Park Assist front, rear and sides *
Park Assist behaves differently depending on which part of the vehicle is approaching anobstacle.
Front camera
The warning signal has a continuous tone when the obstacle is less than approx. 30 cm (1 ft) from thevehicle.
The Park Assist system's front sensors are automatically activated when the engine isstarted. They are active at speedsbelow 10 km/h (6 mph). The distance monitored extends approx. 80 cm (2.5 ft) in front of the vehicle.
NOTE
The Park Assist system is deactivated when the parking brake is used or when P
is selected on vehicles with automatictransmission.
CAUTION
When installing auxiliary lights: Make sure these do not obscure the sensors – theauxiliary lights could be perceived as anobstacle.
Back
The warning signal has a continuous tone when the obstacle is less than approx. 30 cm (1 ft) from thevehicle.
The rear sensors will be activated if the vehicle begins rolling backward or if reverse gear isengaged. The distance monitored extends approx. 1.5 meters (5 ft) behind the vehicle.
Side sensors
The warning signal will begin pulsating rapidly when the obstacle is less than approx. 25 cm (0.8 ft) fromthe vehicle.
Park Assist's side sensors are automatically activated when the engine is started. They areactive at speeds below 10 km/h (6 mph). The distance monitored is approx. 25 cm (0.8 ft) out from the sides. The detection area of the side sensors increa- ses significantly, however, when the steering angle of the front wheel increases and depending on the position of the steeringwheel, obstacles up to approx. 90 cm (3 ft)

Ignition modes The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functionsavailable.
To enable the use of a limited number of func- tions when the engine is not running, the igni-tion can be put in one of three different levels:0, I and II. These levels are referred to as "igni-
tion modes" in the Owner's Manual. The following table shows which functions are available in each ignition mode:

If the warning symbols for both brake fault and ABS fault are lit simultaneously, theremay be a fault in the brake system.
If the brake fluid reservoir level is nor- mal when this occurs, drive carefully tothe nearest workshop to have thebrake system checked - an authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended.
If the brake fluid has fallen below theMIN
level in the brake fluid reservoir,
the vehicle should not be driven untilthe brake fluid has been filled. The rea-son for the brake fluid loss must bechecked.

Brake Assist System The brake enhancing system, (BAS 3
), helps
increase braking force and can thereby reduce braking distance.
The system monitors the driver's braking hab- its and increases braking force when neces-sary. Braking force can be increased up to thepoint at which the ABS intervenes. The func-tion is deactivated when pressure on the brakepedal is decreased.
NOTE
When BAS is activated, the brake pedal will go down slightly more than usual.Press (hold) down the brake pedal as longas necessary. When the brake pedal is released, all brak- ing ceases.

Braking on wet roads
Prolonged driving in heavy rain without brak- ing may cause braking effect to be slightlydelayed the first time the brakes are applied.
This may also occur after washing the vehicle. It will then be necessary to apply greater pres-sure to the brake pedal. You should thereforemaintain a greater distance to the vehicleahead. Firmly apply the brakes after washing the vehicle or driving on wet roads. This helpswarm up the brake discs, enabling them to drymore quickly and protecting them against cor-rosion. Consider the current traffic situationwhen braking.

WARNING
Never turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving, e.g. when driving downhill. Thisdeactivates certain important systemssuch as power steering and brakes.
Other factors that decrease fuel consumption
Dirty air cleaner.
Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter.
Incorrect front-end alignment.
Incorrect wheel alignment.
Some of the above items and others are checked as part of Volvo's standard mainte-nance schedule.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems and equipment checked carefully before driv-ing long distances.
Check that
the engine is running properly and that fuel consumption is normal
there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
the brake pedal is functioning properly
all lights are working
‒ adjust the head-
light height if the vehicle is carrying aheavy load
tire tread depth and air pressure are atcorrect levels. Change to snow tires whendriving in areas where there is a risk ofsnowy or icy roads
the start battery is sufficiently charged
the wiper blades are in good condition

Winter driving
It is important to check the vehicle before driving in cold/snowy conditions to makesure it can be driven safely.
Before the cold season arrives: Make sure the engine coolant contains 50% antifreeze. This mixture helps pro-tect the engine from frost erosion down toapprox. –35 °C (–31 °F). Do not mix dif-ferent types of antifreeze as this couldpose a health risk.
Keep the fuel tank well filled to preventcondensation from forming.
Check the viscosity of the engine oil. Oilwith low viscosity (thinner oil) improvescold-weather starting and reduces fuelconsumption when driving with a coldengine.
CAUTION
Low-viscosity oil should not be used with hard driving or in hot weather.
Check the condition and charge level of the start battery. Cold weather placesgreater demands on the start battery andreduces its capacity.
Use washer fluid containing antifreeze tohelp prevent ice from forming in thewasher fluid reservoir.

