GENERAL INFORMATION
Note: Occasional brake noise is normal. Ifa metal-to-metal, continuous grinding orcontinuous squeal sound is present, thebrake linings may be worn-out and anauthorized dealer should check them. If thevehicle has continuous vibration or shudderin the steering wheel while braking, anauthorized dealer should check your vehicle.
Note:Brake dust may accumulate on thewheels, even under normal drivingconditions. Some dust is inevitable as thebrakes wear and does not contribute tobrake noise. See Cleaning the Wheels(page 385).

Wet brakes result in reduced brakingefficiency. Gently press the brake pedal afew times when driving from a car wash orstanding water to dry the brakes.
Brake Over Accelerator
In the event the accelerator pedal becomesstuck or entrapped, apply steady and firmpressure to the brake pedal to slow thevehicle and reduce engine power. If youexperience this condition, apply the brakesand bring your vehicle to a safe stop. Switchthe engine off, move the transmission to park(P) and apply the parking brake. Inspect theaccelerator pedal and the area around it forany items or debris that may be obstructingits movement.If none are found and thecondition persists, have your vehicle towedto the nearest authorized dealer.
Emergency Brake Assist
Emergency brake assist detects when youbrake heavily by measuring the rate at whichyou press the brake pedal. It providesmaximum braking efficiency as long as youpress the pedal. Emergency brake assistcan reduce stopping distances in criticalsituations.
Anti-lock Brake System
This system helps you maintain steeringcontrol during emergency stops by keepingthe brakes from locking.
This lamp momentarily illuminateswhen you switch the ignition on. Ifthe light does not illuminate duringstart up, remains on or flashes, the anti-lockbraking system may be disabled. Have thesystem checked by an authorized dealer. Ifthe anti-lock brake system is disabled,normal braking is still effective.
If the brake warning lampilluminates with the parking brakereleased, have your brake systemserviced immediately.
It also illuminates momentarily when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lamp isfunctional. If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, or begins to flash atany time, have the system checked by anauthorized dealer.

HILL START ASSIST
WARNING: The system does notreplace the parking brake. When you leaveyour vehicle, always apply the parkingbrake and shift the transmission into park(P) for automatic transmission or first gearfor manual transmission.
WARNING: You must remain in yourvehicle when the system turns on. At alltimes, you are responsible for controllingyour vehicle, supervising the system andintervening, if required. Failure to take caremay result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, serious personal injury or death.
Note:If the engine is revved excessively, orif a malfunction is detected, the system willbe deactivated.
The system makes it easier to pull awaywhen your vehicle is on a slope without theneed to use the parking brake.
When the system is active, your vehicle willremain stationary on the slope for two tothree seconds after you release the brakepedal. This allows you time to move yourfoot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The brakes release automatically when theengine has sufficient torque to prevent yourvehicle from rolling down the grade. This isan advantage when pulling away on a slope,for example from a car park ramp, trafficlights or when reversing uphill into a parkingspace.
The system will activate automatically on anyslope that will cause significant vehiclerollback. For vehicles with a manualtransmission, you can switch this feature offusing the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 120). The systemwill remain on or off depending on how itwas last set.
Note:There is no warning lamp to indicatethe system is either on or off.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with AutoHold, Hill Start Assist will not be availablewhile Auto Hold is active.
Using Hill Start Assist
1. Bring your vehicle to a completestandstill. Keep the brake pedal pressedand select an uphill gear (for example,drive (D) or first (1) when facing uphill orreverse (R) when facing downhill).
2. If the sensors detect that your vehicle ison a slope, the system will activateautomatically.
3. When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle will remain onthe slope without rolling away for abouttwo or three seconds. This hold time willautomatically be extended if you are inthe process of driving off.
4. Drive off in the normal manner. Thebrakes will release automatically.
Switching the System On and Off
You can switch this feature on or off if yourvehicle is equipped with a manualtransmission and an information display. SeeGeneral Information (page 120). The systemremembers the last setting when you startyour vehicle.

Brakes
If your vehicle is not equipped with a manualtransmission and an information display, youcannot turn the system on or off. When youswitch the ignition on, the systemautomatically turns on.
AUTO HOLD
WARNING: The system does notreplace the parking brake. When you leaveyour vehicle, always apply the parkingbrake.
WARNING: You must remain in yourvehicle when the system turns on. At alltimes, you are responsible for controllingyour vehicle, supervising the system andintervening, if required. Failure to take caremay result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: The system will turn offif a malfunction is apparent. Failure to takecare may result in the loss of control ofyour vehicle, serious personal injury ordeath.
The system uses your vehicle's brakes tohold your vehicle at a standstill after you stopyour vehicle and release the brake pedal.For example, Auto Hold can assist you whilestopping at traffic lights or while in trafficjams by holding the brake pressure for youonce you bring your vehicle to a stop.
Make sure you switch the system off beforetowing with your vehicle.
Note:In case of a malfunction in the systemwhile Auto Hold actively holds the vehicle(for example, low power supply), a messageappears in the information display askingyou to press the brake pedal. If you see thismessage, press the brake pedalimmediately.
Note:The system only activates if itrecognizes it is applying enough brakepressure. On a steep hill or slope, make sureyou press the brake pedal sufficiently toactivate the system.
Note:In some cases, Auto Hold might handover to the parking brake. When the parkingbrake applies, the red brake lamp appears.This is normal. When you press theaccelerator pedal, the drive away releasefeature releases the parking brake.
Note:Auto Hold works on all road grades.
Press the button to switch the system on andoff. The indicator light illuminates when youswitch the system on.

