Combustion engines emit poisonousexhaustgases such as carbon monoxide. Inhalingtheseexhaustgases is hazardoustohealthand can leadtopoisoning.
Never leavethe enginerunning in anenclosed space without sufficientventi‐lation.
\nWARNINGRisk offirecausedbyflam‐mable material ontheexhaust system
Flammable materials brought inbyeither ani‐mals or environmental influences may igniteiftheycome into contact withhot parts ofthe engine orexhaust system.
Therefore,checkregularlythatthereare noflammable materials intheengine compartment or ontheexhaustsystem.
Requirements:RThe SmartKeyis located inthevehicle andthe SmartKeybattery is not discharged.

Toswitch onthe power supply:press but‐ton1once.You can activatethe windshield wipers,forexample.
The power supplyis switched off again ifthefol‐lowing conditions are met:
RYou openthe driver's door
RYou press button1twice.
Toswitch onthe ignition:press button1twice.The indicator lamps inthe instrument clusterlight up.
The ignition is switched off again if one ofthefollowing conditions is met:
RYou do notstartthevehicle within15minutes andthe transmission is in posi‐tion]orthe electric parking brake isapplied.
RYou press button1once.
Startingthevehicle
Startingthevehicle withthestart/stop but‐ton
Requirements:RThe SmartKeyis located inthevehicle andthe SmartKeybattery is not discharged.
Shiftthe transmissiontoposition]or\\.
Depressthe brake pedal and press button1once.
Ifthevehicle does notstart:switch off non-essential consumers and press button1once.
Ifthevehiclestill does notstart andthePlace the Key in the Marked Space SeeOperator's Manualdisplay message alsoappears inthe multifunction display:startthevehicle in emergency operation mode.
You can switchoffthe engine while drivingbypressing button1for aboutthree seconds. Besuretoobservethe safety notes under "Drivingtips".
Startingthevehicle in emergency operationmodeIfthevehicle does notstart andthePlace theKey in the Marked Space See Operator's Manualmessage appears inthe multifunction display,you canstartthevehicle in emergency operationmode.

Make surethat marked space2is empty.
RemoveSmartKey1fromthekeyring.
Place SmartKey1in marked space2.Thevehicle willstart after a short time.
IfyouremoveSmartKey1from markedspace2the engine continuesrunning.Forfurthervehiclestarts however,SmartKey1must be located in marked space2duringthe entire journey.
Havethe SmartKey1checked at aqualifiedspecialistworkshop.
Ifthevehicle does notstart:
Place SmartKey1in marked space2andleaveitthere.
Depressthe brake pedal andstartthevehicleusingthestart/stop button.
You can also switchonthe power supplyorthe ignition withthestart/stop button.
Startingthevehicle viaRemoteOnline serv‐ices
Cooling or heatingthevehicle interior beforecommencingyour journey
This function is notavailable in all countries.
Ifyoustartthevehicle viayour smartphone,thepreviously selected air conditioning adjustmentis active.
Ensurethefollowing beforestartingthe engine:
RThe legalstipulations inthe area whereyourvehicle is parked allow enginestarting viasmartphone.
RIt is safetostart andrunthe engine whereyourvehicle is parked.
RThe fueltank is sufficientlyfilled.
RThestarter battery is sufficientlycharged.

Chargingthe batterybefore commencingyour journey
This function is notavailable in all countries.
RIfthevehicle battery is discharged,youreceivea message onyour smartphone.
RYou canthenstartthevehicle withthesmartphonetochargethe battery.
RThevehicle is automatically switched offafterten minutes.
Ensurethefollowing beforestartingthe engine:
RThe legalstipulations inthe area whereyourvehicle is parked allow enginestarting viasmartphone.
RIt is safetostart andrunthe engine whereyourvehicle is parked.

ECO Assistanalyzes dataforthevehicle'sexpec‐tedroute. This allowsthe systemtooptimallyadjustthe drivingstylefortheroute ahead, savefuel andrecuperate. Ifthe system detects anevent ahead, e.g. a speed limit or a traffic circle,it will appear onthe multifunction display1.Thefollowing symbols can be displayed:
Not allevents can be displayed, depending ontheengine type.

A different number of segments2will appeararoundthe symbol depending onthe distancetotheevent ahead:
RFew segments:theevent ahead is near.
RMany segments:theevent ahead is furtheraway.
Whenthevehicle nearstheevent, ECO Assistwill calculatethe optimal speedfor maximumfuel economy andrecuperativeenergy based onthe distance, speed and downhill gradient. The
Foot off the Acceleratormessagewill appear onthe multifunction display.Ifthe driver lifts offtheaccelerator pedal in good time,theremainingsegments onthe display will turn green untiltheevent shown isreached. The drivetrain will besetfor maximum fuel economy.Thevehicle willcoast, withthe combustion engine switched offif necessary,andrecuperate on itsown usingthe electric motor.Recuperation willchargethebattery.
Ifthere is noresponsetotheFoot off the Accel-eratorprompt,the segments willremain white.Theevent will be shownfor a short time after ithas been passed.
Iftheevent involves avehicle ahead and whenthe coast-downrecommendation is given, allsegments will immediately turn green oncethereis aresponsetotheFoot off the Acceleratorprompt.
ForActive ECO Assistin drive program;,symbol3will appear onthe multifunction dis‐play and onthe head-up display beside transmis‐sion position[. Symbol3will also appearwhenthe assistant displayis not selected.

