Starter (choke) lever “ ”
Starting a cold engine requires a richer
air-fuel mixture, which is supplied by
the starter (choke).
Move the lever in direction (a) to turn on
the starter (choke).
Move the lever in direction (b) to turn
off the starter (choke).

Kickstarter
If the engine fails to start by pushing
the start switch, try to start it by using
the kickstarter. To start the engine, fold
out the kickstarter lever, move it down
lightly with your foot until the gears en-
gage, and then push it down smoothly
but forcefully.

To remove the seat
Remove the bolts, and then slide the
seat to the rear and pull upward.
To install the seat
1. Fit the slot in the seat onto the pro- jection on the fuel tank, and insert
the projection on the seat into the
seat holder as shown.
2. Place the seat in the original posi- tion, and then tighten the bolts.
TIP
Make sure that the seat is properly se-
cured before riding.

play and, if necessary, have a Yamaha
dealer adjust it.

Valve clearance
The valves are an important engine
component, and since valve clearance
changes with use, they must be
checked and adjusted at the intervals
specified in the periodic maintenance
chart. Unadjusted valves can result in
improper air-fuel mixture, engine
noise, and eventually engine damage.
To prevent this from occurring, have
your Yamaha dealer check and adjust
the valve clearance at regular intervals.

This service must be performed when

Although Yamaha motorcycles receive
a thorough inspection before shipment
from the factory, trouble may occur
during operation. Any problem in the
fuel, compression, or ignition systems,
for example, can cause poor starting
and loss of power.
The following troubleshooting chart
represents a quick and easy procedure
for checking these vital systems your-
self. However, should your motorcycle
require any repair, take it to a Yamaha
dealer, whose skilled technicians have
the necessary tools, experience, and
know-how to service the motorcycle
properly.
Use only genuine Yamaha replace-
ment parts. Imitation parts may look
like Yamaha parts, but they are often
inferior, have a shorter service life and
can lead to expensive repair bills.

Brake torque rod nut: 26 N·m (2.6 kgf·m, 19 lb·ft)

Locknut: 7 N·m (0.7 kgf·m, 5.2 lb·ft)
