Problems with the rear window defroster

The on-board voltage is too low because too many electrical con-sumers are switched on.
XSwitch off any consumers that are not required, e.g. readinglamps, interior lighting or the seat heating.When the battery is sufficiently charged, the rear windowdefroster can be activated again.
The roof is open.
XClose the roof.When the roof is closed, the rear window defroster can be activa-ted again.
Switching air-recirculation mode
on/off
General notes
If you switch on air-recirculation mode, thewindows can fog up more quickly, in particularat low temperatures. Only use air-recirculationmode briefly to prevent the windows from fog-ging up.
Activating/deactivating
XTurn the SmartKey to positionHin the igni-tion lock (Ypage 118).
XTo activate:press therbutton.The indicator lamp in therbutton lightsup.
iAir-recirculation mode is automaticallyactivated at high levels of pollution (dual-zone automatic climate control only) or athigh outside temperatures. When air-recir-culation mode is activated automatically,the indicator lamp in therbutton is notlit. Outside air is added after about30 minutes.
XTo deactivate:press therbutton.The indicator lamp in therbutton goesout.
iAir-recirculation mode deactivates auto-matically:
Rafter approximately five minutes at out-side temperatures below approximately41 ‡ (5 †)
Rafter approximately five minutes if coolingwith air dehumidification is deactivated
Rafter approximately 30 minutes at outsidetemperatures above approximately 41 ‡(5 †) if the "Cooling with air dehumidifi-cation" function is activated
Switching the residual heat on or off
General notes
The residual heat function is only available onvehicles for Canada.
It is possible to make use of the residual heatof the engine to continue heating the station-ary vehicle for up to 30 minutes after theengine has been switched off. The heatingtime depends on the set interior temperature.
Activating/deactivating
XTurn the SmartKey to position

iIf you activate the residual heat function athigh temperatures, only the ventilation willbe activated. The blower runs at mediumspeed.
XTo deactivate:press theKorVbut-ton.The indicator lamp in theKorVbut-ton goes out.
Residual heat is deactivated automatically:
Rafter approximately 30 minutes
Rwhen the ignition is switched on
Rif the battery voltage drops

GWARNING
Very hot or very cold air can flow from the
air vents. This could result in burns or frost-
bite in the immediate vicinity of the air
vents. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that all vehicle occupants always
maintain a sufficient distance to the air out-
lets. If necessary, redirect the airflow to
another area of the vehicle interior.
GWARNING
When AIRSCARF is switched on, very hot air
can flow from the vents in the head
restraints. This could result in burns in the
immediate vicinity of the air vents. There is a
risk of injury.
Reduce the heater output before it becomes
too hot.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh airthrough the air vents into the vehicle interior,please observe the following notes:
Rkeep the air inlet grille on the hood and inthe engine compartment on the front-passenger side free of blockages, such asice, snow or leaves.
Rnever cover the air vents or air intake grillesin the vehicle interior.
iYou can move the adjusters for the airvents vertically or horizontally to set thedirection of the airflow.
iFor optimal climate control in the vehicle,open the air vents completely and set theadjusters to the central position.
Setting the center air vents
XTo open the center air vents:turn theadjuster in one of center air ventsCcoun-ter-clockwise.
XTo close the center air vents:turn theadjuster in one of center air ventsCclock-wise until it engages.

The engine starts automatically if:

When the vehicle has been braked to a stand-still, the electric parking brake is applied.
Parking the vehicle for a long period
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer thanfour weeks, the battery may be damaged byexhaustive discharging.
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer thansix weeks, the vehicle may suffer damage as aresult of lack of use.

If you switch off the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could
affect, for example, the power steering and
the brake boosting effect. You will require
considerably more effort to steer and brake.
There is a risk of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving.

If you operate mobile communication equip-
ment when driving, you may be distracted
from the traffic situation. You could also
lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of
an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the vehi-
cle is stationary.
Observe the legal requirements for the countryin which you are driving. Some jurisdictionsprohibit the driver from using a mobile phonewhile driving a vehicle.
If you make a call while driving, always usehands-free mode. Only operate the telephonewhen the traffic situation permits. If you areunsure, pull over to a safe location and stopbefore operating the telephone.
Bear in mind that at a speed of only 30 mph(approximately 50 km/h), the vehicle covers adistance of 44 ft (approximately 14 m) persecond.
Drive sensibly – save fuel
Observe the following tips to save fuel:
RThe tires should always be inflated to therecommended tire pressure.
RRemove unnecessary loads.
RWarm up the engine at low engine speeds.
RAvoid frequent acceleration or braking.
RObserve the service intervals in the Mainte-nance Booklet or in the service interval dis-play. Have all the maintenance work carriedin accordance with Daimler AG regulations.
Fuel consumption also increases when drivingin cold weather, in stop-start traffic and in hillyterrain.
Drinking and driving
GWARNING
Drinking and driving and/or taking drugs
and driving are very dangerous combina-
tions. Even a small amount of alcohol or
drugs can affect your reflexes, perceptions
and judgment.
The possibility of a serious or even fatal
accident is greatly increased when you drink
or take drugs and drive.
Do not drink or take drugs and drive or allow
anyone to drive who has been drinking or
taking drugs.

Rif the vehicle is accelerated, e.g. by a vehi-
cle occupant
There is a risk of an accident.
Always deactivate Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC and secure the vehicle against
rolling away before you leave it.
Further information on deactivating Active Dis-tance Assist DISTRONIC (Ypage 149).
If Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC detectsthat the vehicle in front is stopping, it brakesyour vehicle until it is stationary.
Once your vehicle is stationary, it remains sta-tionary and you do not need to depress thebrake.
iAfter a time, the electric parking brakesecures the vehicle and relieves the servicebrake.
iDepending on the specified minimum dis-tance, your vehicle will come to a standstillat a sufficient distance behind the vehicle infront. The specified minimum distance is setusing the control on the cruise control lever.
When Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC isactivated, the transmission is shifted automati-cally to position]if:
Rthe driver's seat belt is not fastened and thedriver's door is open
Rthe engine is switched off, unless it is auto-matically switched off by the ECO start/stop function.
The electric parking brake is applied automati-cally if Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC isactive when the vehicle is stationary and:
Ra system malfunction occurs
Rthe power supply is not sufficient
If a malfunction occurs, the transmission mayalso shift to position]automatically.
Setting a speed
Keep in mind that it may take a brief momentuntil the vehicle has accelerated or braked tothe speed set.
XTo adjust the set speed in 1 mph incre-ments (1 km/h increments):briefly pressthe cruise control lever upCto the pres-
sure point for a higher speed, or downDfor a lower speed.Every time the cruise control lever ispressed up or down, the last speed stored isincreased or reduced.

Setting a specified minimum distance
You can set the specified minimum distancefor Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC by vary-ing the time span between one and two sec-onds. This determines the distance that ActiveDistance Assist DISTRONIC is to maintain fromthe vehicle in front, depending on the roadspeed. You can see this distance in the multi-function display (Ypage 149).
The specified minimum distance can bechanged while Active Distance AssistDISTRONIC is switched on or off.
Make sure that you maintain a sufficiently safedistance from the vehicle in front. Adjust thedistance to the vehicle in front if necessary.
