●The keyless entry system operation may vary due to local conditions.
● The keyless entry system is fully operational (door/liftgate lo ck/unlock) when
the ignition is switched off. The system does not operate if th e ignition is
switched to any position other than off.
● If the key does not operate when pressing a button or the opera tional range
becomes too small, the battery may be dead. To install a new ba ttery, refer
to Key Battery Replacement ( P. 410).
● Additional keys can be obtained at your Toyota dealer. Up to 6 keys can be
used with the keyless functions per vehicle. Bring all keys to your Toyota
dealer when additional keys are required.
Operation indicator light
Operation buttons
The operation indicator light
flashes when the buttons are
pressed.
● Battery life is about one year. Replace
the battery with a new one if the KEY
indicator light (green) flashes in the com-
bination meter. Replacing the battery
about once a year is recommended
because the KEY warning light/indicator
light may not illuminate or flash depend-
ing on the rate of battery depletion.

less function) on P. 505.
The advanced keyless entry system functions can be deactivated to prevent
any possible adverse effect on a user wearing a pacemaker or ot her medical
device. If the system is deactivated, you will be unable to start the engine by
carrying the key. Consult your Toyota dealer for details. If th e advanced key-
less entry system has been deactivated, you can start the engin e by following
the procedure indicated when the key battery goes dead.
Refer to Engine Start Function When Key Battery is Dead on P. 1 61.
: If equipped
The advanced keyless function allows you to lock/unlock the
door and the liftgate or open the liftgate/trunk lid while carrying
the key.
WARNING
■ Radio waves from the key may affect medical devices such as pac e-

attached to the sides of the lift-
gate.
Luggage Compartment

WARNING
■ Do not place anything on top of the cover
Placing luggage or other cargo on top of the luggage compartment cover is
dangerous. During sudden braking or a collision, the cargo coul d become a
projectile that could hit and injure someone. The vehicle has a light weight
luggage compartment cover to keep the contents of your luggage area out
of sight; it will not retain heavy objects that are not tied down in an accident
such as a rollover. Tie down all heavy objects, whether luggage or cargo,
using the tie down hooks.
■ Make sure luggage and cargo are secured before driving
● Not securing cargo while driving is dangerous as it could move or be
crushed during sudden braking or a collision and cause injury.
● Make sure the luggage compartment cover is firmly secured. If it is not
firmly secured, it could unexpectedly disengage resulting in in jury.

2-8. Security System
Theft Deterrent System
The system will not function unless it’s properly armed. So when you
leave the vehicle, follow the arming procedure correctly.
■System triggering conditions
The horn sounds intermittently and the hazard warning lights fl ash
for about 30 seconds when the system is triggered by any one of
the following: • Unlocking a door with the auxiliary key, door lock switch, or an
inside door-lock knob.
• Forcing open a door, the hood or the liftgate/trunk lid.
• Opening the hood by operatin g the hood release handle.
• Switching the ignition ON without using the push button start.
If the system is triggered agai n, the lights and horn will activate until
the driver’s door or the liftgate/trunk lid is unlocked with th e smart
key.
With the advanced ke yless function:
The lights and horn can also be deactivated by pressing the req uest
switch on a door.
● The liftgate/trunk lid does not open while the theft deterrent system is oper-

● If the battery goes dead while the theft deterrent system is ar med, the horn
will activate and the hazard warning lights will flash when the battery is
charged or replaced.
: If equipped
If the theft deterrent system detects an inappropriate entry in to
the vehicle, which could result in the vehicle or its contents
being stolen, the alarm alerts the surrounding area of an abnor -
mality by sounding the horn and flashing the hazard warning
lights.

When Driving
■Push Button Start Positions
●The engine starts by pressing the push button start while depre ssing the
clutch pedal (manual transaxle) or the brake pedal (automatic t ransaxle). To
switch the ignition position, press the push button start without depressing
the pedal.
● Do not leave the ignition switched ON while the engine is not r unning. Doing
so could result in the battery going dead. If the ignition is l eft in ACC (For
automatic transaxle, the selector lever is in the P position, a nd the ignition is
in ACC), the ignition switches off automatically after about 25 minutes.
■ ACC (Accessory)
The keyless entry system does not function while the push butto n start has
been pressed to ACC, and the doors will not lock/unlock even if they have
been locked manually.
■ ON
When the push button start is pressed to ON, the sound of the f uel pump
motor operating near the fuel tank can be heard. This does not indicate an
abnormality.
WARNING
■ Before leaving the driver’s seat, set the parking brake, make s ure the
selector lever is in 1st gear or R (manual transaxle) or in P ( automatic
transaxle), and always switch the ignition off
Leaving the driver’s seat without setting the parking brake, sh ifting the
selector lever to 1st gear or R (manual transaxle) or to P (automatic tran-
saxle), and switching the ignition off is dangerous. Unexpected vehicle
movement could occur which could result in an accident.
In addition, if your intention is to leave the vehicle for even a short period, it
is important to switch the ignition off, as leaving it in anoth er position will dis-
able some of the vehicle’s security systems and run the battery down.

vehicle is moving, shift into neutral (N).
The starter will not operate if the selector lever is not in P or N and the
brake pedal is not depressed sufficiently.
Press the push button start after both the KEY indicator light
(green) in the combination meter and the push button start indi cator

When Driving
After starting the engine, let it idle for about ten seconds.
●The key must be carried because the key carries an immobilizer chip that
must communicate with the engine controls at short range.
● The engine can be started when the push button start is pressed from off,
ACC, or ON.
● The push button start system functions (function which can star t the engine
by only carrying the key) can be deactivated to prevent any pos sible
adverse effect on a user wearing a pacemaker or other medical d evice. If
the system is deactivated, you will be unable to start the engi ne by carrying
the key. Consult your Toyota dealer for details. If the push bu tton start sys-
tem functions have been deactivated, you can start the engine b y following
the procedure indicated when the key battery goes dead.
Refer to Engine Start Function When Key Battery is Dead on P. 161.
● After starting a cold engine, the engine speed increases and a whining
sound from the engine compartment can be heard.
This is for improved exhaust gas purification and does not indicate defect of
the parts.
● Engine-starting is controlled by the spark ignition system.
This system meets all Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Standard
requirements regulating the impul se electrical field strength of radio noise.
● Under the following conditions, the KEY warning light (red) fla shes after the
push button start is pressed to inform the driver that the push button start
will not switch to ACC even if it is pressed from off.
• The key battery is dead.
• The key is out of operational range.
• The key is placed in areas where it is difficult for the syste m to detect the
signal ( P. 98).
• A key from another manufacturer similar to the key is in the o perational
range.
