NOTE
Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive calledmethyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tricar-bonyl (MMT). If such fuels are used, yourEmission Control System performancemay be affected, and the Check EngineLight (malfunction indicator light) locatedon your instrument panel may light. If thisoccurs, please return your vehicle to atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian for service.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers, "Oxygenated fuels"
Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local lawsrequire that the service pump be marked indi-cating use of alcohols or ethers. However,there are areas in which the pumps areunmarked. If you are not sure whether there isalcohol or ethers in the gasoline you buy,check with the service station operator. To
meet seasonal air quality standards, someareas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel. Volvo permits the use of the following "oxy- genated" fuels. However, the specified octaneratings must still be met.
Alcohol - Ethanol
Fuels containing up to 10% ethanol by volume may be used. Ethanol may also be referred toas Ethyl alcohol, or "Gasohol". Ethers - MTBE/ETBE: Fuels containing up to 22% MTBE/ETBE by volume may be used.
MethanolDo not use gasolines containing methanol(methyl alcohol, wood alcohol). This practicecan result in vehicle performance deteriorationand can damage critical parts in the fuel sys-tem. Such damage may not be covered underthe New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Trailer Stability Assist (TSA 11
) is a function
designed to help stabilize a vehicle that is towing a trailer when the vehicle and trailerhave begun to sway. The function is part of the Electronic Stability Control system ESC 12
.
Reasons for swayingA vehicle towing a trailer may begin to sway for various reasons. Normally this only occursat high speeds. However, if the trailer is over-loaded or unevenly distributed, e.g. too farback, there is a risk of swaying even at lowspeeds. Swaying may be caused by factors such as:
The vehicle and trailer are hit by a sudden, strong crosswind.
The vehicle and trailer are traveling on anuneven road or over a bump.
Sudden movements of the steering wheel.
Once swaying has begun, it can be difficult orimpossible to stop it. This makes the vehicleand trailer difficult to control and there is a riskof swerving into oncoming traffic or driving offthe road.
Trailer Stability Assist functionTrailer Stability Assist continuously monitorsthe vehicle's movements, particularly lateral movements. If swaying is detected, the brakesare applied individually on the front wheels,which has a stabilizing effect on the vehicleand trailer. This is often enough to enable thedriver to regain control of the vehicle. If the Trailer Stability Assist function's first attempt is not adequate to stop the swayingmotion, the brakes are applied on all wheelsand engine power is temporarily reduced. Asthe swaying motion begins to decrease andthe vehicle and trailer have once againbecome stable, TSA stops regulating thebrakes/engine power and the driver regainscontrol of the vehicle.
NOTE
Trailer Stability Assist is deactivated if the driver selects the sport mode by deactivat- ing
ESC in the center display's menu sys-
tem.
Trailer Stability Assist may not intervene if the driver tries to compensate for the swayingmotion by moving the steering wheel rapidly,because the system will then not be able todetermine if it is the trailer or the driver caus-ing the swaying.

Checking trailer lights *
Automatic check
When the trailer has been connected to the vehicle's electrical system, its lights can bechecked by automatically activating them.This function helps the driver check that thetrailer's lights are functioning correctly beforestarting to drive. In order to perform this check, the vehicle must be switched off.
1. When a trailer is connected to the towbar,
the message
Automatic Trailer Lamp
Check will appear in the instrument panel.
2. Acknowledge the message by pressing the O button on the right-side steering
wheel keypad.
> The light check will begin.
3. Get out of the vehicle to perform the check.
> All of the lights on the trailer will beginflashing, and then illuminate separately one at a time.
4. Visually check that all of the trailer's lights are functioning correctly.
5. After a short time, all of the trailer's lights will start flashing again.
> The light check is completed.
Disabling the automatic check
The automatic light check can be disabled in the center display. 1.Tap

Towing using a towline
This section refers to one vehicle being towed behind another using a towline.
Never attempt to tow a Twin Engine vehicle behind another vehicle as this could damagethe electric motor. The vehicle must instead belifted onto a tow truck and transported with allfour wheels on the bed or lifting platform ofthe truck (no wheels may touch the road).
Towing another vehicleTowing another vehicle requires a lot of power - use the Constant AWD drive mode. This
helps charge the hybrid battery and improve the vehicle's driving and roadholding characte-ristics. Before towing another vehicle, check applica- ble speed limit regulations.
Jump startingNever attempt to tow the vehicle to start theengine, as this could damage the electricmotor. Use an auxiliary battery if the start bat-tery's charge level is so low that the enginecannot be started.
CAUTION
Attempts to tow-start the vehicle could cause damage to the electrical drive motorand three-way catalytic converter.

