
The scheduled maintenance items listed inscheduled maintenance information areessential to the life and performance of yourvehicle and to its emissions system.
If you use anything other than Lincoln,Motorcraft or Lincoln-authorized parts formaintenance replacements or for service ofcomponents affecting emission control, suchnon-Lincoln parts should be equivalent togenuine Lincoln Motor Company parts inperformance and durability.
Illumination of the service engine soonindicator, charging system warning light orthe temperature warning light, fluid leaks,strange odors, smoke or loss of enginepower could indicate that the emissioncontrol system is not working properly.
An improperly operating or damaged exhaustsystem may allow exhaust to enter thevehicle. Have a damaged or improperlyoperating exhaust system inspected andrepaired immediately.
Do not make any unauthorized changes toyour vehicle or engine. By law, vehicleowners and anyone who manufactures,repairs, services, sells, leases, tradesvehicles, or supervises a fleet of vehicles arenot permitted to intentionally remove anemission control device or prevent it fromworking. Information about your vehicle’semission system is on the Vehicle EmissionControl Information Decal located on or nearthe engine. This decal also lists enginedisplacement.

On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II)
Your vehicle has a computer known as theon-board diagnostics system (OBD-II) thatmonitors the engine’s emission controlsystem. The system protects the environmentby making sure that your vehicle continuesto meet government emission standards. TheOBD-II system also assists a servicetechnician in properly servicing your vehicle.
When the service engine soonindicator illuminates, the OBD-IIsystem has detected a malfunction.Temporary malfunctions may cause theservice engine soon indicator to illuminate.Examples are:
1. Your vehicle has run out of fuel—theengine may misfire or run poorly.
2.Poor fuel quality or water in the fuel—theengine may misfire or run poorly.
3. The fuel fill inlet may not have closedproperly. See Refueling (page 202).
4. Driving through deep water—theelectrical system may be wet.
You can correct these temporarymalfunctions by filling the fuel tank with goodquality fuel, properly closing the fuel fill inletor letting the electrical system dry out. Afterthree driving cycles without these or anyother temporary malfunctions present, theservice engine soon indicator should stay offthe next time you start the engine. A drivingcycle consists of a cold engine startupfollowed by mixed city and highway driving.No additional vehicle service is required.

Engine Emission Control

If the service engine soon indicator remainson, have your vehicle serviced at the firstavailable opportunity. Although somemalfunctions detected by the OBD-II may nothave symptoms that are apparent, continueddriving with the service engine soon indicatoron can result in increased emissions, lowerfuel economy, reduced engine andtransmission smoothness and lead to morecostly repairs.
Readiness for Inspection andMaintenance (I/M) Testing
Some state and provincial and localgovernments may haveInspection/Maintenance (I/M) programs toinspect the emission control equipment onyour vehicle. Failure to pass this inspectioncould prevent you from getting a vehicleregistration.
If the service engine soon indicatoris on or the bulb does not work,your vehicle may need service.See On-Board Diagnostics.
Your vehicle may not pass the I/M test if theservice engine soon indicator is on or notworking properly (bulb is burned out), or ifthe OBD-II system has determined that someof the emission control systems have notbeen properly checked. In this case, thevehicle is not ready for I/M testing.
If the vehicle’s engine or transmission hasjust been serviced, or the battery hasrecently run down or been replaced, theOBD-II system may indicate that the vehicleis not ready for I/M testing. To determine ifthe vehicle is ready for I/M testing, turn theignition key to the on position for 15 secondswithout cranking the engine. If the serviceengine soon indicator blinks eight times, itmeans that the vehicle is not ready for I/Mtesting; if the service engine soon indicatorstays on solid, it means that your vehicle isready for I/M testing.
The OBD-II system checks the emissioncontrol system during normal driving. Acomplete check may take several days.
If the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing, youcan perform the following driving cycleconsisting of mixed city and highway driving:
1. 15 minutes of steady driving on anexpressway or highway followed by 20minutes of stop-and-go driving with atleast four 30-second idle periods.
2.Allow your vehicle to sit for at least eighthours with the ignition off. Then, start thevehicle and complete the above drivingcycle. The vehicle must warm up to itsnormal operating temperature. Oncestarted, do not turn off the vehicle untilthe above driving cycle is complete.
If the vehicle is still not ready for I/M testing,you need to repeat the above driving cycle.

