1. Slowly press down on the accelerator pedal to
get your vehicle moving again. For an all-
wheel drive vehicle, set the drive mode-sel

problem. If this occurs, place the selectorlever in the “P” (PAR

engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transaxle will wa
rm up, and you will be
able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation. The MIVEC engine automatically switches its intake-valve control between a low-speed mode and a high-speed mode in accordance with driving conditions for maximum engineperformance.

The CVT will automati

If your vehicle is equipped with the spor- tronic steering wheel paddle shifter, you can manually shift up and shift down the trans-mission. Refer to “Sports mode” on page 5-79. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal is released and ensures smooth driving. According to the conditions, the transmission will automatically shift to a lower gear ratioto achieve stronger engine braking. This may help reduce your need to use the service brake.

on the brake pedal will
affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-mature wear of brake pads. Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance
with driving condi-
tions. Never coast downhill backward in the driv-ing shift position {“
D” (DRIVE), “DS”
(DOWN SHIFT & SPORTY DRVING), “L” (LOW) position or sports mode} or coastforward in the “R” (REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and increased brake pedal and steering effort could
lead to an accident.

When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically controlled 4WD) or “LOCK” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a
slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is calle
d tight corner braking
and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-
wheel drive vehicles.
If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and thengradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start.

Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking force with less brake pedal effort.Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not being used.If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater. If you should lose the power assist for somereason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit or either of the two brake hydraulic systems stops working prop-erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle will not slow down as quickly.You will know this has happened if you find you need to press the brake down farther, or harder when slowing down or stopping, or ifthe brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display come on.

CAUTION Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type A or Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetra

If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use TypeC or Type D equipment. Even in “4WD ECO” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “AWC ECO” (S-AWC) drive mode, the vehicle cannot be towed with the front or the rear wheels on theground.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
