exceeded.
For towing distances over 30 miles
(50 kilometers), the entire vehicle must be
raised and transported.
It is better to have the vehicle transported than
to have it towed away.
If the vehicle has suffered transmission damage, have it transported on a transporter or trailer.
The automatic transmission must be in position
005C when the vehicle is being towed.
The battery must be connected and charged.
Otherwise, you:
R cannot turn the SmartKey to position 0048in
the ignition lock
R cannot release the electric parking brake
R cannot shift the automatic transmission to
position 005C
Disarm the automatic locking feature before the vehicle is towed (Y page 219). You could other-
wise be locked out when pushing or towing the
vehicle. Permitted towing methods
Mercedes-Benz recommends transporting your
vehicle in the case of a breakdown, rather than
towing it away.
When towing away, use a towing rope or a tow-
ing bar with both axles on the ground. Do not use any tow bar systems. Installing/removing the towing eye
Installing the towing eye The brackets for the screw-in towing eye are
located in the bumpers. They are at the front and
rear behind covers 00430044.
X Remove the towing eye from the vehicle tool
kit (Y page 310).
X Press the mark on cover 0043or0044 inwards in
the direction of the arrow.
X Take cover 0043or0044 off the opening.
X Screw in the towing eye clockwise as far as it
will go and tighten it.

Unscrew and remove the towing eye.
X Front cover: position left-hand side of
cover 0043in the bumper and press it in on the
right-hand side until it engages.
X Rear cover: position top of cover 0044in the
bumper and press it in at the bottom until it
engages.

The automatic transmission shifts to position
005D automatically when you open the driver's or
front-passenger door or when you remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. 322

In order to ensure that the automatic transmis-
sion stays in position 005Cwhen towing away the
vehicle, you must observe the following points:
X Make sure that the vehicle is stationary.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 0048in the igni-
tion lock.
X Depress and hold the brake pedal.
X Shift the automatic transmission to position
005C.
X Leave the SmartKey in position 0048in the igni-
tion lock.
X Release the brake pedal.
X Release the electric parking brake.
X Switch on the hazard warning lamps
(Y page 108).
In order to signal a change of direction when
towing the vehicle with the hazard warning
lamps switched on, use the combination switch as usual. In this case, only the indicator lamps
for the direction of travel flash. After resetting
the combination switch, the hazard warning
lamp starts flashing again. Transporting the vehicle
4MATIC vehicles/vehicles with auto-
matic transmission !
When the vehicle is loaded for transport, the
front and rear axles must be stationary and on
the same transportation vehicle. Positioning
over the connection point of the transport
vehicle is not permitted. The drive train may
otherwise be damaged. All vehicles !
You may only secure the vehicle by the
wheels, not by parts of the vehicle such as
axle or steering components. Otherwise, the
vehicle could be damaged.
The towing eye can be used to pull the vehicle
onto a trailer or transporter for transporting pur-
poses.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 0048in the igni-
tion lock.
X Shift the automatic transmission to position
005C.
As soon as the vehicle has been loaded:
X Prevent the vehicle from rolling away by
applying the electric parking brake.
X Shift the automatic transmission to position
005D.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 0092in the igni-
tion lock and remove it.
X Secure the vehicle.
Securing the vehicle !
After loading, the vehicle must be secured at
all four wheels. Otherwise, the vehicle could
be damaged.
A minimum distance of 8 in (20 cm) up and
4 in (10 cm) down must be maintained to the transport platform.
X Secure all four wheels after loading the vehi-
cle.
Vehicles with ADS PLUS (Adaptive
Damping System PLUS) Important safety notes

WARNING
The weaker damping forces of the vehicle to
be transported can cause the vehicle/trailer
combination to swing.
As a result, when transporting vehicles with
Adaptive Damping System PLUS, the vehicle/ trailer combination may start to skid. Conse-
quently, you could lose control of the vehicle.
There is a risk of accident and injury. Towing and tow-starting

When transporting, make sure that:
R the vehicle is has been loaded onto the
transporter correctly
R the vehicle is secured at all four wheels with
suitable tensioning straps
R you do not exceed the maximum permissi-
ble speed of 35 mph (60 km/h)
Securing the vehicle ! After loading, the vehicle must be secured at
all four wheels. Otherwise, the vehicle could
be damaged.