Engine Emission Control

Note:This only functions if your 12-voltbattery has power and the starter can spinthe engine. If vehicle battery voltage is notsufficient, an external 12-volt power sourcesuch as jumper cables, battery charger orjump pack may be required for this featureto function.
Note:Once in this mode, sufficient batteryvoltage must be maintained or your vehiclereturns to park.
WARNING: When doing thisprocedure, you need to take thetransmission out of park (P) which meansyour vehicle can roll freely. To avoidunwanted vehicle movement, always fullyapply the parking brake prior to doing thisprocedure. Use wheels chocks ifappropriate.
1. Do not press the brake pedal. Press theSTART/STOP button.
2. Fully press down on the brake pedal.Keep the brakes applied through step 7.
3. Press the accelerator pedal to the floorand hold through step 7.
4. Press the neutral (N) button on thetransmission selector.
5. Press the neutral (N) button again toenter Stay in Neutral mode.
6. Press and release the push to startbutton, the transmission needs aminimum of 2 seconds to exit park.
7. When neutral (N) is displayed, the brakeand accelerator pedals can be released.
To exit Stay in Neutral mode, select adifferent gear.
A message appears in your informationdisplay screen when your vehicle hasentered Stay in Neutral mode.
Drive (D)
Drive (D) is the normal driving position forthe best fuel economy. The overdrivefunction allows automatic upshifts anddownshifts through gears one through ten.
Adaptive Tow/Haul Mode
WARNING: Do not use tow/haulwhen the road surface is slippery. Failureto follow this instruction could result in theloss of control of your vehicle.
Adaptive tow/haul has two modes, automaticthat is enabled by default and off.
To turn adaptive tow/haul off or on, use theinformation display controls. See GeneralInformation (page 120). The indicator lightilluminates in the instrument cluster.
Key adaptive tow/haul features:
•The system remains in the same mode,even after a key cycle.
•Is only available in normal drive modes(Normal 2H and Normal 4A).
The adaptive tow/haul feature improvestransmission operation when towing a traileror a heavy load. All transmission gear rangesare available when using adaptive tow/haul.

SelectShift™ Automatic Transmission
Your vehicle is equipped with a SelectShiftAutomatic transmission. The SelectShiftAutomatic transmission gives you the abilityto change gears up or down, without aclutch, as desired.
In order to prevent the engine from runningat too low of an RPM, which may cause it tostall, SelectShift still automatically makessome downshifts if it has determined thatyou have not downshifted in time. AlthoughSelectShift makes some downshifts for you,it still allows you to downshift at any time aslong as the SelectShift determines thatdamage to the engine does not occur fromover-revving.
Note:Engine damage may occur if youmaintain excessive engine revving withoutshifting.
SelectShift does not automatically upshift,even if the engine is approaching the RPMlimit. It must be shifted manually by pressingthe + paddle.
Pull the + paddle on the steering wheel toactivate SelectShift.
•Pull the right paddle (+) to upshift.
•Pull the left paddle (–) to downshift.
SelectShift in drive (D):
Provides a temporary manual mode forperforming more demanding maneuverswhere extra control of gear selection isrequired (for example, when towing, downhilldriving or overtaking). This mode holds aselected gear for a temporary period of timedependent on driver inputs (for example,steering or accelerator pedal input).
In SelectShift mode, the instrument clusterdisplays your currently selected gear. If yourequest a gear, but it is not available due tovehicle conditions, low speed, too highengine speed for requested gear selection,the current gear briefly flashes.
Note:At full accelerator pedal travel, thetransmission downshifts for maximumperformance.
Note:In low traction conditions, you can pullaway in second gear using SelectShift. Toperform this operation, select drive (D) andpress the + paddle until 2 is displayed on thecluster. Your vehicle is now ready to movein 2nd gear.

Brake-Shift Interlock Override
WARNING: When doing thisprocedure, you need to take thetransmission out of park (P) which meansyour vehicle can roll freely. To avoidunwanted vehicle movement, always fullyapply the parking brake prior to doing thisprocedure. Use wheels chocks ifappropriate.
WARNING: Do not drive your vehicleuntil you verify that the stoplamps areworking.
WARNING: If the parking brake isfully released, but the brake warning lampremains illuminated, the brakes may notbe working properly. Have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible.
Note:See your authorized dealer as soonas possible if this procedure is used.
Note:For some markets this feature isdisabled.
Note:This feature only functions if your12-volt battery has power.
Use the brake-shift interlock override tomove your transmission from the parkposition in the event of an electricalmalfunction.
1. Apply the parking brake and start theengine before performing this procedure.
2. Locate your brake-shift interlock accessslot. The slot is located below the CDplayer, in your center console storagebin. The access slot does not have alabel.
Note:Make sure that you correctly identifythe access hole as not to damage the CDplayer.
3. Using a tool, press and hold the brakeshift interlock switch. The shift buttonson the instrument panel flash when yourvehicle is in override mode.
4. With the override switch still held, pressthe neutral (N) button to shift from park.
5. Release the override button.
6.Your vehicle can be shifted to the desiredgear and driven, if desired.
7. Release the parking brake.