When the system is off, your vehicle behavesthe same as a vehicle without Auto Hold.
There is an indicator lamp in the instrumentcluster that has two modes, active andunavailable:
The auto hold active indicatorilluminates in the informationdisplay when the system holdsyour vehicle stationary. When in active mode,press the brake pedal and the Auto Holdbutton to switch the system off.
The auto hold unavailable indicatorilluminates in the informationdisplay when the system is on butunavailable to hold your vehicle (for example,during Active Park Assist, Stay in NeutralMode, or when you do not fasten yourseatbelt or close the door).
Note:Make sure you switch off Auto Holdor use the Stay in Neutral mode before youenter a car wash. See AutomaticTransmission (page 210).
Using Auto Hold
1. Use the brakes to bring your vehicle toa complete stop. The auto hold activeindicator illuminates in the informationdisplay.
2. Release the brake pedal. The systemholds your vehicle at a standstill. Theauto hold active indicator remainsilluminated in the information display.
3. When you press the accelerator pedal,the system releases the brakes and youwill be able to drive off. Once you driveoff, the auto hold active indicator nolonger illuminates in the informationdisplay.
Note:The auto-start-stop system (ifequipped) may stop the engine when youpress the brake pedal. If this occurs, itrestarts once you press the acceleratorpedal. Auto Hold still holds your vehicle ata standstill with the engine off.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Hill descent controlcannot control descent in all surfaceconditions and circumstances, such as iceor extremely steep grades. Hill descentcontrol is a driver assist system and cannotsubstitute for good judgment by the driver.Failure to do so may result in loss ofvehicle control, crash or serious injury.
WARNING: Hill descent control doesnot provide hill hold at zero miles per hour(0 kilometers per hour). When stopped,you must apply the parking brake or placethe vehicle in P (Park), or it may roll away.
Hill descent control allows you to set andmaintain vehicle speed while descendingsteep grades in various surface conditions.
Hill descent control can maintain vehiclespeeds on downhill grades between 2 mph(3 km/h) and 12 mph (20 km/h). Above 20mph (32 km/h), the system remains armed,but you cannot use the system to set ormaintain the descent speed.
Hill descent control requires a cooling downinterval after a period of sustained use. Theamount of time that the feature can remainactive before cooling varies with conditions.The system provides a warning in themessage center and a tone sounds whenthe system is about to disengage for cooling.At this time, manually apply the brakes asneeded to maintain descent speed.
USING HILL DESCENT CONTROL
You can switch the hill descentcontrol on and off through theinformation display.
To increase descent speed, press theaccelerator pedal until you reach the desiredspeed. To decrease descent speed, pressthe brake pedal until you reach the desiredspeed.
Whether accelerating or decelerating, onceyou reach the desired descent speed,remove your feet from the pedals and hilldescent control maintains the chosen vehiclespeed.
Note:You may observe noise from the ABSpump motor during hill descent controloperation. This is a normal characteristic ofthe ABS and should be no reason forconcern.
Hill Descent Modes
•At speeds between 2 mph (3 km/h) and20 mph (32 km/h): Your vehicle maintainsthe speed you desire while in this mode.
•At speeds between 20 mph (32 km/h)and 40 mph (64 km/h): Your vehicle doesnot maintain the speed you desire andyou cannot set your descent speed.
•At speeds above 40 mph (64 km/h): Youneed to switch this feature back on touse.

