addition tothe visual warning message.
If th e driver does not react tothewa rning for a
considerable period, the system can initiate an
emer gency stop (/ page 238).
If th e driver steers, no warning is issued, or the
wa rning is ended.

cluster.
If yo u do not react tothewa rning, autonomous
braking can be initiated in critical situations.
In especially critical situations, Active Brake Assist
can initiate autonomous braking directl y.In this

ta ke into account road, weather or tra1c condi-
tions. Active Lane Keeping Assist is only an aid.
Yo u are responsible for maintaining a safe dis-
ta nce totheve hicle in front, forve hicle speed, for
braking in good time and for st aying in lane.
The status of Active Lane Keeping Assist is dis-
pla yed in the on-board computer:
R 00B0 (gre en): Active Lane Keeping Assist is
active and operating.
R 00B0 (gre y): Active Lane Keeping Assist is
active but not operating.
