Charging status in the charging cable's charging module
The red and blue lights in the charging mod- ule indicate the status of ongoing and com-pleted charging.
Charge module: 1. Red warning light, 2. Blue status indicator
When the charge module is initially plugged into a wall outlet, the red warning light willflash once to indicate that a startup safetycheck has been performed. When the safetycheck has been completed, the blue statusindicator will glow steadily and the red warn-ing light will be off. The charger is now readyto be used. If the red warning light continuesto flash or glows steadily, a fault has beendetected and the charger will not deliverpower to the vehicle. Contact a Volvo retaileror a certified Volvo service technician. When the charging cable is connected to thevehicle's charging socket, the blue light willflash once. Selecting ignition mode
The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functionsavailable.
Selecting an ignition mode
Start knob in the tunnel console.
Ignition mode 0
– Unlock the vehicle and
keep the remote key in the passenger compartment.
NOTE
To set level I or II without engine start –
do not depress the brake pedal (or clutch
pedal for vehicles with manual transmis- sion) when selecting this ignition mode.
Ignition mode I
– Turn the start knob
clockwise and release it. The control will automatically return to the original posi- tion.
Ignition mode II
– Turn the start knob
clockwise and hold it there forapprox. 5 seconds. Release the knob,which will automatically return to its origi-nal position.
Back to ignition mode 0
– To return to

Brake functions
The vehicle's brakes are used to reduce speed or prevent the vehicle from rolling.
In addition to the wheel brakes and parking brakes, the vehicle is also equipped with anumber of automatic brake assist functions.These systems provide assistance by e.g. thedriver not needing to depress the brake pedalat a traffic light or when starting up a hill. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the following brake assist functions may beincluded:

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle's regular brakes, which are part of the brakesystem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake cir- cuits. If one brake circuit is damaged, thebrake pedal will go down further whendepressed. More pressure will then berequired from the driver for normal brakingeffect.
WARNING
The power brakes only work when the electric motor or combustion engine is run-ning.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine is switched off, greater pressure must be appliedto brake the vehicle. In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavy load, gear position B can be used to augment
the brakes with engine braking.
Anti-lock brakesThe vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS 2
), which helps prevent
the wheels from locking and helps maintain steering control when braking. Vibrations maybe felt from the brake pedal when ABS isoperating, which is normal. After the vehicle is started, a brief test of theABS system is automatically performed whenthe driver releases the brake pedal. An addi-tional automatic test of the system may beperformed when the vehicle is traveling at alow speed. During the test, the brake pedalmay feel as though it is pulsating.
Light braking charges the hybrid
battery
When the brakes are applied lightly, the elec-tric motor braking function is used. This con-verts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricalenergy, which is used to charge the hybridbattery. When the battery is being chargedwith the electric motor braking function, thiswill be indicated in the instrument panel.

If the warning symbols for both brake fault and ABS fault are lit simultaneously, theremay be a fault in the brake system.
If the brake fluid reservoir level is nor- mal when this occurs, drive carefully tothe nearest workshop to have thebrake system checked - an authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended.
If the brake fluid has fallen below theMIN
level in the brake fluid reservoir,
the vehicle should not be driven untilthe brake fluid has been filled. The rea-son for the brake fluid loss must bechecked.

Brake Assist System The brake enhancing system, (BAS 3
), helps
increase braking force and can thereby reduce braking distance.
The system monitors the driver's braking hab- its and increases braking force when neces-sary. Braking force can be increased up to thepoint at which the ABS intervenes. The func-tion is deactivated when pressure on the brakepedal is decreased.

Braking on wet roads
Prolonged driving in heavy rain without brak- ing may cause braking effect to be slightlydelayed the first time the brakes are applied.
This may also occur after washing the vehicle. It will then be necessary to apply greater pres-sure to the brake pedal. You should thereforemaintain a greater distance to the vehicleahead. Firmly apply the brakes after washing the vehicle or driving on wet roads. This helpswarm up the brake discs, enabling them to drymore quickly and protecting them against cor-rosion. Consider the current traffic situationwhen braking.

Do not leave the vehicle in an unventilated area with a drive mode activated and thecombustion engine switched off. Theengine will start automatically if the chargelevel in the hybrid battery is low and theresulting exhaust gases can be very harm-ful to people and animals.
Hybrid
This is the default mode in which the elec- tric motor and combustion engine worktogether.
The vehicle starts in
Hybrid mode. The control
system uses both the electric motor and the gasoline engine – separately or in tandem –and adapts utilization with regard to perform-ance, fuel consumption and comfort. Drivingcapacity on the electric motor alone is deter-mined by factors such as the hybrid battery'scharge level, the need for heat or cooling inthe passenger compartment, etc. If there is sufficient charge in the battery, it is possible to drive solely on electric power.When the accelerator pedal is pressed, onlythe electric motor will be activated until thebattery reaches a certain charge level. Abovethis level, the current in the battery cannotsupply the power requested by the acceleratorpedal and the combustion engine will start. When the hybrid battery's charge level is low, the combustion engine will start more fre- quently to save the remaining current in thebattery. Charge the hybrid battery from a120-240 volt outlet using a charging cable, or activate
Charge in Function view to reset the
option of only using the electric motor. This drive mode is designed for low energy consumption with a mix between the electricmotor and gasoline engine, without compro-mising on climate comfort or driving experi-ence. When faster acceleration is requestedby the driver, the electric driveline will be uti-lized to help provide maximum additionalpower. The vehicle also monitors the driving condi- tions and automatically engages all-wheeldrive if necessary. All-wheel drive and extraelectric power are always available regardlessof the battery's charging status.
Information in the instrument panel
When driving in Hybrid mode, a hybrid gauge will be displayed in the instrument panel. Thegauge will indicate the amount of electricalcurrent required when the driver depressesthe accelerator pedal. The marker between thelightning and the drop shows how much cur-rent is available.
The instrument panel gauge when both the electric motor and the combustion engine are being used.
The instrument panel also shows how much current is being restoredto the battery (regenerated) duringlight braking.

