wiper continuously.

Precautions to observe when using wipers and washers
CAUTION If the washer is used
in cold weather, the
washer fluid sprayed onto the glass mightfreeze, blocking your vi
ew. Heat the glass
with the defroster befo
re using the washer.
NOTE
Do not use the wipers when the windshield is dry. This could scratch the glass and wear the wiper blades prematurely.  Before using the wipe
rs in cold weather,
check to be sure that the wiper blades are notfrozen to the windshield or rear window. Using the wipers while the blades are frozen could cause the wiper motor to burn out.NOTE
 If the moving wipers be
come blocked part-
way through a sweep by ic
e or other deposits
on the glass, the wipers may temporarily stopoperating to prevent the motor from over- heating. In this case, park the vehicle in a safe place, turn the ignition switch to the“OFF” position or put the operation mode in OFF, and then remove
the ice or other depos-
its.Because the wipers will start operating again after the wiper motor cools down, check that the wipers operate
before using them.
 Avoid using the washer for more than 20 sec- onds at a time. Do not operate the washerwhen the washer fluid reservoir is empty or the pump may fail.  During cold weather, add a recommended washer solution that will not freeze in the washer fluid reservoir. Otherwise the washermay not work or may be damaged.  Replace the wiper blades when they are worn. Use the proper size replacement blades. For further info

When the front wipers have frozen to the windshield at the parked
positions, turning on
this switch will heat the windshield to make the wipers operable. Pr
ess the electric rear
window defogger switch and the deicer willoperate.

The rear window defogger can be used when the engine is running. The indicator light (A) will come on whenyou press the electric rear window defogger switch. Electric current will flow through the heating wires on the rear window to helpclear away moisture or frost. After approximately 15 to 20 minutes of operation, the system wi
ll shut off automati-
cally. To switch the defogger OFF before 15 to 20minutes have passed,
press the switch again.
The indicator light will
go out and the defog-
ger will turn off.If you need the defogger for more than 15 to 20 minutes, press the switch again. This will add 15 to 20 more minutes.
NOTE
 The wiper deicer is
activated/de
activated,
depending on the operation of the rear win-dow defogger. Refer to
“Electric rear win-
dow defogger switch
” on page 5-227.
Electric rear window defog- ger switch
CAUTION The rear window defogge
r is not designed to
melt snow. Remove
any snow manually
before using the rear window defogger. Use the rear window de
fogger only after the
engine has started and
is running. Be sure to
turn the defogger swit
ch off immediately
after the window is cl
ear to save on battery
power. Do not place stickers,
tape, or other items
that are attached with adhesive over the gridwires on the rear window. When cleaning the inside
rear window, use a
soft cloth and wipe lightly over the grid wires.NOTE
 If your vehicle is equi
pped with heated out-
side rearview mirror, mist can also beremoved from the outside rearview mirrors when the rear window defogger switch is pressed. (Refer to “H
eated outside rearview
mirror” on page 5-62.)  On vehicles equipped w
ith the wiper deicer,
when the rear window defogger switch ispushed, the windshield
becomes warm and
the wipers become operable. (Refer to “Wiper deicer switch” on page 5-226.)

Release the lever and
lift the engine hood.
Support the engine hood with the hood prop. Insert the hood prop securely in the openingunder the hood marked with an arrow.
Unlatch the prop from the engine hood and put it back in its retainer. Slowly lower the engine hood about 8 inches (20 cm), then let it drop from its own weight.
WA R N I N G Never use the release lever to unlatch the engine hood while the
vehicle is in motion.
Do not drive your vehicle unless the engine hood is locked.NOTE
 To prevent damage to the engine hood and wipers, make sure the
wipers are at resting
position when you open the engine hood.
CAUTION Always insert the support prop into the hole specially made for it. Propping the engine hood at any other place
could cause the prop
to slip out and lead
to an accident.
The hood prop can fall out if the hood is lifted by a strong wind.
To close
CAUTION Be careful not to trap your hands or fingers when closing the engine hood. Make sure the engine hood is firmly closed before driving. If you drive without the engine hood com- pletely closed, it c
ould open up while driv-
ing.NOTE

To check the brake pedal free play (A), turn off the engine and press the brake pedal sev- eral times with your
foot. Then press the
pedal down with your fingers until you first feel resistance. Brake pedal free play: .1 to .3 inch (3 to 8 mm)
If the free play is not within these limits, take your vehicle to an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for adjustment.

