Volvo's environmental activities are based on a holistic view, which means we consider theoverall environmental impact of a productthroughout its complete life cycle. In this con-text, design, production, product use, andrecycling are all important considerations. Inproduction, Volvo has partly or completelyphased out several chemicals including CFCs,lead chromates, asbestos, and cadmium; andreduced the number of chemicals used in ourplants 50% since 1991. Volvo was the first in the world to introduce into production a three-way catalytic converterwith a Lambda sond, now called the heatedoxygen sensor, in 1976. The current version ofthis highly efficient system reduces emissionsof harmful substances (CO, HC, NOx) from theexhaust pipe by approximately 95 - 99% andthe search to eliminate the remaining emis-sions continues. Volvo is the only automobilemanufacturer to offer CFC-free retrofit kits forthe air conditioning system of all models as farback as the 1975 model 240. Advanced elec-tronic engine controls and cleaner fuels arebringing us closer to our goal. In addition to continuous environmental refinement of con-ventional gasoline-powered internal combus-tion engines, Volvo is actively looking atadvanced technology alternative-fuel vehicles. When you drive a Volvo, you become our part- ner in the work to lessen the vehicle's impacton the environment. To reduce your vehicle'senvironmental impact, you can:
Maintain proper air pressure in your tires.Tests have shown decreased fuel econ-omy with improperly inflated tires.
Follow the recommended maintenanceschedule in your Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet.
Drive at a constant speed whenever possi-ble.
See a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician as soon as possible for inspec-tion if the check engine (malfunction indi-cator) light illuminates, or stays on afterthe vehicle has started.
Properly dispose of any vehicle-relatedwaste such as used motor oil, used batter-ies, brake pads, etc.
When cleaning your vehicle, please usegenuine Volvo car care products. All Volvocar care products are formulated to beenvironmentally friendly.

Activating and deactivating the air quality sensor *
The air quality sensor is part of the fully auto- mated Interior Air Quality System (IAQS).

Passenger compartment air filter
All air entering the passenger compartment through the climate control system intake isfiltered.
Replacing the passenger compartment filter
To maintain the high performance of the cli- mate control system, the filter must bereplaced regularly. Follow Volvo's serviceschedule for recommended replacement inter-vals. When driving in areas with a lot of smog,dust, etc., the filter may need to be changedmore frequently.
NOTE
There are two types of passenger compart- ment filters. Make sure that the correct fil-ter is installed.

Air distribution
The climate system distributes incoming air through a number of vents in the passengercompartment.
Automatic and manual air distributionWhen the auto-climate feature is on, air distri- bution is regulated automatically. Air distribu-tion can also be controlled manually.
Adjustable air ventsCertain air vents in the vehicle are adjustable,which means they can be opened/closed andthe direction of the air flow from the vent canbe adjusted.

Braking on salted roads
When driving on salted roads, a layer of salt may form on the brake discs and brake pads.
This could increase stopping distance. Main- tain an extra large safety distance to the vehi-cle ahead. Make sure to also:
Apply the brakes from time to time to helpremove salt. Make sure braking does notpose a risk to any other road users.
Gently apply the brakes when you havefinished driving and before driving again.

Maintenance of the brake system
Regularly check the brake system compo- nents for wear.
To keep the vehicle as safe and reliable as possible, follow the Volvo service schedulespecified in the Warranty and MaintenanceRecords Information booklet. After replacingbrake pads and brake discs, braking effect isnot adapted until they are "broken in" by driv-ing a few hundred kilometers (miles). Com-pensate for the reduced braking effect byapplying greater pressure to the brake pedal.Volvo recommends only using brake padsapproved for your Volvo.
CAUTION
The brake system's components should be regularly checked for wear. Contact a workshop for advice on how to do this or let a workshop perform theinspection - an authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.

Parking brake
The parking brake helps keep the vehicle sta- tionary by mechanically locking two wheels.
The parking brake controls are located in the tunnel console between the seats.
When the electric parking brake is being applied, a faint sound can be heard from thebrake's electric motor. This sound can also beheard during the automatic function check ofthe parking brake. If the vehicle is stationary when the parking brake is activated, it will only be applied to therear wheels. If it is activated while the vehicleis moving, the normal brakes will be used onall four wheels. Braking will be transferred toonly the rear wheels when the vehicle isalmost stopped.

