Driving
YARIS_F_OM_Europe_OM52K19E
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
■ When starting the vehicle (vehicles with a Multidrive)
Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped with the engine
running. This prevents the vehicle from creeping.
■ When driving the vehicle
● Do not drive if you are unfamiliar with the location of the brake and accel-
erator pedals to avoid depressing the wrong pedal.
• Accidentally depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake
pedal will result in sudden acceleration that may lead to an accident.
• When backing up, you may twist your body around, leading to difficulty
in operating the pedals. Make su re to operate the pedals properly.
• Make sure to keep a correct driving posture even when moving the
vehicle only slightly. This allows you to depress the brake and accelera-
tor pedals properly.
• Depress the brake pedal using your right foot. Depressing the brake
pedal using your left foot may delay response in an emergency, result-
ing in an accident.
● Do not drive the vehicle over or stop the vehicle near flammable materials.
The exhaust system and exhaust gases can be extremely hot. These hot
parts may cause a fire if there is any flammable material nearby.
● During normal driving, do not turn off the engine. Turning the engine off
while driving will not cause loss of steering or braking control, but the
power assist to these systems will be lost. This will make it more difficult to
steer and brake, so you should pull over and stop the vehicle as soon as it
is safe to do so.
However, in the event of an emergency, such as if it becomes impossible
to stop the vehicle in the normal way: P. 565
● Use engine braking (downshift) to maintain a safe speed when driving
down a steep hill.
Using the brakes continuously may cause the brakes to overheat and lose
effectiveness. ( P. 255, 263)
● Do not adjust the positions of the steering wheel, the seat, or the inside or
outside rear view mirrors while driving.
Doing so may result in a loss of vehicle control.
● Always check that all passengers’ arms, heads or other parts of their body
are not outside the vehicle.

■Tire information
● Increase the tire inflation pressure to 20.0 kPa (0.2 kgf/cm2 or bar, 3 psi)
greater than the recommended value when towing. ( P. 663)
● Increase the air pressure of the trailer tires in accordance with the total
trailer weight and according to the values recommended by the manufac-
turer of your trailer.
■ Tr a i l e r l i g h ts
Check that the turn signal lights and stoplights are operating correctly every
time you hitch up the trailer. Direct ly wiring up to your vehicle may damage
the electrical system and stop the lights from functioning correctly.
■ Break-in schedule
Toyota recommends that vehicles fitted with new power train components
should not be used for towing trailers for the first 800 km (500 miles).
■ Safety checks before towing
● Check that the maximum load limit for the towing hitch/bracket and hitch ball
is not exceeded. Bear in mind that the coupling weight of the trailer will add
to the load exerted on the vehicle. Also make sure that the total load exerted
on the vehicle is within the range of the weight limits. ( P. 234)
● Ensure that the trailer load is secure.
● Supplementary outside rear view mirrors should be added to the vehicle if
the traffic behind cannot be clearly seen with standard mirrors. Adjust the
extending arms of these mirrors on both sides of the vehicle so that they
always provide maximum visibility of the road behind.
■ Maintenance
● Maintenance must be performed more frequently when using the vehicle for
towing due to the greater weight burden placed on the vehicle compared to
normal driving.
● Retighten all bolts securing the hitching ball and bracket after towing for
approximately 1000 km (600 miles).
NOTICE
■ When the rear bumper strengthening material is aluminum
Ensure the steel bracket part does not come directly in contact with that
area.
When steel and aluminum come into contact, there is a reaction similar to
corrosion, which will weaken the section concerned and may result in dam-
age. Apply a rust inhibitor to parts that will come in contact when attaching a
steel bracket.

WARNING
●Do not subject the front sensor to a strong impact.
● Do not change the installation position or direction of the front sensor or
remove it.
● Do not disassemble the front sensor.
● Do not install an electronic device or device that emits strong electric
waves near the front sensor.
● Do not modify any components of the vehicle around the front sensor
(inside rear view mirror, sun visors, etc.) or ceiling.
● Do not attach any accessories that may obstruct the front sensor to the
hood, front grille or front bumper. C ontact any authorized Toyota retailer or
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer for details.
● If a surfboard or other long object is to be mounted on the roof, make sure
that it will not obstruct the front sensor.
● Do not modify the headlights or other lights.
● Do not attach anything to or place anything on the dashboard.
■ Installation area of front sensor on windshield
When the windshield is fogging up easily, the glass around the front sensor
may be hot due to the heater running. If the glass is touched, it may result in
burns.

● High beam may be turned on or off when unexpected by the driver.
● In the situations below, the system may not be able to correctly detect the surrounding brightness levels, and may flash or expose nearby pedestrians to the high beam. Therefore, you should consider turning the high beams on or off manually rather than relying on the Automatic High Beam system.
• In bad weather (rain, snow, fog, sandstorms, etc.) • The windshield is obscured by fog, mist, ice, dirt, etc.• The windshield is cracked or damaged.• The front sensor is deformed or dirty. • The front sensor temperature is extremely high. • Surrounding brightness levels are equal to those of headlights, tail lightsor fog lights.• Vehicles ahead have headlights or tail lights that are either switched off, dirty, are changing color, or are not aimed properly.• When driving through an area of intermittently changing brightness anddarkness. • When frequently and repeatedly driving ascending/descending roads, or roads with rough, bumpy or uneven surfaces (such as stone-pavedroads, gravel tracks, etc.).• When frequently and repeatedly taking curves or driving on a windingroad.• There is a highly reflective object ahead of the vehicle, such as a sign or a mirror. • The back of a vehicle ahead is highly reflective, such as a container on atruck.• The vehicle’s headlights are damaged or dirty.• The vehicle is listing or titling, due to a flat tire, a trailer being towed, etc.• The driver believes that the high beam may be causing problems or dis- tress to other drivers or pedestrians nearby.
■ If the Automatic High Beam indicator comes on in yellow (vehicles with monochrome display)
It may indicate a malfunction in the system. Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
■ If “Headlight system malfunction. Visit your dealer.” is displayed on the multi-information display ( vehicles with color display)
The system may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle inspected by any autho- rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.

WARNING
■To prevent the windshield from fogging up
Do not set the air outlet selector dial to during cool air operation in
extremely humid weather. The differ ence between the temperature of the
outside air and that of the windshield can cause the outer surface of the
windshield to fog up, blocking your vision.
■ To prevent burns (vehicles with outside rear view mirror defoggers)
Do not touch the outside surface of the rear view mirrors, as they can
become very hot and burn you.
NOTICE
■ To prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the air conditioning syst em on longer than necessary when the
engine is stopped.