Emission controls
Three-way catalytic converter
Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particularly involvingthe electrical, fuel or distributor ignitionsystems, may cause unusually high three-way catalytic converter temperatures. Donot continue to operate your vehicle if youdetect engine misfire, noticeable loss ofpower or other unusual operating condi-tions, such as engine overheating or back-firing. A properly tuned engine will helpavoid malfunctions that could damage thethree-way catalytic converter.
Do not park your vehicle over combustiblematerials, such as grass or leaves, whichcan come into contact with the hotexhaust system and cause such materialsto ignite under certain wind and weatherconditions.
Excessive starter cranking (in excess ofone minute), or an intermittently firing orflooded engine can cause three-way cata-lytic converter or exhaust system over-heating.
Remember that tampering or unauthor-ized modifications to the engine, theEngine Control Module, or the vehicle maybe illegal and can cause three-way cata-lytic converter or exhaust system over-heating. This includes: altering fuel injec- tion settings or components, alteringemission system components or locationor removing components, and/or repeateduse of leaded fuel.
NOTE
Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic converters.
Heated oxygen sensorsThe heated oxygen sensors monitor the oxy- gen content of the exhaust gases. Readings are fed into a control module that continuouslymonitors engine functions and controls fuelinjection. The ratio of fuel to air into the engineis continuously adjusted for efficient combus-tion to help reduce harmful emissions.

Overheating of engine and transmission
In certain driving conditions, such as driving in mountainous areas or hot weather, there isa risk of the engine or transmission overheat-ing, especially when carrying heavy loads.
Engine power may be temporarily limited.
Remove any auxiliary lights mounted in front of the grille when driving in hotweather.
If the temperature in the engine's coolingsystem becomes too high, a warning sym-bol will appear in the instrument panel along with the message

Replacing bulbs
Bulb types vary depending on model and equipment level. If a light bulb 15
breaks, it can
be replaced by following the procedure shown in the Owner's Manual. If you are experiencing problems with any lights other than light bulbs, contact a work- shop 16
.
If there is a problem with an LED 17
light, the
entire lamp unit will normally need to be replaced.
NOTE
For information on lights not mentioned in the Owner's Manual, contact a Volvodealer or a certified Volvo service techni-cian.
WARNING
The vehicle electrical system must be in ignition mode 0 when bulbs are replaced.
CAUTION
Never touch the bulb glass with your bare fingers. Grease and oils from your fingersvaporize in the heat and will leave adeposit on the reflector, which may dam-age it.
NOTE
If the error message persists after the defective bulb has been replaced, we rec-ommend a visit to an authorized Volvoworkshop.
NOTE
Exterior lighting such as headlights and taillights may develop temporary conden-sation on the inside of the lens. This is nor-mal. All exterior lighting is designed toresist this. Condensation is normally ven-ted out of the lamp housing once the lighthas been lit for some period of time.
NOTE
Bulbs for active curve lighting * contain
traces of mercury and should therefore always be submitted to a certified Volvoservice technician.

Wash using a sponge, car washing deter- gent and plenty of lukewarm water.
Clean the wiper blades with lukewarmsoap solution or car washing detergent.
Dry the vehicle using a clean, soft chamoisor a squeegee. Try not to let drops ofwater dry in strong sunlight. This couldcause water drying stains that may needto be polished out.
In areas with heavy industrial emissions,more frequent washing of the vehicle'sexterior is recommended.
Tar spots from asphalt may remain evenafter washing. Use a tar remover toremove these spots.
WARNING
Always entrust engine washing to a work- shop. If the engine is hot, there is a risk offire.
CAUTION
Dirty headlights do not work as well. Clean them regularly, e.g. when refueling. Do not use corrosive cleaners. Use water and a non-abrasive sponge.
NOTE
