Opening the fuel tank cap
●Vehicles without a smart entry & start system
Turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position and ensure that all
the doors and windows are closed.
● Vehicles with a smart entry & start system
Turn the engine switch off and ensure that all the doors and win-
dows are closed.
● Confirm the type of fuel.

■ Fuel tank opening for unleaded gasoline (gasoline engine)
To help prevent incorrect fueling, your vehicle has a fuel tank opening that
only accommodates the special nozzle on unleaded fuel pumps.
Perform the following steps to open the fuel tank cap:

You may drain the fuel filter yourself. However, as the operation is dif-
ficult, we recommend having it drained by any authorized Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer. Even if
you decide to drain it yourself, contact any authorized Toyota retailer
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Vehicles with monochrome display: The water in the fuel filter needs
to be drained if the fuel filter warning light comes on. (P. 579)
Vehicles with color display: The water in the fuel filter needs to be
drained if the fuel filter warning message is shown on the multi-infor-
mation display. (P. 587)
Turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position (vehicles without a
smart entry & start system) or off (vehicles with a smart entry & start
system).
Place a small tray under the drain plug to catch the water and any
fuel that comes out.
Turn the drain plug counter-
clockwise about 2 to 2 1/2
turns.
Operate the priming pump until
fuel begins to run out.
After draining, tighten the drain plug by hand.

Follow the procedure below to restart the engine after the system is
activated.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position.
Restart the engine.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system
Turn the engine switch to ACCESSORY mode or turn it off.
Restart the engine.
To minimize the risk of fuel leakage when the engine stalls or
when an airbag inflates upon collision, the fuel pump shut off
system stops the supply of fuel to the engine.
NOTICE
■ Before starting the engine
Inspect the ground under the vehicle.
If you find that fuel has leaked onto the ground, the fuel system has been
damaged and is in need of repair. Do not restart the engine.

WARNING
■If both the ABS and the brake system warning lights remain on
Stop your vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact any authorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized r epairer, or any reliable repairer. The
vehicle will become extremely unstable during braking, and the ABS system
may fail, which could cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
■ When the electric power steering system warning light comes on
The steering wheel may become extremely heavy.
If the steering wheel becomes heavier than usual when operating, hold
firmly and operate using more force than usual.
■ If the tire pressure warning light comes on (vehicles with a tire pres-
sure warning system)
Be sure to observe the following precautions. Failure to do so could cause a
loss of vehicle control and result in death or serious injury.
● Stop your vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible. Adjust the tire infla-
tion pressure immediately.
● Vehicles with spare tire: If the tire pressure warning light comes on even
after tire inflation pressure adjustment, it is probable that you have a flat
tire. Check the tires. If a tire is flat, change it with the spare tire and have
the flat tire repaired by the nearest authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
● Vehicles with emergency tire puncture repair kit: If the tire pressure warn-
ing light comes on even after tire inflat ion pressure adjustment, it is proba-
ble that you have a flat tire. Check the tire s. If a tire is flat, repair the flat tire
by using emergency tire puncture repair kit. ( P. 592)
● Avoid abrupt maneuvering and braking. If the vehicle tires deteriorate, you
could lose control of the steering wheel or the brakes.
■ If a blowout or sudden air leakage should occur (vehicles with a tire
pressure warning system)
The tire pressure warning system may not activate immediately.
NOTICE
■ If the fuel filter warning light comes on (diesel engine only)
Never drive the vehicle with the warning light on. Continued driving with
water accumulated in the fuel filter will damage the fuel injection pump.
■ To ensure the tire pressure warning system operates properly (vehi-
cles with a tire pressure warning system)
Do not install tires with different specif ications or makers, as the tire pres-
sure warning system may not operate properly.

■If “Front camera unavailable.” or “Front camera vision
blocked. Clean and demist windshield.” is displayed.
The following systems may be suspended until the problem shown
in the message is resolved.
● PCS (Pre-Crash Safety system)*
●LDA (Lane Departure Alert)*
●Automatic High Beam*
●RSA (Road Sign Assist)*
*: If equipped
■Engine oil change reminder message comes on (diesel engine)
Replace the engine oil filter when the engine oil change reminder
message does not come on even if you have driven over 40000 km
(25000 miles) after the engine oil was changed.
There is a possibility that the “Oil maintenance required.” message
has been displayed when you have driven less than 40000 km
(25000 miles) based on a usage or driving condition.

If you run out of fuel and the engine stalls
(diesel engine only)
Refuel your vehicle.
Pull the rubber strip on the edge to unhook it from the cover, and
then push the tabs in and lift the cover off.
To bleed the fuel system, oper-
ate the priming pump until you
feel more resistance.
