■Important points regarding stability
Vehicle movement resulting from uneven road surfaces and strong
crosswinds will affect handling. The vehicle may also be rocked by
passing buses or large trucks. Frequently check behind when mov-
ing alongside such vehicles. As soon as such vehicle movement
occurs, immediately start to decelerate smoothly by slowly applying
the brakes. Always steer the vehicle straight ahead while braking.
■Passing other vehicles
Consider the total combined length of your vehicle and trailer and
ensure that the vehicle-to-vehicle distance is sufficient before exe-
cuting lane changes.
■Transmission information
Vehicles with a Multidrive
To maintain engine braking efficiency, when using engine braking,
do not use the transmission in D. Transmission shift gear position
must be in 4 in the M mode. ( P. 255)
Vehicles with a manual transmission
To maintain engine braking efficiency, when using engine braking,
do not use the transmission in 5 and 6 (vehicles with a 6-speed
manual transmission) gear. ( P. 263)
■If the engine overheats
Towing a loaded trailer up a long, steep incline in temperatures
exceeding 30 C (85F) may result in the engine overheating. If the
high engine coolant temperature warning light flashes or comes on,
turn the air conditioning off immediately, leave the road and stop the
vehicle in a safe place. ( P. 636)
■When parking the vehicle
Always place wheel chocks under the wheels of both the vehicle
and trailer. Firmly set the parking brake and shift the shift lever to P
(Multidrive) or 1 or R (manual transmission).

Engine (ignition) switch (vehicles with a
smart entry & start system)
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in P (Multidrive) or N (manual trans-
mission).
Vehicles with monochrome display
Firmly depress the brake pedal (Multidrive) or clutch pedal (manual
transmission).
The smart entry & start system indicator (green) will turn on.
If the indicator light does not turn on, the engine cannot be started.
Press the engine switch shortly
and firmly.
When operating the engine switch,
one short, firm press is enough.
It is not necessary to press and
hold the switch.
The engine will crank until it starts
or for up to 30 seconds, whichever
is less.
Continue depressing the brake
pedal (Multidrive) or clutch pedal
(manual transmission) until the
engine is completely started.
Diesel engine only: The
indicator turns on. The engine will
start after the indicator light goes
out.
The engine can be started from
any engine switch mode.
Performing the following operations when carrying the elec-
tronic key on your person starts the engine or changes engine
switch mode.

■Auto power off function
Vehicles with a Multidrive
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode (the engine is
not running) for more than an hour with the shift lever in P, the engine
switch will automatically turn off. However, this function cannot entirely pre-
vent battery discharge. Do not leave the vehicle with the engine switch in
ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for long periods of time when the
engine is not running.
Vehicles with a manual transmission
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode (the engine is
not running) for more than an hour, the engine switch will automatically turn
off. However, this function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not
leave the vehicle with the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON
mode for long periods of time when the engine is not running.

■ If the engine does not start
● The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 8 3 )
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.
● Check that the shift lever is securely set in P. The engine may not start if the
shift lever is displaced out of P.
Vehicles with monochrome display
The smart entry & start system indicator light (green) will flash quickly.
Vehicles with color display
“Shift to P position to start.” will be displayed on the multi-information dis-
play.

■ Steering lock
After turning the engine switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function. Operating the
engine switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
■ When the steering lock cannot be released
Vehicles with a manual transmission
Press the engine switch while turning the steering wheel left and right.
■ Steering lock motor overheating prevention
To prevent the steering lock motor from overheating, the motor may be sus-
pended if the engine is turned on and off repeatedly in a short period of time.
In this case, refrain from operating the engine. After about 10 seconds, the
steering lock motor will resume functioning.

■ Operation of the engine switch
● If the switch is not pressed shortly and firmly, the engine switch mode may
not change or the engine may not start.
● If attempting to restart the engine immediately after turning the engine
switch off, the engine may not start in some cases. After turning the engine
switch off, please wait a few seconds before restarting the engine.

setting

NOTICE
■To prevent battery discharge
● Do not leave the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode
for long periods of time without the engine running.
● Vehicles with monochrome display: If the smart entry & start system indi-
cator (green) is illuminated, the engine switch is not off. When exiting the
vehicle, always check that the engine switch is off.
● Vehicles with color display: If “Power on” is displayed on the multi-informa-
tion display, the engine switch is not off. When exiting the vehicle, always
check that the engine switch is off.
● On vehicles with a Multidrive, do not stop the engine when the shift lever is
in a position other than P. If the engine is stopped in another shift lever
position, the engine switch will not be turned off but instead be turned to
ACCESSORY mode. If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode, battery
discharge may occur.
■ When starting the engine
● Do not race a cold engine.
● If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have your vehi-
cle checked by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized
repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately.
■ Symptoms indicating a malfunction with the engine switch
If the engine switch seems to be operating somewhat differently than usual,
such as the switch sticking slightly, there may be a malfunction.

Winter driving tips
●Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside tempera-
tures.
• Engine oil
• Engine coolant
• Washer fluid
● Have a service technician inspect the condition of the battery.
● Have the vehicle fitted with four snow tires or purchase a set of tire
chains for the front tires.
Ensure that all tires are the specified size and brand, and that chains
match the size of the tires.
Perform the following according to the driving conditions:
● Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a wiper that is frozen.
Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away
the water immediately to prevent it from freezing.
● To ensure proper operation of the climate control system fan,
remove any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in
front of the windshield.
● Check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may have accu-
mulated on the exterior lights, vehicle’s roof, chassis, around the
tires or on the brakes.
● Remove any snow or mud from the bottom of your shoes before
getting in the vehicle.
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before
driving the vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a man-
ner appropriate to the prevailing weather conditions.
