system, and to lock and unlock all the doors
and to open the trunk.
You can also use the remote transmitter to
lock and unlock all the doors and to open the
trunk.1 Key Types and Functions
All the keys have an immobilizer system. The
immobilizer system helps to protect against vehicle
theft. 2 Immobilizer System P. 183
Follow the advice below to prevent damage to the
keys:
•Do not leave the keys in direct sunlight, or in
locations with high temperature or high humidity.
•Do not drop the keys or set heavy objects on them.•Keep the keys away from liquids, dust and sand.
•Do not take the keys apart except for replacing the
battery.
If the circuits in the keys are damaged, the power
system may not activate, and the remote transmitter

Immobilizer System
The immobilizer system prevents a key that has not been pre-registered from
starting the power system. Each key cont ains electronic transmitters that use
electronic signals to verify the key.
Pay attention to the follo wing when pressing the POWER button:
• Do not allow objects that emit strong radio waves near the POWER button.
• Make sure the key is not covered by or touching a metal object.
• Do not bring a key from another vehicle’s immobilizer system near the POWER
button.
• Do not put the key near magnetic items. Electronic devices, such as televisions
and audio systems emit strong magnetic fields. Note that even a key chain can
become magnetic.1 Immobilizer System
NOTICE
Leaving the key in the vehicl e can result in theft or
accidental movement of the vehicle.
Always take the key with you whenever you leave the
vehicle unattended.
Do not alter the system or add other devices to it.
Doing so may damage the system and make your
vehicle inoperable.
Apply and hold the brake pedal before turning the
vehicle on the first time af ter the 12-volt battery has
been disconnected.

Driving
When Driving
Turning on the Power
1.Make sure the parking brake is applied.
u The parking brake indicator (red) comes
on for 30 seconds when you pull up the
electric parking brake switch.
2. Depress the brake pedal.1Turning on the Power
Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal when
starting the power system.
The engine is harder to st art in cold weather and in
thinner air found at altitudes above 8,000 feet (2,400
meters).
When turning on the power system in cold weather,
turn off all electrical accessories such as the lights,
climate control system, and rear defogger in order to
reduce 12-volt battery drain.
If you live in a region where winter is extremely cold,
an engine block heater will improve starting and
warming of the engine. Cons ult a dealer for details.
If exhaust system sounds abnormal or you can smell
exhaust gas inside the vehi cle, have your vehicle
checked by a dealer. There may be a problem with
the engine or exhaust system.
The immobilizer system pr otects your vehicle from
theft.
If an improperly c oded key (or other device) is used,
the power system does not activate. 2 Immobilizer System P. 183
When you turn the power system on, you may feel
the brake pedal slightly sink down. This is normal.

Maintenance
12-Volt Battery
Checking the 12-Volt Battery
The condition of the battery is monitored by a sensor located on the negative
terminal of the battery. If there is a problem with this sensor, the driver information
interface will display a warning message. If this happens, have you vehicle inspected
by a dealer.
If your vehicle’s battery is disconnected or goes dead:
• The audio system is disabled.
2 Reactivating the audio system P. 236
•The clock resets.
2 Clock P. 164
•The immobilizer system needs to be reset.

112-Volt Battery
WARNING: Battery post, terminals,
and related accessories contain lead
and lead compounds.
Wash your hands after handling.
3WARNING
The battery gives off explosive hydrogen
gas during normal operation.
A spark or flame can cause the battery to
explode with enough force to kill or
seriously hurt you.
When conducting any battery
maintenance, wear prot ective clothing and
a face shield, or have a skilled technician do