Hill Descent Control (If Equipped)
When you shift to reverse (R), the sidesensing system provides audible warningswhen your vehicle is moving and obstaclesare detected within 24 in (60 cm) and areinside the driving path of your vehicle. Whenyou stop your vehicle the audible warningstops after two seconds.
Note:Visual distance indication remains onwhen the transmission is in reverse (R).
When you shift to drive (D) or any otherforward gear, for example, low (L), sport (S)or any forward gear in manual transmission,the side sensing system provides audibleand visual distance warnings when yourvehicle is moving below a speed of 5 mph(8 km/h) and obstacles are detected within24 in (60 cm) and are inside the driving pathof your vehicle. Once your vehicle reachesa standstill condition, the audible warningstops after two seconds and visual indicationstops after four seconds.
If the transmission is in neutral (N), the sidesensing system provides visual distanceindication only when your vehicle is movingbelow a speed of 5 mph (8 km/h) and thereis a front or rear parking aid obstacledetected, and the side obstacle is within24 in (60 cm) from the side of your vehicle.When you stop your vehicle the visualdistance indication stops after four seconds.
If the side sensing system is not available,the side distance indicator blocks do notappear.
The side sensing system is not availableunder the following condition:
•If you switch the traction control systemoff.
The side sensing system may not beavailable until you have driven approximatelythe length of your vehicle in order for thesystem to reinitialize if:
•You switch the ignition on, off and backon.
•Your vehicle remains stationary for overtwo minutes.
•The anti-lock brake system is activated.
•The traction control system is activated.
•When the steering wheel angleinformation is not available, the sidesensing system is not available. Thevehicle must be driven at least 492 ft(150 m) above 19 mph (30 km/h) torecover the steering wheel angleinformation.
ACTIVE PARK ASSIST (IF EQUIPPED)
WARNING: You must remain in yourvehicle when the system turns on. At alltimes, you are responsible for controllingyour vehicle, supervising the system andintervening, if required. Failure to take caremay result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: The sensors may notdetect objects in heavy rain or otherconditions that cause interference.

Parking Aids
WARNING: Active park assist doesnot apply the brakes under anycircumstances.
WARNING: You are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle at all times. Thesystem is designed to be an aid and doesnot relieve you of your responsibility todrive with due care and attention. Failureto follow this instruction could result in theloss of control of your vehicle, personalinjury or death.
Active park assist is a multi-step process andmay require you to shift the transmissionmultiple times. Follow the onscreeninstructions until the parking maneuver iscomplete.
If you are uncomfortable with the proximityto any vehicle or object, you may choose tooverride the system by grabbing the steeringwheel, or by taking full control of your vehicleafter pressing the active park assist button.
Keep your hands, hair, clothing and anyloose items clear of the steering wheel whenusing active park assist.
The sensors are on the front and rearbumpers.
Note:Keep the sensors free from snow, iceand large accumulations of dirt.
Note:Do not cover up the sensors.
Note:Do not clean the sensors with sharpobjects.
Note:The sensors may not detect objectswith surfaces that absorb ultrasonic waves.The sensors may falsely detect objects dueto ultrasonic interference caused bymotorcycle exhausts, truck air brakes orhorns, for example.
Note:If you change any tires, the systemmust recalibrate and may not correctlyoperate for a short time.
The system may not correctly operate in anyof the following conditions:
•You use a spare tire or a tire that issignificantly worn more than the othertires.
•One or more tires are incorrectly inflated.
•You try to park on a tight curve.
•Something passes between the frontbumper and the parking space. Forexample, a pedestrian or cyclist.
•The edge of the neighboring parkedvehicle is high off the ground. Forexample, a bus, tow truck or flatbedtruck.
•The weather conditions are poor. Forexample, during heavy rain, snow, fog,high humidity and high temperatures.
Do not use the system if:
•You have attached an add-on accessoryclose to the sensors on the front or rearof your vehicle. For example, a bike rackor trailer.
•You have attached an overhangingobject to the roof. For example, asurfboard.
•The front bumper, rear bumper or theside sensors are damaged.
•The correct tire size is not in use on yourvehicle. For example, a mini-spare tire.

Using Active Park Assist
Selecting an Active Park Assist Mode
Press the button once to activateparallel parking. Press the buttona second time to activateperpendicular parking. If you press thebutton again the system switches off.
If your vehicle is parked and after you switchthe ignition on, you can use the informationdisplay to toggle through the modes. Pressthe button to switch the system on and openthe system menu in the information display.
Note:If your vehicle is parked, the defaultmode is parallel park out assist. However, ifyou did not use active park assist to parallelpark your vehicle, use the informationdisplay to select park out assist.
Note:You can repeatedly press the activepark assist button to toggle through themodes only after moving your vehicleapproximately 33 ft (10 m).
To toggle through the modes, use thebuttons on the information display to selectthe following:
•Parallel parking.
•Perpendicular parking.
•Parallel park out assist.
•Switch the system off.
Note:There is no time limit for togglingthrough the modes.
Parallel Parking
The system detects available parallel parkingspaces and steers your vehicle into thespace. You control the accelerator, gearshiftand brakes. The system visually and audiblyguides you into a parallel parking space.
Press the button once to searchfor a parking space.
Note:You can also switch the system onafter you have already driven partially orcompletely past a parking space. Press theactive park assist button and the systeminforms you if you have recently passed asuitable parking space.
When the vehicle speed is less than 22 mph(35 km/h), the system scans both sides ofyour vehicle for an available parking space.A message and a graphic appear in theinformation display to indicate the system issearching for a parking space. Use thedirection indicator lever to search for aparking space on the driver or passengerside of your vehicle.
Note:The system scans both sides of yourvehicle and offers parking spaces one sideat a time if you do not use the directionindicator.
Note:The system defaults to the passengerside if you do not use the direction indicator.
Drive your vehicle approximately 3 ft (1 m)and parallel to the other parked vehicleswhen searching for a parking space.
