When the ignition is switched to ACC or
ON, the vehicle lock-out prevention
feature prevents you from locking
yourself out of the vehicle.
All doors and the trunk lid will
automatically unlock if they are locked
using the power door locks with any
door open.
The vehicle lock-out prevention feature
does not operate while the ignition is
switched off.
When all doors and the trunk lid are
locked using the power door lock with
any door or the trunk lid open, the
closed doors and the trunk lid are
locked. After that, when all doors and
the trunk lid are closed, all doors and
the trunk lid are locked. However, if the
key is inside the vehicle, all doors and
the trunk lid are auto matically unlocked.
(With the advanced keyless function)
The beep sound is heard for about 10
seconds to notify the driver that the key
has been left in the vehicle.
(Without the advanced keyless
function)
The horn sound is heard twice to notify
the driver that the key has been left in
the vehicle.
(Door unlock (control) system with
collision detection)
This system automatically unlocks the
doors and the trunk lid in the event the
vehicle is involved in an accident to
allow passengers to get out of the
vehicle immediatel y and prevent being
trapped inside. While the ignition is
switched ON and in the event the vehicle
receives an impact strong enough to
inflate the air bags, all the doors and the
trunk lid are automatically unlocked
after about 6 seconds have elapsed from
the time of the accident.
The doors and the trunk lid may not
unlock depending on how an impact is
applied, the force of the impact, and
other conditions of the accident.
If door-related systems or the battery is
malfunctioning, the doors and the trunk
lid will not unlock.

Break-In Period
No special break-in is necessary, but a few
precautions in the first 1,000 km (600
miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of the vehicle.
Do not race the engine.
Do not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
Do not drive constantly at full-throttle or
high engine rpm for extended periods of
time.
Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
Avoid full-throttle starts.
Saving Fuel and Protection of the Environment
How you operate your Mazda determines
how far it will travel on a tank of fuel. Use
these suggestions to help save fuel and
reduce CO
2.
Avoid long warm-ups. Once the engine
runs smoothly, begin driving.
Avoid fast starts.
Drive at lower speeds.
Anticipate when to apply the brakes
(avoid sudden braking).
Follow the maintenance schedule (page
6-4) and have an Authorized Mazda
Dealer perform inspections and
servicing.
Use the air conditioner only when
necessary.
Slow down on rough roads.
Keep the tires properly inflated.
Do not carry unnecessary weight.
Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal
while driving.
Keep the wheels in correct alignment.
Keep windows closed at high speeds.
Slow down when driving in crosswinds
and headwinds.

Never stop the engine when going down a
hill:
Stopping the engine when going down a
hill is dangerous. This causes the loss of
power steering and power brake control,
and may cause damage to the drivetrain.
Any loss of steering or braking control
could cause an accident.

Shift-Lock System
The shift-lock system prevents shifting out
of P unless the brake pedal is depressed.

To shift from P:
1. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
2. Start the engine.
3. Press and hold the lock-release button.
4. Move the selector lever.
NOTE
When the ignition is switched to ACC or
the ignition is switch ed off, the selector
lever cannot be shifted from P position.
The ignition cannot be switched to OFF
if the selector lever is not in P position.
▼ Shift-Lock Override
If the selector lever will not move from P
using the proper shift procedure, continue
to hold down the brake pedal.
1. Remove the shift-lock override cover
using a cloth-wrapped flat head
screwdriver.
2. Insert a screwdriver and push it down.

3. Press and hold the lock-release button.
4. Move the selector lever.
Take the vehicle to an Authorized Mazda
Dealer to have the system checked.
Transaxle Ranges
The shift position indication in the
instrument cluster illuminates.
Refer to Indication/Indicator Lights on
page 4-26, 4-42, 4-56.
The selector lever must be in P or N
position to operate the starter.
P (Park)
P locks the transaxle and prevents the
front wheels from rotating.
WA R N I N G
Always set the selector lever to P position
and set the parking brake:
Only setting the selector lever to the P
position without using the parking brake to
hold the vehicle is dangerous. If P fails to
hold, the vehicle could move and cause an
accident.
CAUTION
 Shifting into P, N or R while the vehicle is
moving can damage your transaxle.
 Shifting into a driving gear or reverse
when the engine is running faster than
idle can damage the transaxle.
R (Reverse)
In position R, the vehicle moves only
backward. You must be at a complete stop
before shifting to or from R, except under
rare circumstances as explained in
Rocking the Vehicle (page 3-41).

CAUTION
When removing the lens or lamp unit using
a flathead screwdriver, make sure that the
flathead screwdriver does not contact the
interior terminal. If the flathead screwdriver
contacts the terminal, a short circuit may
occur.
NOTE
To replace the bulb, contact an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
Use the protective cover and carton for
the replacement bulb to dispose of the
old bulb promptly and out of the reach
of children.

5 W filament bulb is used in the parking
lights.
1. Make sure the ignition is switched off, and the headligh t switch is off.
2. If you are changing the right bulb, start
the engine, turn the steering wheel all
the way to the left, and turn off engine.
If you are changing the left bulb, turn
the steering wheel to the right.
3. Pull the center of each plastic retainer and remove the retainers.

4. Turn the screw counterclockwise andremove it, and then partially peel back
the mudguard.
5. Turn the socket and bulb assemblycounterclockwise and remove it.
6. Disconnect the bulb from the socket.
7. Install the new bulb in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

To remove the jack
1. Remove the trunk mat.

4. Turn the wing bolt and jack screwcounterclockwise.

1. Insert the wing bo lt into the jack with
the jack screw pointing to the front and
turn the wing bolt clockwise to
temporarily tighten it.
2. Turn the jack screw in the direction
shown in the figure.

3. Turn the wing bolt completely to secure the jack.
NOTE
If the jack is not comp letely secured, it
could rattle while driving. Make sure the
jack screw is sufficiently tightened.
Maintenance
Always keep the jack clean.
Make sure the moving parts are kept
free from dirt or rust.
Make sure the screw thread is
adequately lubricated.

▼Spare Tire
Your Mazda has a temporary spare tire.
The temporary spare tire is lighter and
smaller than a conventional tire, and is
designed only for emergency use and
should be used only for VERY short
periods. Temporary spare tires should
NEVER be used for long drives or
extended periods.
WA R N I N G
Do not install the temporary spare tire on
the front wheels (driving wheels):
Driving with the temporary spare tire on
one of the front driving wheels is
dangerous. Handling will be
affected. You
could lose control of the vehicle, especially
on ice or snow bound roads, and have an
accident. Move a regular tire to the front
wheel and install the temporary spare tire
to the rear.
CAUTION
 When using the temporary spare tire,
driving stability may decrease compared
to when using only the conventional tire.
Drive carefully.
 To avoid damage to the temporary spare
tire or to the vehicle, observe the
following precautions:
 Do not exceed 80 km/h (50 mph).
 Avoid driving over obstacles. Also, do
not drive through an automatic car
wash. This tire's diameter is smaller
than a conventional tire, so the ground
clearance is reduced.
 Do not use a tire chain on this tire
because it will not fit properly.
Do not use your temporary spare tire
on any other vehicle, it has been
designed only for your Mazda.
 Use only one temporary spare tire on
your vehicle at the same time.
To remove the spare tire
1. Remove the trunk mat.

Store the spare tire in the reverse order of
removal. After storing, verify that the
spare tire is stored securely.