! Vehicles with 4MATIC must not be towed
with either the front or the rear axle raised, as

Vehicles with 4MATIC may either be towed away with both axles on the ground or be loaded up
and transported.
If the vehicle's transmission, front, or rear axle is
damaged, have the vehicle transported on a
truck or trailer.
In the event of damage to the electrical sys-
tem: if the battery is defective, the automatic
transmission will be locked in position 005D. To
shift the automatic transmission to position 005C,
you must provide power to the vehicle's on-
board electrical system in the same way as
when jump-starting (Y page 318).
Have the vehicle transported on a transporter or
trailer. Tow-starting (emergency engine
starting)
! Vehicles with automatic transmission must
not be tow-started. You could otherwise dam- age the automatic transmission.
You can find information on "Jump-starting"
under (Y page 318). Fuses
Important safety notes

WARNING
If you manipulate or bridge a faulty fuse or if
you replace it with a fuse with a higher amper- age, the electric cables could be overloaded.
This could result in a fire. There is a risk of an
accident and injury.
Always replace faulty fuses with the specified
new fuses having the correct amperage.
! For the fuse boxes in the engine compart-
ment and under the rear bench seat, only use fuses with the suffix "S". Otherwise, compo-
nents or systems could be damaged.
! Make sure that no moisture can enter the
fuse box when the cover is open.
! When closing the cover, make sure that it is
lying correctly on the fuse box. Moisture seep-
ing in or dirt could otherwise impair the oper- ation of the fuses.
The fuses in your vehicle serve to close down
faulty circuits. If a fuse blows, all the compo-
nents on the circuit and their functions stop
operating.
Blown fuses must be replaced with fuses of the
same rating, which you can recognize by the
color and value. The fuse ratings are listed in the fuse allocation chart.
The fuse allocation chart is located in the fuse
box under the rear bench seat (Y page 326).
If a newly inserted fuse also blows, have the
cause traced and rectified at a qualified special- ist workshop, e.g. an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center. Before changing a fuse

Remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock.
Or, on vehicles with KEYLESS-GO start function

X Open the driver's door.
The vehicle electronics are now in key posi-
tion 0092. This is the same as the SmartKey
having been removed.
The driver’s door can be closed again.
X Make sure that the engine cannot be started
via your smartphone (Y page 129).
X Secure the vehicle against rolling away
(Y page 144).
All indicator lamps in the instrument cluster
must be off.
The fuses are located in various fuse boxes:
R Fuse box on the front-passenger side of the
dashboard
R Fuse box in the engine compartment on the
right-hand side of the vehicle, when viewed in
the direction of travel
R Fuse box under the rear bench seat Dashboard fuse box
! Do not use a pointed object such as a screw-
driver to open the cover in the dashboard. You
could damage the dashboard or the cover.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have this work performed at a qualified specialist work-
shop, e.g. at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Cen-
ter. X
Open the front-passenger door.
X Open the glove box.
X To open: pull cover 0043outwards in the direc-
tion of the arrow and remove it.
X To close: clip in cover 0043on the front of the
dashboard. Make sure that the door seal is positioned
over the cover.
X Fold cover 0043inwards until it engages.
X Close the glove box. Fuse box in the engine compartment

WARNING
When the hood is open and the windshield
wipers are set in motion, you can be injured by the wiper linkage. There is a risk of injury.
Always switch off the windshield wipers and
the ignition before opening the hood. X
Open the hood (Y page 296).
X Use a dry cloth to remove any moisture from
the fuse box.
X To open: open clamps 0044.
X Fold cover 0043up in the direction of the arrow
and remove it.
X To close: check whether the seal is seated
correctly in cover 0043.
X Insert cover 0043at the side of the fuse box into
the retainers.
X Fold down cover 0043and close clamps 0044.