Applying/releasingthe electric parkingbrake manually
Applying
Push handle1.TheredI(USA) or$(Canada) indica‐tor lamp appears inthe instrument cluster.
The electric parking brake is only securelyapplied ifthe indicator lamp is lit continu‐ously.
Releasing
Switchonthe ignition.
Pull handle1.TheredI(USA) or$(Canada) indica‐tor lamp inthe instrument cluster goes out.
Emergency brakingPress and hold handle1.Whenthevehicle has been brakedto astandstill,the electric parking brake isapplied. TheredI(USA) or$(Can‐ada) indicator lamp appears inthe instru‐ment cluster.
Notes on parkingthevehiclefor anextendedperiod
Ifyou leavethevehicle parkedfor longerthanfourweeks,the disconnected battery may bedamagedbydeep discharge.
Ifyou leavethevehicle parkedfor longerthan sixweeks, it may suffer disuse damage.

Standby mode (extension of thestarter bat‐tery's period out of use)
Standby mode function
This function is notavailablefor all models.
Ifstandby mode is activated,thevehicle can beparkedfor anextended period of time withoutlosing power.
Standby mode ischaracterizedbythefollowing:
RThestarter battery is preserved.
RThe maximum non-operational time out ofuse is displayed inthe multimedia systemdisplay.
RThe connectiontoonline services is interrup‐ted.

Ifthefollowing conditions are fulfilled,standbymode can be activated or deactivated usingthemultimedia system:
RThe engine is switched off.
RThe ignition is switched on.
Exceedingthevehicle's displayed non-opera‐tional time may cause inconvenience, i.e. it can‐not be guaranteedthatthestarter battery willreliablystartthe engine.
Thestarter battery must bechargedfirst inthefollowing situations:
RThevehicle's non-operational time must beextended.
RTheBattery Charge Insufficient for StandbyModemessageappears inthe multimediasystem display.
Standby mode is automatically deactivatedwhenthe ignition is switched on.

Driving and driving safety systems
Driving systems andyourresponsibility
Yourvehicle is equipped with driving systemswhich assistyou in driving, parking and maneu‐veringthevehicle. The driving systems are aidsand do notrelieveyou ofyourresponsibility per‐tainingtoroad traffic law.Pay attentiontothetraffic conditions at all times and intervenewhen necessary. Beaware ofthe limitationsregardingthe safe use ofthese systems.
Function oftheradar sensors
Some driving and driving safety systems useradar sensorstomonitorthe area in front of,behind or nexttothevehicle (depending onthevehicle's equipment).
Depending onthevehicle's equipment,theradarsensors are integrated behindthe bumpersand/or behindthe Mercedesstar.Keeptheseparts free of dirt, ice and slush (→page 360).The sensors must not be covered,forexamplebycycleracks,overhanging loads,stickers,foilorfoilstoprotect againststonechipping. Intheevent of damagetothe bumpers orradiator grill,orfollowing a collision impactingthe bumpers orradiator grill, havethe function oftheradar sen‐sorschecked at aqualified specialistworkshop.The driver assistance system may no longerworkproperly.

HOLD function
HOLD functionThe HOLD function holdsthevehicle at astand‐still withoutrequiringyoutodepressthe brakepedal, e.g. whilewaiting in traffic.
The HOLD function is only an aid. Theresponsi‐bilityforthevehicle safelystandingstillremainswiththe driver.
System limitationsThe HOLD function is only intendedtoprovideassistance when driving and is not a sufficientmeans of safeguardingthevehicle againstrollingawaywhenstationary.
RThe incline must not be greaterthan 30%.
Activating/deactivating the HOLD function

Ifyou leavethevehicle while onlythe HOLDfunction is brakingthevehicle,thevehiclecanrollawayinthefollowing situations:
RIfthere is a malfunction inthe system orinthe power supply.
RIfthe HOLD function is deactivatedbydepressingthe accelerator pedal orthebrake pedal, e.g.byavehicle occupant.
RIfthe electrics inthe engine compart‐ment,the battery orthe fuses aretam‐pered with or ifthe battery is disconnec‐ted.
Always deactivatethe HOLD functionand securethevehicle againstrollingawaybefore leavingthevehicle.
NOTEDamagefrom automatic braking
WhenActive Brake Assist,Active DistanceAssistDISTRONIC orthe HOLD function areactivated,thevehicle brakes autonomouslyin certain situations.
Toavoid damagetothevehicle, deactivatethese systems inthefollowing or similar sit‐uations:
Duringtowing
In a carwash
Requirements:RThevehicle isstationary.
RThe driver's door is closed orthe seat belt onthe driver's side isfastened.
RThe engine isrunning or has been automati‐cally switched offbythe ECOstart/stopfunction.
RThe electric parking brake isreleased.
RActive Distance AssistDISTRONIC is not acti‐vated.
