ing the brake pedal {continuously variable transmission (CVT)} or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle) while the vehicle is sta-tionary, you can change the operation mode in the order of OFF, ACC, ON, OFF.

for approximately 30 minutes, the ACCpower auto-cutout fu
nction automatically
cuts power to the audio system and other electronic devices that
can be used during
ACC operation mode. To enable power after ACC power auto-cut- out function, press the

Changing the operation mode

CAUTION When the engine is not running, put the oper- ation mode in OFF. Leaving the operationmode in ON or ACC for a long time when the engine is not running may cause the bat- tery to be discharged, making it impossibleto start the engine.  When the battery is disconnected, the current operation mode is memo
rized. After recon-
necting the battery, the memorized mode is selected automaticall
y. Before disconnect-
ing the battery for re
pair or replacement,
make sure to put the operation mode in OFF. Be careful if you are not sure which opera-tion mode the vehicle is in when the battery is run down. The operation mode cannot be changed from OFF to ACC or ON if the F.A.S.T.-key is not detected to be in the
vehicle. Refer to “Oper-
ating range for star
ting the engine and
changing the operation mode” on page 5-11.
NOTE
 If the operation mode cannot be changed to OFF, perform the following procedure. 1. Move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then change the operation mode to OFF. (for vehicleswith continuously variable transmission (CVT)) 2. One of the other causes could be low bat- tery voltage. If this
occurs, the keyless
entry system and the F.A.S.T.-key opera-tion will also not
operate. Contact an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

2. While depressing the brake pedal {contin- uously variable transmission (CVT)} orthe clutch pedal (manual transaxle), press the accelerator peda
l halfway and hold it
there, then crank th
e engine. Release the
accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts. 3. If the engine still will
not start, the engine
could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), push the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then press theengine switch to crank the engine. If the engine does not start
after 5 to 6 seconds,
push the engine switch to stop crankingthe engine, and release the accelerator pedal. Put the opera
tion mode in OFF.
Wait a few seconds, and then press theengine switch to crank the engine again while depressing the brake pedal (CVT) or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle), butdo not push the accelerator pedal. If the engine fails to start, repeat these proce- dures. If the engine stil
l will not start, con-
tact your local Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.

If this occurs, place
the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position and let the engine idle
for at least 10 minutes.
The transaxle will wa
rm up, and you will be
able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-upoperation.

Stopping the engine

WA R N I N G Do not operate the en
gine switch while
driving except in an emergency. If the engine is stopped while driving, the brakeservomechanism will ce
ase to function and
braking efficiency will deteriorate. Also, the power steering system will not func-tion and it will require greater manual effort to operate the steering. This could result in a serious accident.
NOTE
 If you have to bring the engine to an emer- gency stop while drivi
ng, press and hold the
engine switch for 3 seconds or more, or pressit quickly 3 times or
more. The engine will
stop and the operation mode will go to ACC.  On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), do not stop the engine with the selector
lever in any position
other than the “P” (PARK) position. If the engine is stopped with
the selector lever in
any position other than the “P” (PARK) posi-tion, the operation mode will go to ACC rather than OFF. Put the operation mode
in OFF after placing
the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) posi- tion.

To start

CAUTION Do not move the gearsh
ift lever into reverse
while the vehicle is moving forward; doing so will damage the transaxle. Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal because this will cause premature clutch wear or damage. Do not coast in the “N” (Neutral) position (illegal in many states). Do not use the gearshift lever as a handrest, because this can result in premature wear of the transaxle shift forks.
NOTE
 If it is hard to shift into 1st, depress the clutch pedal a second ti
me; the shift will then
be easier.  To shift into reverse from 5th gear, move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position,and then shift it into reverse.  To avoid grinding noises when shifting into reverse, wait approxima
tely 3 seconds with
the clutch pedal depre
ssed when the vehicle
is stationary.

Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns.
Look for stones, nails,
glass, or other objects
stuck in the tread. Look
for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Check the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires (including spare tire) for proper pressure.Replace your tires before they are heavily worn out. As your vehicle is equi

sure monitoring system, there is a risk of damage to the tire inflation pressure sensorswhen the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, onl

so, the battery power
level may drop because more power is used for cold starting and driving.Before driving the vehicle, check to see if the engine runs at the proper speed and if the headlights are as bright as normally. Charge or replace the battery if necessary. During extreme cold weather, it is possi-ble that a very low battery could freeze.  Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-uptime to distribute oil to all cylinders. Then drive your vehicle slowly.  Stay at low speeds at first so that the man- ual transaxle oil or the automatic transaxle fluid has time to spread to all the lubrica- tion points.

Do not rev the engine or spin the wheels. Constant efforts to free a stuck vehicle cancause overheating and tr
ansaxle failure. Let
the engine idle for a few minutes to cool the transaxle before trying again.If your vehicle is still
stuck after several rock-
ing attempts, call for a commercial tow truck service.
 When driving on a road covered with snow or ice, use snow tires. Tire chainscannot be used on your vehicle. There may be state or local regulations about using snow tires. Always check the regu-lations in your local area before using them. Refer to “Snow tires” on page 9-20 and “Tire chains” on page 9-20. Drive slowly. Do not make sudden starts or stops, sharp turns, or slam on the brakes. Allow extra distance
between your vehi-
cle and the vehicle in front of you, and avoid sudden braking. If a skid occurs when the accelerator pedal is depressed, take your foot off the pedal. Steer gently in the direction of theskid.
 Your vehicle is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Hold the brakepedal down firmly and keep it depressed. Do not pump the brake pedal which will result in reduced braking performance. After parking on snowy or icy roads, it may be difficult to move your vehicle due to the brake being frozen. Depress theaccelerator pedal little by little to move the vehicle when safe to do so.  Drive as slow as possible when driving on bumpy, rutted roads or over potholes etc.
WA R N I N G When trying to rock
your vehicle out of a
stuck position, make sure that there are no people nearby. The
rocking motion can
make your vehicle suddenly lurch forwardor backward, and inju
re any bystanders.
On wet roads
CAUTIONAvoid flooded roads. Water is often deeper than it looks, and you
could be seriously hurt
by driving into flood water. When driving in rain, on water-covered roads, or through a car wash, water could get into the brake discs and make them fail tem-porarily. In such cases, lightly press the brake pedal to see if they are working prop- erly. If they are not, press the pedal lightlyseveral times while driving to dry the brake pads or linings, then check them again.
 When driving in rain, a layer of water may form between the tires and the road surface(hydroplaning). This loosens your tires’ gripon the road, making it difficult to steer or brake properly. When driving on a wet road:• Drive your vehicle at a safe speed.• Do not drive on worn tires.• Always keep the tires at the correct infla- tion pressures.
On snowy or icy roads
CAUTION
CAUTION Do not depress the acce
lerator pedal rapidly.
The vehicle could start moving when itbreaks free from the ice, possibly resulting in an accident.
On a bumpy or rutted road
CAUTION Driving on bumpy, rutted roads or over pot- holes can damage the tires and wheels. Wheels with low-profile tires or under-inflated tires are especially at risk for dam- age. The vehicle’s body, bumper, muffler and other parts may be dama
