If the “4LO” indicator, “4HI” indicator or the center different ial lock indi-
cator blinks
● If the “4LO” indicator continues to blink when shifting between “4H” and “4L”,
stop the vehicle completely, move the shift lever to N and oper ate the switch
again.
● If the shift lever is moved before the “4LO” indicator turns on /off, the transfer
mode may not be shifted completely. The transfer mode disengage s both
the front and rear driveshafts from the powertrain and allows the vehicle to
move regardless of the shift position. (At this time, the indic ator blinks and
the buzzer sounds.)
Therefore, the vehicle is free to roll even if the automatic tr ansmission is in
P. You or someone else could be seriously injured. You must complete the
shifting of the transfer mode.
To complete the shifting, stop the vehicle completely, return t he shift lever to
N, and confirm that the shift was completed (The indicator turn s on/off).
● If the engine coolant temperature is too low, transfer mode may not be able
to shift. When the engine is warmer, turn the switch again.
If the “4LO” indicator, “4HI” i ndicator or the center different ial lock indicator
continues to blink even after attempting the above, there may b e a malfunc-
tion in the engine, the brake system or the four-wheel drive sy stem. In this
case, you may not be able to shift between “2WD” and “4H”, “4H” and “4L”,
and the center differential lock may not be operable. Have the vehicle
inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately.
■ Shifting to the “4L” position
The VSC off indicator will come on.
If the center differential is locked, VSC is automatically turn ed off.

When trouble arises

If a tow truck is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may be
temporarily towed using cables or chains secured to the emergen cy
towing eyelets. This should only be attempted on hard surfaced roads
for at most 50 miles (80 km) at under 18 mph (30 km/h).
A driver must be in the vehicle to steer and operate the brakes . The
vehicle’s wheels, drive train, a xles, steering and brakes must be in
good condition.
Securely attach cables or chains to the towing hooks.
Take care not to damage the vehicle body
Enter the vehicle being towed and start the engine.
If the engine does not start, turn the engine switch to the “ON” posi-
tion.
4WD models:
Turn the four-wheel drive control switch to the “2WD” position.
Shift the shift lever to N and release the parking brake.
When the shift lever cannot be shifted: P. 2 0 4
■While towing
If the engine is not running, the power assist for the brakes a nd steering will
not function, making steering and braking more difficult.
■ Wheel nut wrench
Wheel nut wrench is stored in the tool bag. ( P. 466)

WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
■When towing the vehicle
■ While towing
● When towing using cables or chains, avoid sudden starts, etc. w hich place
excessive stress on the towing eyelets, cables or chains. The t owing eye-
lets, cables or chains may become damaged, broken debris may hit peo-
ple, and cause serious damage.
● Do not turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position.
There is a possibility that the steering wheel is locked and ca nnot be oper-
ated.
2WD models: Be sure to transport the
vehicle with all four wheels raised off the
ground. If the vehicle is towed with the
tires contacting the ground, the drivetrain
and related parts may be damaged or an
accident may occur due to a change in
direction of the vehicle.
4WD models: Be sure to transport the
vehicle with all four wheels raised off the
ground. If the vehicle is towed with the
tires contacting the ground, the drivetrain
or related parts may be damaged, the
vehicle may fly off the truck.

■If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on while driving
First check the following:
●Is your vehicle low on gas?
If it is, refuel the vehicle immediately.
● Is the fuel tank cap loose?
If it is, tighten it securely.
The light will go off after taking several driving trips.
If the light does not go off even after several trips, contact your Toyota dealer
as soon as possible.
■ SRS warning light
This warning light system monitors the airbag sensor assembly, front impact
sensors, side impact sensors (front door), side impact sensors (rear), driver’s
seat position sensor, driver’s seat belt buckle switch, front passenger occu-
pant classification system (ECU and sensors), “AIR BAG ON” indi cator light,
“AIR BAG OFF” indicator light, front passenger’s seat belt buck le switch, seat
belt pretensioners, airbags, interconnecting wiring and power s ources.
( P. 38)
■ Front passenger detection sensor, seat belt reminder and warnin g
buzzer
● If luggage is placed on the front passenger seat, the front pas senger detec-
tion sensor may cause the warning light to flash and the warnin g buzzer to
sound even if a passenger is not sitting in the seat.
● If a cushion is placed on the seat, the sensor may not detect a passenger,
and the warning light may not operate properly.
■ If the low speed four-wheel drive indicator light or center dif ferential lock
indicator light blinks
Take the specified steps. ( P. 295)
■ Four-wheel drive system warning buzzer
The buzzer indicated that the transfer mode is not selected cor rectly.