R deformation or severe corrosion on wheels
Regularly check the tire tread depth and the
condition of the tread across the whole width of
all tires (Y page 328). If necessary, turn the
front wheels to full lock in order to inspect the
inner side of the tire surface.
All wheels must have a valve cap to protect the
valve against dirt and moisture. Do not mount
anything onto the valve other than the standard valve cap or other valve caps approved by
Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle. Do not use anyother valve caps or systems, e.g. tire pressure
monitoring systems.
Regularly check the pressure of all the tires par- ticularly prior to long trips. Adjust the tire pres-
sure as necessary (Y page 330).
Observe the notes on the emergency spare
wheel (Y page 353).
The service life of tires depends, among other
things, on the following factors:
R Driving style
R Tire pressure
R Distance covered Notes on tire tread

WARNING
If there is insufficient tire tread, the tire trac-
tion decreases. The tire tread is no longer able to dissipate water. This increases the risk of
hydroplaning when the road surface is wet,
particularly when the vehicle's speed is not
adapted to the road conditions. There is a risk
of an accident.
When the tire pressure is too high or too low,
tires may wear differently at different points
on the tire tread. Therefore, regularly check
the tire tread depth and the condition of the
tread across the whole width of all tires.
Minimum tire tread depth on:
R Summer tires: 00CEin (3 mm)
R M+S tires: 00CFin (4 mm)
For safety reasons, have the tires replaced
before they reach the legally prescribed min-
imum tire tread depth. Marking
0043shows where the bar indicator
(arrow) for tread wear is integrated into the tire
tread.
Treadwear indicators (TWI) are required by law. Six indicators are positioned on the tire tread.
They are visible once a tread depth of approx-
imately 00CDin (1.6 mm) has been reached. If this
is the case, the tire is so worn that it must be
replaced. Selecting, mounting and replacing
tires
R Only mount tires and wheels of the same type
and make.
Exception: it is permissible to mount a differ-
ent type or make in the event of a flat tire.
Observe here the "MOExtended tires (tires
with run-flat characteristics)" section
(Y page 311).
R Only mount tires of the correct size onto the
wheels.
R Break in new tires at moderate speeds for the
first 60 miles (100 km). The new tires only
reach their full performance after this dis-
tance.
R Do not drive with tires which have too little
tread depth. This significantly reduces the
traction on wet roads (hydroplaning).
R Replace the tires after six years at the latest,
regardless of wear.

You can recognize the tire pressure loss warning

Service menu of the multifunction display.
Information on the message display can be
found in the "Restarting the tire pressure loss
warning system" section (Y page 334).
Important safety notes The tire pressure warning system does not warn
you of an incorrectly set tire pressure. Observe
the notes on the recommended tire pressure
(Y page 330).
The tire pressure loss warning does not replace
the need to regularly check the tire pressure. An even loss of pressure on several tires at the
same time cannot be detected by the tire pres-
sure loss warning system.
The tire pressure monitor is not able to warn you of a sudden loss of pressure, e.g. if the tire is
penetrated by a foreign object. In the event of a
sudden loss of pressure, bring the vehicle to a
halt by braking carefully. Avoid abrupt steering
movements.
The function of the tire pressure loss warning
system is limited or delayed if:
R snow chains are mounted on your vehicle's
tires.
R road conditions are wintry.
R you are driving on sand or gravel.
R you adopt a very sporty driving style (corner-
ing at high speeds or driving with high rates of
acceleration).
R you are driving with a heavy load (in the vehi-
cle or on the roof).
Restarting the tire pressure loss warn-
ing system Restart the tire pressure loss warning system if
you have:
R changed the tire pressure
R changed the wheels or tires
R mounted new wheels or tires
X Before restarting, make sure that the tire
pressures are set properly on all four tires for
the respective operating conditions.
The recommended tire pressure can be found on the Tire and Loading Information placard on the B-pillar. Additionally, a tire pressure
table is attached to the fuel filler flap. The tire
pressure loss warning system can only give
reliable warnings if you have set the correct
tire pressure. If an incorrect tire pressure is
set, these incorrect values will be monitored.
X Also observe the notes in the section on tire
pressures (Y page 330).
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 0048
in the ignition lock (Y page 127).
X Press the 0059or0065 button on the steering
wheel to select the Service
Service menu.
X Press the 0063or0064 button to select
Tire Pressure Tire Pressure.

