pedestrians, orreducethe effects of sucha colli‐sion.
IfActive Brake Assisthas detected arisk of colli‐sion, awarningtone sounds andtheLdis‐tancewarning lamp lights up inthe instrumentcluster.
Ifyou do notreacttothewarning, autonomousbraking can be initiated in critical situations.
In especially critical situations,Active BrakeAssistcan initiateautonomous braking directly.Inthis case, thewarning lamp andwarningtoneoccur simultaneously with the braking applica‐tion.
Ifyou applythe brakeyourself in a critical situa‐tion or applythe brake during autonomous brak‐ing, situation-dependent braking assistanceoccurs. The brake pressure increases uptomax‐imum full-stop braking if necessary.
If autonomous braking or situation-dependentbraking assistance has occurred, display1appears inthe multifunction display andthenautomatically goes out after a short time.
Ifthe autonomous braking function orthe situa‐tion-dependent braking assistance is triggered, additional preventive measuresfor occupant
protection (PRE-SAFE®) may also be initiated.
\nWARNINGRisk of an accident causedbylimited detection performance ofActiveBrake Assist
Active Brake Assistcannot alwaysclearlyidentify objects and complex traffic situa‐tions.
In suchcases,Active Brake Assistmight:
RGive awarning or brake withoutreason
RNotgive awarning or not brake
Always pay careful attentiontothe traf‐fic situation; do notrely onActive BrakeAssistalone.Active Brake Assistis onlyan aid. The driver isresponsibleformaintaining a suitable distancetothevehicle in front, vehicle speed andforbraking in good time.
Be preparedtobrake or swerveif nec‐essary.
Also observethe system limitations ofActiveBrake Assist.

The individual subfunctions areavailable inthefollowing speedranges:Distancewarning function
The distancewarning function issues awarninginthefollowing situations:
RFrom approximately 4mph (7 km/h), ifyourvehicle is critically closetoavehicle or
pedestrian, you will hear an intermittentwarningtone andtheLdistancewarninglamp lights up inthe instrument cluster.
Brake immediately ortakeevasive action, provi‐ded it is safetodo so andthe traffic situationallowsthis.

RAssistancethrough power-assistedsteering ifit detects a swerving maneuver.
RActivationbyan abruptsteering movementduring a swerving maneuver.
RAssistance during swerving andstraighteningofthevehicle.
RReaction from a speed of approximately12mph (20 km/h) uptoa speed of approx‐imately 43mph (70 km/h).
You can preventthe assistance at any timebyactivelysteering.
\nWARNINGRisk of an accident despiteEvasiveSteering Assist
EvasiveSteering Assist cannotalways clearlyidentify objects and complex traffic situa‐tions.
In addition, thesteering support of EvasiveSteering Assist isgenerally not sufficienttoavoid a collision.
In such cases EvasiveSteering Assist can:
Rgive an unnecessarywarning or provideassistance
Rnot giveawarning or not provide assis‐tance
Always pay careful attentiontothe traf‐fic situation; do notrely on EvasiveSteering Assist alone.
Bereadytobrake andtakeevasiveaction if necessary.
Preventthe assistancebyactivelysteer‐ing in non-critical driving situations.
Drive at an appropriate speed if pedes‐trians are closetothe path ofyourvehi‐cle.
System limitationsFull system performance is notavailablefor afew seconds after switching onthe ignition orafter driving off.
The system may be impaired or may not functioninthefollowing situations:
RIn snow, rain, fog, heavy spray, ifthere isglare, in direct sunlight or ingreatlyvaryingambient light.
RIfthe sensors are dirty, fogged up, damagedor covered.
RIfthe sensors are impaired duetointerfer‐ence fromotherradar sources, e.g.strongradarreflections in parkinggarages.
RIf a loss of tire pressure or a defective tirehas been detected and displayed.
RIn complex traffic situations whereobjectscannotalways be clearly identified.
RIf pedestrians orvehicles movequickly intothe sensor detectionrange.
RIf pedestrians are hiddenby other objects.
RIfthe typical outline of a pedestrian cannotbe distinguished fromthe background.
RIf a pedestrian is not detected as such, e.g.duetospecial clothing orother objects.
ROn bends with a tightradius.
