344 VEHICLE CARE
{Warning
An electric fan can start up even
when the engine is not running and
can injure you. Keep hands,
clothing, and tools away from any
underhood electric fan.
{Warning
Using a match near a battery can
cause battery gas to explode. People
have been hurt doing this, and
some have been blinded. Use a
flashlight if you need more light.
Battery fluid contains acid that can
burn you. Do not get it on you.
If you accidentally get it in your
eyes or on your skin, flush the place
with water and get medical help
immediately.
{Warning
Fans or other moving engine parts
can injure you badly. Keep your
hands away from moving parts
once the engine is running.
5. Connect one end of the red positive (+) cable to the remote
positive (+) terminal on the
discharged battery.
6. Connect the other end of the red positive (+) cable to the positive (+)
terminal of the good battery.
7. Connect one end of the black negative (–) cable to the
negative (–) terminal of the good
battery.
8. Connect the other end of the black negative (–) cable to the remote
negative (–) ground terminal on the
driver side shock tower for the
discharged battery.
9. Start the engine in the vehicle with the good battery and run the
engine at idle speed for at least
four minutes. 10. Try to start the vehicle that had
the dead battery. If it will not start
after a few tries, it probably needs
service.
Caution
If the jumper cables are connected
or removed in the wrong order,
electrical shorting may occur and
damage the vehicle. The repairs
would not be covered by the vehicle
warranty. Always connect and
remove the jumper cables in the
correct order, making sure that the
cables do not touch each other or
other metal.
Jumper Cable Removal
Reverse the sequence exactly when
removing the jumper cables.
After starting the disabled vehicle and
removing the jumper cables, allow it
to idle for several minutes.

{Warning
Do not bleach or dye seat belt
webbing. It may severely weaken
the webbing. In a crash, they might
not be able to provide adequate
protection. Clean and rinse seat belt
webbing only with mild soap and
lukewarm water. Allow the webbing
to dry.
Floor Mats
{Warning
If a floor mat is the wrong size or is
not properly installed, it can
interfere with the pedals.
Interference with the pedals can
cause unintended acceleration and/
or increased stopping distance
which can cause a crash and injury.
Make sure the floor mat does not
interfere with the pedals.
Use the following guidelines for
proper floor mat usage.
.The original equipment floor mats
were designed for your vehicle.
If the floor mats need replacing, it
is recommended that certified floor
mats be purchased. Non-certified
floor mats may not fit properly and
may interfere with the pedals.
Always check that the floor mats do
not interfere with the pedals.
.Do not use a floor mat if the vehicle
is not equipped with a floor mat
retainer on the driver side floor.
.Use the floor mat with the correct
side up. Do not turn it over.
.Do not place anything on top of the
driver side floor mat.
.Use only a single floor mat on the
driver side.
.Do not place one floor mat on top
of another.
Removing and Replacing the
Floor Mats
The driver and passenger side floor
mats are held in place by two
button-type retainers.
1. Pull up on the rear of the floor mat to unlock each retainer and
remove.
2. Reinstall by lining up the floor mat retainer openings over the carpet
retainers and pushing down to
snap into position.
3. Make sure the floor mat is properly secured in place. Verify the floor
mat does not interfere with the
pedals.

Cleaning Rubber Floor Mats
(All-Weather Mats and Floor
Liners)
{Warning
Do not use cleaners that contain
silicone, wax-based products,
or cleaners that increase gloss on
rubber floor mats/liners. These
cleaners can permanently change
the appearance and feel of the
rubber and can make the floor
mats/liners slippery. Your foot
could slip while operating the
vehicle, and you could lose control,
resulting in a crash. You or others
could be injured.
Use a soft cloth and/or a brush
dampened with water to remove dust
and loose dirt. For more thorough
cleaning, use a mild soap solution.

vehicles, maintenance needs vary.
There may need to be more frequent
checks and services. The Additional
Required Services - Normal are for
vehicles that:
.Carry passengers and cargo within
recommended limits on the Tire
and Loading Information label. See
Vehicle Load Limits0215.
.Are driven on reasonable road
surfaces within legal driving limits.
.Use the recommended fuel. See
Recommended Fuel 0267.
Refer to the information in the
Maintenance Schedule Additional
Required Services - Normal chart.
The Additional Required Services -
Severe are for vehicles that are:
.Mainly driven in heavy city traffic
in hot weather.
.Mainly driven in hilly or
mountainous terrain.
.Frequently towing a trailer.
.Used for high speed or competitive
driving.
.Used for taxi, police, or delivery
service.

Performing maintenance work can
be dangerous and can cause serious
injury. Perform maintenance work
only if the required information,
proper tools, and equipment are
available. If they are not, see your

Owner Checks and Services
Check the engine oil level. See Engine

Once a Month
.Check the tire inflation pressures.

.Inspect the tires for wear. See Tire

.Check the windshield washer fluid

Engine Oil Change
When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL
SOON message displays, have the
engine oil and filter changed within
the next 1 000 km/600 mi. If driven
under the best conditions, the engine
oil life system may not indicate the
need for vehicle service for up to a
year. The engine oil and filter must be
changed at least once a year and the
oil life system must be reset. Your
