When Driving
If the selector lever will not move from P using the proper shift proce-
dure, continue to hold down the brake pedal.
Remove the shift-lock override
cover using a cloth-wrapped flat
head screwdriver.
Insert a screwdriver and push it
down.
Press and hold the lock-release
button.
Move the selector lever.
Take the vehicle to your Toyota dealer to have the system check ed.
The manual shift mode gives you the feel of driving a manual tran-
saxle vehicle by allowing you to operate the selector lever man ually.
This allows you to control engine rpm and torque to the drive w heels
much like a manual transaxle when more control is desired.
To change to manual shift mode,
shift the lever from D to M.
To return to automatic shift mo de, shift the lever from M to D.

3-6. ABS/TCS/DSC
Traction Control System (TCS)
The warning light turns on when the system has a malfunction.
Refer to Contact Your Toyota Dealer and Have Vehicle Inspected on
P. 493.
To turn off the TCS, press the DSC OFF switch ( P. 219).
The Traction Control System (TCS) enhances traction and safety
by controlling engine torque and braking. W hen the TCS detects
driving wheel slippage, it lower s engine torque and operates th e
brakes to prevent loss of traction.
This means that on a slick surface , the engine adjusts automati-
cally to provide optimum power to the drive wheels, limiting
wheel spin and loss of traction.
WARNING
■ Do not rely on the Traction Cont rol System (TCS) as a substitute for
safe driving
The Traction Control System (TCS) cannot compensate for unsafe and
reckless driving, excessive speed, tailgating (following anothe r vehicle too
closely), and hydroplaning (reduced tire friction and road contact because
of water on the road surface). You can still have an accident.
■ Use snow tires or tire chains and drive at reduced speeds when roads
are covered with ice and/or snow
Driving without proper traction devices on snow and/or ice-cove red roads is
dangerous. The Traction Control System (TCS) alone cannot provide ade-
quate traction and you could still have an accident.

3-6. ABS/TCS/DSC
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
DSC operation is possible at speeds greater than 12 mph (20 km/h).
The warning light turns on when the system has a malfunction.
Refer to Contact Your Toyota Dealer and Have Vehicle Inspected on
P. 493.
The Dynamic Stability Control ( DSC) automatically controls
braking and engine torque in c onjunction with systems such as
ABS and TCS to help control si de slip when driving on slippery
surfaces, or during sudden or e vasive maneuvering, enhancing
vehicle safety.
Refer to ABS ( P. 215) and TCS ( P. 216).
WARNING
■Do not rely on the Dynamic Stabil ity Control as a substitute for safe
driving
The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) cannot compensate for unsaf e and
reckless driving, excessive speed, tailgating (following anothe r vehicle too
closely), and hydroplaning (reduced tire friction and road contact because
of water on the road surface). You can still have an accident.
NOTICE
● The DSC may not operate correctly unless the following are obse rved:
• Use tires of the correct size specified for your Toyota on all 4 wheels.
• Use tires of the same manufacturer, brand and tread pattern on all 4 wheels.
• Do not mix worn tires.
● The DSC may not operate correctly when tire chains are used or a tempo-
rary spare tire is installed because the tire diameter changes.

If Trouble Arises
If your Toyota is equipped with the optional antitheft wheel lug nuts, a
special key must be used to unlock the locking lug nut for each wheel.
The key is stored in the glove compartment, center console stor age,
storage box, or trunk. Register the key and lug nuts with the l ock man-
ufacturer by filling out the r egistration card and mailing it i n using the
accompanying envelope. If the ke y is lost, consult your Toyota dealer
or use the lock manufacturer’s order form to order a new key. A ntitheft
wheel lug nuts cannot be installed on a steel wheel spare tire. When
installing a temporary spare tire, use one of the original lug nuts in
place of the locking lug nut. The original lug nuts are stored inside
your Toyota.

■To remove an antitheft lug nutObtain the special key for the antitheft lug nut.
Place the special key on top of the antitheft lug nut, and be s ure
to hold the key square to it. If you hold the key at an angle, you
may damage both key and nut. Do not use a power impact
wrench.
Place the lug wrench on top of the key and apply pressure. Turn
the wrench coun terclockwise.

WARNING
■Make sure the mounting surfaces of the wheel, hub and lug nuts
are clean before changing or replacing tires
When changing or replacing a tire , not removing dirt and grime from the
mounting surfaces of the wheel, hub and hub bolts is dangerous. The
lug nuts could loosen while driving and cause the tire to come off, result-
ing in an accident.
■Do not apply oil or grease to lug nuts and bolts and do not tig hten
the lug nuts beyond the r ecommended tightening torque
Applying oil or grease to lug nuts and bolts is dangerous. The lug nuts
could loosen while dri ving and cause the tire to come off, resulting in an
accident. In addition, lug nuts and bolts could be damaged if t ightened
more than necessary.
■Always securely and correctly tighten the lug nuts
Improperly or loosely tightened lug nuts are dangerous. The whe el
could wobble or come off. This could result in loss of vehicle control and
cause a serious accident.
■Be sure to reinstall the same nuts you removed or replace them
with metric nuts of the same configuration
Because the wheel studs and lug nuts on your Toyota have metric
threads, using a non-metric nut is dangerous. On a metric stud, it would
not secure the wheel and would damage the stud, which could cau se
the wheel to slip off and cause an accident.
■Do not drive with any tires th at have incorrect air pressure
Driving on tires with incorrect air pressure is dangerous. Tire s with
incorrect pressure could affect handling and result in an accid ent. When
you check the regular tires’ air pressure, check the spare tire , too.

■Lug nut tightening torque
When installing a tire, tighten the lug nut to the following torque.
80-108 ft
•lbf (108-147 N•m, 12-14 kgf•m)
The tires have been optimally matched with the chassis of your vehicle.
When replacing tires, Toyota recommends that you replace tires of the
same type originally fitted to your vehicle. For details, conta ct your Toyota
dealer.
