The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move. Refer to “Engine coolant temperature display”on page 5-145.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This system automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. To prevent battery drain, wait a few secondsbetween attempts to restart the engine.
1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal downfirmly with your right foot. 4. Make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 5. Press the engine switch. 6. Confirm that all warning lights and warn- ing displays are functioning properly.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rearwindow defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold itthere, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car-bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up and cause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine at high rpms or drive at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up.
Starting the engine
NOTE
After the engine has not started for a while, the brake pedal effort needed to start theengine may become greater. If this occurs, depress the brake pedal more firmly than usual.NOTE
The engine can only be started when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) or “N”(NEUTRAL) position. For safety reasons, the engine should be started when the selector lever is in the “P”(PARK) position in which the driving wheels lock.
NOTE
Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warms up.

This model is equipped with an electronically controlled fuel injection system. This is a sys- tem that automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. The starter should not be run for more than15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened.
2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal down firmly with your right foot. 4. Make sure the selector lever is in the “P”(PARK) position. 5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warninglights are functioning properly before starting the engine. 6. Turn the ignition switch to the “START”position without pressing the acceleratorpedal. Release the ignition switch when the engine starts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rearwindow defogger, are turned off.
2. While depressing the brake pedal, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after theengine starts. 3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal, push the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then crank the engine for5 to 6 seconds. Return the ignition switchto the “OFF” and release the accelerator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds whiledepressing the brake pedal, but do not push the accelerator pedal. Release the ignition switch if the engine starts. If theengine fails to start, repeat these proce- dures. If the engine st
ill will not start, con-
tact your local Mitsubishi Motors dealeror a repair facility of your choice for assistance.

S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control) (if so equipped) 5-66 Features and controls
5
N00541301091
S-AWC is an integrated vehicle dynamics control system that helps enhance driving performance, cornering performance, and vehicle stability over a wide range of drivingconditions through integrated management of the electronically controlled 4WD, the AYC (Active Yaw Control), the ABS and the ASC. The electronically controlled 4WD is a sys- tem that improves acceleration performance and stability performance by controllingfront-rear distribution of driving torque with
operating the electronic control coupling arranged in the rear differential assembly. The AYC is a system with a yaw control function, that controls the left-right driv- ing/braking force using the brakes. The yaw control function is a function that enhances vehicle cornering performance and vehicle stability with management of vehicleturning power (yaw moment) by controlling the drive power difference of the left and right wheels and the braking force when thevehicle does not turn in response to steering input, such as when the steering wheel is turned quickly or when driving on slipperyroad.
N00542401099
Select the drive mode from the followingthree types to suit the driving conditions.
S-AWC (Super-All Wheel Control)
(if so equipped)
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the S-AWC. Even the S- AWC cannot prevent the natural laws ofphysics from acting on the vehicle. This sys- tem, like any other system, has limits and cannot help you to maintain traction and con-trol of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reck- less driving can lead to accidents. It is the driver’s responsibility to drive carefully. This means taking into account the traffic, road and environmental conditions.
Electronically Controlled 4WD
NOTE
On vehicles equipped with lever type park- ing brake, if the parking brake lever is pulled up while the vehicle is moving, the front-reardistribution of driving torque control will be temporarily suspended, which will allow the rear wheel to lock easier.
Active Yaw Control (AYC)
Yaw control function
CAUTION Control of the braking force does not enhance the stopping performance of the vehicle, therefore, pay careful attention to the safety of your surroundings when driv- ing.
S-AWC drive mode
S-AWC drive mode
Function
AUTO
This mode can be used on both dry and wet roads. The distri-bution of driving/braking torque to each wheel is auto- matically controlled according to the driving condition.
SNOW
This mode is for driving on slippery road surfaces, such as snow-covered roads.
GRAVEL
This mode is for driving where maximum traction is required. This mode is suitable for driv- ing on rough roads or driving in mud, sand or fresh snow.

On slippery surfaces, the traction control function prevents the drive wheels from spin- ning excessive, thus helping the vehicle tostart moving from a stop
ped condition. It also
provides sufficient driving force and steering performance as the vehicle turns while press-ing the acceleration pedal.
N00559301074
The skid control function is designed to helpthe driver maintain control of the vehicle onslippery roads or during rapid steering maneuvers. It works by controlling the engine output and the brake on each wheel.
CAUTION Do not over-rely on the ASC. Even the ASC cannot prevent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicl
e. This system, like
any other system, has limits and cannot helpyou to maintain traction and control of the vehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accidents. It is the driver’sresponsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, theASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.
NOTE
An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa- tions. The sound is associated with checking the operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if youdepress it. These do not indicate a malfunc- tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
When the ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment. This indicates that the system is operating normally. It does not indicate a malfunction. When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.
Traction control function
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function
NOTE
The skid control function operates at speeds of approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.