Check the wiper blades occasionally. Cleanthem regularly to rem
ove deposits of salt and
road film. Use a sponge or cloth and a mild detergent or non-abrasive cleaner to clean theblades and glass areas. Replace the blades if they continue to streak or smear. If the blades are frozen to the windshield or rear window, do not operate the wipers untilthe ice has melted and the blades are freed, otherwise the wiper mo
tor may be damaged.

Chemicals contained in the dirt and dust picked up from air, rain, snow, or road sur- faces can damage the paint and body of yourvehicle if left on. Frequent washing and wa
xing is the best way
to protect your vehicle from this damage.Do not wash the vehicl
e in direct sunlight.
Park the vehicle in the shade and spray it with water to remove dust.
Next, using plenty of
clean water and a car washing mitt or sponge, wash the vehicle from top to bottom.Use a mild car washing soap if necessary. Rinse thoroughly and wipe
dry with a cham-
ois or soft cloth. Af
ter washing the vehicle,
carefully clean the join
ts and flanges of the
doors, hood, etc., wher
e dirt is likely to
remain.
Salt and other chemicals used on winter roads in some geographical areas can have a detri-mental effect on the vehicle underbody. You should flush the underb
ody with a high pres-
sure hose every time you wash the outside ofyour vehicle. Take special care to remove mud or other debris which could trap and hold salt andmoisture. After washing your vehicle, wipe off all waterdrops from the rubber parts around thedoors to prevent the doors from freezing.

CAUTION When washing the underside of your vehicle or the wheels, wear a pair of gloves to pro- tect your hands. If your vehicle is equipped with the rain sen- sor, place the wiper switch lever in the“OFF” position to
deactivate the rain sensor
before washing the vehi
cle. Otherwise, the
wipers will operate in
the presence of water
spray on the windshiel
d and may get dam-
aged as a result.
 Never spray or splash
water on the electrical
parts in the engine compartment. This maydamage them. Be careful also when washingthe underbody to ensure that water does not enter the engine compartment. Avoid automatic car washers that use rotat- ing brushes. These br
ushes may scratch the
paint surface and make it dull.Scratches are more not
iceable on darker col-
ored vehicles. Some hot water wash
ing equipment uses
high pressure and heat
to clean your vehicle.
Because hot wate
r can damage plastics parts
and seep inside your ve
hicle, make sure you
do the following when using such equip- ment:• Keep the washing nozzle at least 28 inches(70 cm) away from the vehicle body.• When washing around the door glass, holdthe nozzle at a distance of more than 28inches (70 cm) and at a right angle to the glass surface.
 Make sure to do the following when using an automatic car wash, with help from either this manual or the car wash operator, toavoid damaging your vehicle:• Fold the outside
rearview mirrors.
• Tape or remove the rear wiper arm assem- bly.• If your vehicle is equi
pped with roof rails
or a roof spoiler, check with the car washoperator before using the car wash.CAUTION
• If your vehicle is e
quipped with the rain
sensor, place the wiper switch lever in the“OFF” position to deac
tivate the rain sen-
sor.
During cold weather
NOTE
 When the door is frozen, opening it by force may tear off or cr
ack the rubber gasket
installed around the door. Pour warm water to melt the ice. Be
sure to thoroughly wipe
off the water after opening the door. To pre-vent freezing of the
weatherstripping on the
doors, hood, etc., treat
with silicone lubri-