This SiriusXM Travel Link service provides information about sporting events, tourna-ments, teams, leagues, etc.
From the SiriusXM Travel Link home screen, to display sports information:

A number of sports categories will be listed (Football, Baseball, Basketball, etc.) Tap a sport to select a league in that sport (NFL, MLB, etc.) or a sport organization (PGA,LPGA, etc.). The following is an example of the result of tapping Baseball :

Media player
The media player can play audio from the CD player * and from external audio sources con-
nected via USB port or Bluetooth. It can also play video format via the USB port.
When the vehicle is connected to the Internet, it is also possible to listen to web radio, audiobooks and to access music services via apps.
The media player is controlled from the center display. Sev-eral functions can also becontrolled using voice com-mands or the right-side steer-ing wheel keypad.

These services, which arelisted in the "Warranty and Service RecordsInformation" booklet, are not covered by thewarranty. You will be required to pay for laborand material used.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspections before it was delivered to you, in accordancewith Volvo specifications. The maintenanceprocedures outlined in the Warranty and Serv-ice Records Information booklet, many ofwhich will positively affect your vehicle's emis-sions, should be performed as indicated. It isrecommended that receipts for vehicle emis-sion maintenance be retained in case ques-tions arise concerning maintenance. Inspec-tion and maintenance should also be per-formed anytime a malfunction is observed orsuspected.

Periodic maintenance helps minimize emissions
NOTE
Refer to your Service and Warranty Booklet for a comprehensive serviceand maintenance schedule up to240,000 km (150,000 miles). Thisprogram contains inspections and ser-vices necessary for the proper functionof your vehicle and includes compo-nents that affect vehicle emissions.

On-board Diagnostic SystemOBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. It stores diag-nostic information about your vehicle's emis-sion controls. It can light the Check Enginelight (MIL) if it detects an emission control"fault." A "fault" is a component or systemthat is not performing within an expectedrange. A fault may be permanent or temporary.OBD II will store a message about any fault.

Many states connect a computer directly to a vehicle's OBD II system. The inspector canthen read "faults." In some states, this type ofinspection has replaced the tailpipe emissiontest.
How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission
inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspec- tion for any of the following reasons: If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, your vehicle may fail inspection.
If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit,but went out without any action on yourpart, OBD II will still have a recorded fault.Your vehicle may pass or fail, dependingon the inspection practices in your area.
If you had recent service that required dis-connecting the battery, OBD II diagnosticinformation may be incomplete and "notready" for inspection. A vehicle that is notready may fail inspection.
How can I prepare for my next
OBD II
emission inspection?
If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit or was lit but went out without service, have your vehicle diagnosed and, if necessary,serviced by a qualified Volvo technician.
If you recently had service for a lit CheckEngine light, or if you had service thatrequired disconnecting the battery, aperiod of driving is necessary to bring theOBD II system to "ready" for inspection.Two half-hour trips of mixed stop-and-go/highway driving are typically needed toallow OBD II to reach readiness. YourVolvo retailer can provide you with moreinformation on planning a trip.
Maintain your vehicle in accordance withyour vehicle's maintenance schedule.
Owner maintenancePeriodic maintenance requirements and inter-vals are described in your vehicle's Warrantyand Service Records Information booklet. The following points can be carried out between the normally scheduled maintenanceservices.
Each time the vehicle is refueled:
Check the engine oil level.
Clean the windshield, windshield wipers, headlights, and taillights.

Data downloading can affect other services such as transfer data, e.g. web radio. If theaffect on other services is experienced asproblematic, the download can be interrup-ted. Alternatively, it may be appropriate toswitch off or cancel other services.

An update can be interrupted when the ignition is switched off and the vehicle isleft. However, the update does not have to be completed before the vehicle is left as theupdate is resumed the next time the vehi-cle is used.