Automatic Transmission AdaptiveLearning
This feature may increase durability andprovide consistent shift feel over the life ofyour vehicle. A new vehicle or transmissionmay have firm shifts, soft shifts or both. Thisoperation is considered normal and does notaffect function or durability of thetransmission. Over time, the adaptivelearning process fully updates transmissionoperation.
If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck In Mud orSnow
Note:Do not rock your vehicle if the engineis not at normal operating temperature ordamage to the transmission may occur.
Note:Do not rock your vehicle for more thana minute or damage to the transmission andtires may occur, or the engine may overheat.
If your vehicle gets stuck in mud or snow,you may rock it out by shifting betweenforward and reverse gears, stoppingbetween shifts in a steady pattern. Presslightly on the accelerator in each gear.

2H - 4X2
2H turns on when you select NORMAL orCONSERVE. Power is delivered to the rearwheels only. This mode is appropriate fornormal on-road driving on dry pavement andprovides the best fuel economy.
4A - 4X4 Auto
4A turns on when you select EXCITE,NORMAL 4x4 AUTO or SLIPPERY. Itprovides electronically controlled four-wheeldrive with power delivered to all four wheels,as required, for increased traction. 4A iscalibrated in conjunction with Drive Mode.4A in EXCITE is less aggressively tuned andis appropriate for dry road surfaces. 4A inNORMAL 4x4 AUTO is appropriate for allon-road driving conditions, such as dry roadsurfaces, wet pavement, light snow or gravel.4A in SLIPPERY is more aggressively tunedand is appropriate for slippery surfaces, suchas light snow or gravel.
4H - 4X4 High
4H turns on when you select DEEPCONDITIONS. It provides electronicallylocked four-wheel drive power to both thefront and rear wheels for use in off-road orwinter conditions such as deep snow, sandor mud. This mode is not for use on drypavement.
4L - 4X4 Low
4L turns on when you select SLOW CLIMB.It provides electronically locked four-wheeldrive power to both the front and rear wheelsfor use on low traction surfaces, but does sowith additional gearing for increased torquemultiplication. Intended only for off-roadapplications such as deep sand, steepgrades or pulling heavy objects. 4L does notengage when your vehicle is moving above3 mph (5 km/h); this is normal and should beno reason for concern.
Shifting Between 4WD System Modes
Note:Momentarily releasing the acceleratorpedal when a shift in progress messagedisplays improves engagement anddisengagement performance.
Note:Do not perform this operation if therear wheels are slipping.
Note:You may hear some noise as thesystem shifts or engages; this is normal.

Four-Wheel Drive (If Equipped)

Basic Operating Principles
•Do not use SLIPPERY, DEEPCONDITIONS or SLOW CLIMB on dry,hard surfaced roads. Doing so producesexcessive noise, increases tire wear andmay damage drive components. The 4X4system in these modes is only intendedfor consistently slippery or loosesurfaces.
•Drive slower in strong crosswinds whichcan affect the normal steeringcharacteristics of your vehicle.
•When driving your vehicle on surfacesmade slippery by loose sand, water,gravel, snow or ice, proceed with care.
If Your Vehicle leaves the Road
If your vehicle leaves the road, reduce yourvehicle speed and avoid severe braking.When your vehicle speed has been reducedease your vehicle back onto the road. Donot turn the steering wheel sharply whenreturning your vehicle to the road.
It may be safer to stay on the shoulder of theroad and slow down gradually beforereturning to the road. You may lose controlif you do not slow down or if you turn thesteering wheel too sharply or abruptly.
It may be less risky to strike small objects,such as freeway reflectors, with minordamage to your vehicle rather than attempta sudden return to the road which couldcause your vehicle to slide sideways out ofcontrol or roll over. Remember, your safetyand the safety of others should be yourprimary concern.
If your vehicle gets stuck
WARNING: Do not spin the wheelsat over 34 mph (55 km/h). The tires mayfail and injure a passenger or bystander.
Note:Do not rock your vehicle if the engineis not at normal operating temperature,damage to the transmission may occur.

Emergency Maneuvers
In an unavoidable emergency situationwhere a sudden sharp turn must be made,remember to avoid over-driving your vehicle(i.e. turn the steering wheel only as rapidlyand as far as required to avoid theemergency). Excessive steering can resultin loss of vehicle control. Apply smoothpressure to the accelerator pedal or brakepedal when changes in vehicle speed arerequired. Avoid abrupt steering, accelerationand braking. This could result in an increasedrisk of vehicle roll over, loss of vehicle controland personal injury. Use all available roadsurface to bring your vehicle to a safedirection of travel.
In the event of an emergency stop, avoidskidding the tires and do not attempt anysharp steering wheel movements.