Overheating of engine and transmission
In certain driving conditions, such as driving in mountainous areas or hot weather, there isa risk of the engine or transmission overheat-ing, especially when carrying heavy loads.
Engine power may be temporarily limited.
Remove any auxiliary lights mounted in front of the grille when driving in hotweather.
If the temperature in the engine's coolingsystem becomes too high, a warning sym-bol will appear in the instrument panel along with the message

After a prolonged period of driving indemanding conditions, do not turn off theengine immediately after stopping.
NOTE
It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to operate for a short time after the engine isswitched off.

1. Put the ignition in mode
0.
2. Make sure the auxiliary battery (the bat- tery used to jump start the discharged battery) has a voltage of 12 volts.
3. If the auxiliary battery is in another vehicle, turn off that vehicle's engine and makesure that the vehicles are not touchingeach other.
4. Clamp the red jumper cable onto the auxil- iary battery's positive (+) terminal (1).
CAUTION
Connect the jump cable carefully to pre- vent short circuits with other componentsin the engine compartment.
5. Fold back the cover over your vehicle'spositive (+) jump start terminal (2).
6. Clamp the other end of the red jumper cable to your vehicle's positive (+) jump start terminal (2).
7. Clamp the black jumper cable onto the auxiliary battery's negative (-) terminal (3).
8. Clamp the other end of the black jumper cable to your vehicle's negative (-) groundpoint (4). 9. Make sure the jumper cables are securely
attached to help prevent sparks whilejump starting.
10. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and let it run for a few minutes at a higheridling speed than normal, about1500 rpm.
11. Start your vehicle's engine. If the engine does not start, allow an additional 10minutes of charging time and then try tostart the engine again.
NOTE
When the engine is started under normal conditions, the vehicle's electrical drivemotor is prioritized – the gasoline engineremains off. This means that after the startknob has been turned clockwise, the elec-tric motor has "started" and the vehicle isready to be driven. Start of the electricmotor is indicated by the indicator lights onthe instrument panel going out and its pre-selected theme illuminating.
CAUTION
Do not touch the connections between the cable and the vehicle during the startattempt. Risk of sparking.
12. Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder ‒ first the black cables and then the
red cables. Make sure that none of the clamps of the black jumper cables come into contactwith either vehicle's positive (+) jump startterminals or either of the red jumpercable's connected clamps.

CAUTION
Bumper-attached trailer hitches must not be used on Volvos, nor shouldsafety chains be attached to thebumper.
Trailer hitches attaching to the vehiclerear axle must not be used.
Never connect a trailer's hydraulicbrake system directly to the vehiclebrake system, nor a trailer's lightingsystem directly to the vehicle lightingsystem. Consult your nearest author-ized Volvo retailer for correct installa-tion.
When towing a trailer, the trailer'ssafety chains or wire must be correctlyfastened to the attachment points pro-vided in the trailer hitch on the vehicle.The safety chain or wire must never befastened to or wound around the tow-ing ball.
NOTE
The optional detachable trailer hitch may not be available in all markets or on allmodels. Consult your Volvo retailer.
NOTE
Extreme weather conditions, towing a trailer, high altitude and lower fuel gradethan recommended are factors that cansignificantly increase the vehicle's fuel con-sumption.
Trailer weights
WARNING
Please adhere to the recommendations provided for trailer weight. If the recom-mendations are not followed, the vehicleand trailer may be difficult to control duringevasive maneuvers and braking.
NOTE
The specified maximum trailer weights are those permitted by Volvo. National vehicleregulations may set additional restrictionson trailer weight and speed. The trailerhitches may be certified for higher towingweights than the vehicle is permitted totow.
Self-leveling suspension
*The vehicle's self-leveling system attempts to keep the vehicle at a constant level, regardlessof load (up to the maximum permitted weight).When the vehicle is stationary, the rear end of the vehicle will be slightly lowered, which isnormal.
Driving in hilly terrain or hot weatherIn certain conditions, there is a risk of over-heating when driving with a trailer. If overheat-ing of the engine and drive system is detected,a warning symbol will illuminate in the instru-ment panel and a message will appear. The automatic transmission selects the opti- mal gear for the current load and enginespeed.
Steep inclines
Do not lock the automatic transmission into a higher gear than what the engine can handle
‒
it is not always preferable to drive in highgears at low rpm.
Parking on a hill
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Put the gear selector in P.
4. Release the brake pedal.Put chocks behind the wheels when the vehi- cle is parked on a hill with a trailer attached.
Starting on a hill
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Put the gear selector in D.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Release the brake pedal and start driving.