General notes If a tire pressure monitor is installed, the vehi-
cle's wheels have sensors that monitor the tire
pressures in all four tires. The tire pressure mon-
itor warns you if the pressure drops in one or
more of the tires. The tire pressure monitor only functions if the corresponding sensors are
installed in all wheels. 334

sudden loss of pressure, bring the vehicle to a
halt by braking carefully. Avoid abrupt steering
movements.
The tire pressure monitor has a yellow warning
lamp in the instrument cluster for indicating
pressure loss or a malfunction. Whether the
warning lamp flashes or lights up indicates
whether a tire pressure is too low or the tire
pressure monitor is malfunctioning:
R if the warning lamp is lit continuously, the tire
pressure on one or more tires is significantly
too low. The tire pressure monitor is not mal- functioning.
R if the warning lamp flashes for approximately
a minute and then remains lit constantly, the
tire pressure monitor is malfunctioning.
In addition to the warning lamp, a message
appears in the multifunction display. Observe
the information on display messages
(Y page 245).
It may take up to ten minutes for a malfunction
of the tire pressure monitor to be indicated. A
malfunction will be indicated by the tire pres-
sure warning lamp flashing for approximately
one minute and then remaining lit. When the
malfunction has been rectified, the tire pressure warning lamp goes out after a few minutes of
driving.
The tire pressure values indicated by the on-
board computer may differ from those meas-
ured at a gas station with a pressure gauge. The
tire pressures shown by the on-board computer
refer to those measured at sea level. At high
altitudes, the tire pressure values indicated by a pressure gauge are higher than those shown by
the on-board computer. In this case, do not
reduce the tire pressures.
The operation of the tire pressure monitor can
be affected by interference from radio transmit- ting equipment (e.g. radio headphones, two-wayradios) that may be being operated in or near the
vehicle.

If an emergency spare wheel is mounted, the
system may continue to show the tire pressure
of the wheel that has been removed for a few

emergency spare wheel's current tire pressure.
Tire pressure monitor warning mes-
sages If the tire pressure monitor detects a pressure
loss in one or more tires, a warning message is
shown in the multifunction display. The yellow
tire pressure warning lamp then lights up.
R If the Please Correct Tire Pressure

message appears in the multifunction display, the tire pressure in at least one tire is too low.
The tire pressure must be corrected when the
opportunity arises.
R If the Check Tires Check Tires message appears in the
multifunction display, the tire pressure in at
least one tire has dropped significantly. The
tires must be checked.
R If the Warning Warning Tire

Malfunction message
appears in the multifunction display, the tire
pressure in at least one tire has dropped sud-
denly. The tires must be checked.
Be sure to observe the instructions and safety
notes in the display messages in the "Tires" sec-
tion (Y page 245).
If the positions of the wheels on the vehicle are changed, the tire pressures may be displayed in
the wrong positions for a short time. This is rec-
tified after a few minutes of driving, and the tire pressures are displayed for the correct posi-
tions. 336

Restarting the tire pressure monitor
When you restart the tire pressure monitor, all
existing warning messages are deleted and the
warning lamps go out. The monitor uses the cur-
rently set tire pressures as the reference values
for monitoring. In most cases, the tire pressure
monitor will automatically detect the new refer- ence values after you have changed the tire
pressure. However, you can also set reference
values manually as described here. The tire
pressure monitor then monitors the new tire
pressure values.
X Set the tire pressure to the value recommen-
ded for the corresponding driving situation on the Tire and Loading Information placard on
the driver's side B-pillar (Y page 330).
You can find more tire pressure values for
various operating conditions in the tire pres-
sure table inside the fuel filler flap
(Y page 331).
X Make sure that the tire pressure is correct on
all four wheels.
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 0048
in the ignition lock.
X Press the 0059or0065 button on the steering
wheel to select the Serv. Serv.menu.
X Press the 0063or0064 button to select
Tire Pressure

WARNING
Overloaded tires can overheat, causing a
blowout. Overloaded tires can also impair the steering and driving characteristics and lead
to brake failure. There is a risk of accident.
Observe the load rating of the tires. The load
rating must be at least half of the GAWR of
your vehicle. Never overload the tires by
exceeding the maximum load.
Two instruction labels on your vehicle show the maximum possible load.