The temporary tire sealing system can be used to seal a puncture in a tire or to checkand adjust the pressure in the tire. Models equipped with a spare wheel 15
do not
have the tire sealing system.

The tire sealing system consists of a compres- sor and a bottle containing sealing compound.The sealing functions as a temporary repair.
NOTE
The sealing compound effectively seals tires with punctures in the tread but maynot be able to fully seal tires with punctu-res in the sidewall. Do not use the tire seal-ing system on tires with large tears, cracksor similar damage.
NOTE
The compressor is intended for temporary tire sealing and is approved by Volvo.
LocationThe tire sealing system is located in a foam block under the floor of the trunk.
Sealing compound expiration dateThe sealing compound bottle must be replaced if its expiration date has passed (seethe decal on the bottle). Handle the old bottleas hazardous waste.

16. Check the inflation pressure on the air
pressure gauge.
If the pressure is under 1.3 bar (19 psi), the tire is not sufficiently sealed. Thevehicle should not be driven. Call road-side assistance to have the vehicletowed.
If the inflation pressure is higher than1.3 bar (19 psi), the tire must be inflatedto the inflation pressure specified onthe tire pressure decal on the driver'sside door pillar (1 bar = 100 kPa =14.5 psi). If the inflation pressure is toohigh, use the air release valve to releaseair.
WARNING
Check inflation pressure regularly.
Volvo recommends driving to the nearest authorized Volvo workshop to have the tirereplaced/repaired. Inform the workshop thatthe tire contains sealing compound. The sealing compound bottle and the hose must be replaced after use. Volvo recom-mends contacting an authorized Volvo work-shop for replacement.
WARNING
After using the tire sealing system, the vehicle should not be driven farther thanapproximately 200 km (120 miles).
NOTE
The compressor is an electric device. Fol- low local regulations for disposal.

The vehicle's original tires can be inflated using the compressor in the tire sealing sys-tem.
1. The compressor must be switched off. Make sure that the switch is in the 0 (Off)
position and take out the electrical cable and the hose.
2. Unscrew the tire's valve cap and screw the hose's valve connector as far as possi-ble onto the valve. Be sure the air release valve on the com- pressor's hose is completely closed.
3. Connect the electrical cable to the nearest 12 V outlet and start the vehicle.
WARNING
Inhaling exhaust fumes could lead to seri- ous injury. Never leave the engine runningin an enclosed space or a space withoutsufficient ventilation.
WARNING
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle while the engine is running.

In a head-on collision at a speed of 50 km/h (30 mph), an unsecured objectweighing 20 kg (44 pounds) can reach aprojectile weight equivalent to 1000 kg(2200 pounds).

If objects are loaded higher than the upper edge of the side windows, leave a 10 cm(4 in.) space between the objects and thewindow. Objects placed closer to thiscould impede the function of the inflatablecurtain concealed inside the headlining.

Always secure the load. Otherwise, it may shift during heavy braking and injure peo-ple in the vehicle. Cover sharp edges and sharp corners with something soft. Turn off the engine and apply the parking brake when loading/unloading longobjects. Otherwise, it is possible for theload to reach the gear lever or gear selectorand move it to a drive position – whichcould cause the vehicle to begin rolling.
Extra cargo space
The rear seat backrests can be folded down *

Volvo-developed load carriers are recom- mended for carrying loads on the roof of thevehicle.
Volvo load carriers are specially designed to help prevent damage to your vehicle and helpensure maximum safety while driving. Volvoload carriers are available from authorizedVolvo retailers. Carefully follow the installation instructions provided with the load carriers. Distribute the load evenly throughout the load carriers. Place heavier cargo at thebottom of the load.
Check periodically to ensure that the loadcarriers and load are properly secured.Secure the load firmly using tie straps orsimilar.
If the load is longer than the vehicle, suchas a canoe or kayak, attach the towingeyelet in its front outlet and secure the tiestraps in it.
The vehicle's wind resistance and fuelconsumption increase with the size of theload.
Drive smoothly. Avoid rapid acceleration,hard braking and fast cornering.

On-board Diagnostic SystemOBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. It stores diag-nostic information about your vehicle's emis-sion controls. It can light the Check Enginelight (MIL) if it detects an emission control"fault." A "fault" is a component or systemthat is not performing within an expectedrange. A fault may be permanent or temporary.OBD II will store a message about any fault.

How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission
inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspec- tion for any of the following reasons: If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, your vehicle may fail inspection.
If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit,but went out without any action on yourpart, OBD II will still have a recorded fault.Your vehicle may pass or fail, dependingon the inspection practices in your area.
If you had recent service that required dis-connecting the battery, OBD II diagnosticinformation may be incomplete and "notready" for inspection. A vehicle that is notready may fail inspection.
