PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Always drive and ridewith your seatback upright and the lapbelt snug and low across the hips.
WARNING: To reduce the risk ofinjury, make sure children sit where theycan be properly restrained.
WARNING: Never let a passengerhold a child on his or her lap while yourvehicle is moving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crash.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, shouldalways properly wear their seatbelts,even when an airbag supplementalrestraint system is provided. Failure toproperly wear your seatbelts couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: It is extremelydangerous to ride in a cargo area, insideor outside of a vehicle. In a crash, peopleriding in these areas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed. Do not allowpeople to ride in any area of your vehiclethat is not equipped with seats andseatbelts. Be sure everyone in yourvehicle is in a seat and using a seatbeltproperly.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly morelikely to die than a person wearing aseatbelt.
WARNING: Each seating positionin your vehicle has a specific seatbeltassembly which is made up of onebuckle and one tongue that are designedto be used as a pair. 1) Use the shoulderbelt on the outside shoulder only. Neverwear the shoulder belt under the arm. 2)Never swing the seatbelt around yourneck over the inside shoulder. 3) Neveruse a single belt for more than oneperson.
WARNING: When possible, allchildren 12 years old and under shouldbe properly restrained in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: Seatbelts and seatscan become hot in a vehicle that hasbeen closed up in sunny weather; theycould burn a small child. Check seatcovers and buckles before you place achild anywhere near them.
WARNING: Front and rear seatoccupants, including pregnant women,should wear seatbelts for optimumprotection in an accident.
All seating positions in your vehicle havelap and shoulder seatbelts. All occupantsof the vehicle should always properly weartheir seatbelts, even when an airbagsupplemental restraint system is provided.
The seatbelt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder seatbelts.
•Shoulder seatbelt with automaticlocking mode, (except driver seatbelt).
•Height adjuster at the front outboardseating positions.

Using Seatbelts During Pregnancy
WARNING: Always ride and drivewith your seatback upright and properlyfasten your seatbelt. Fit the lap portionof the seatbelt snugly and low acrossthe hips. Position the shoulder portion ofthe seatbelt across your chest. Pregnantwomen must follow this practice. Seethe following figure.
Pregnant women should always wear theirseatbelt. Position the lap belt portion of acombination lap and shoulder belt lowacross the hips below the belly and wornas tight as comfort allows. Position theshoulder belt to cross the middle of theshoulder and the center of the chest.
Seatbelt Locking Modes
WARNING: You must replace theseatbelt if the automatic lockingretractor or any other seatbelt functionis not operating correctly. Failure toreplace the seatbelt and retractorassembly could increase the risk of injuryin a crash.
All safety restraints in the vehicle arecombination lap and shoulder belts. Thedriver seatbelt has the vehicle sensitivelocking mode. The front outboardpassenger and rear seat seatbelts haveboth the vehicle sensitive locking modeand the automatic locking mode.
Vehicle Sensitive Mode
This is the normal retractor mode, whichallows free shoulder belt lengthadjustment to your movements andlocking in response to vehicle movement.For example, if the driver brakes suddenlyor turns a corner sharply, or the vehiclereceives an impact of about 5 mph(8 km/h) or more, the combinationseatbelts lock to help reduce forwardmovement of the driver and passengers.
In addition, the retractor is designed to lockif you pull the webbing out too quickly. Ifthe seatbelt retractor locks, slowly lowerthe height adjuster to allow the seatbeltto retract. If the retractor does not unlock,pull the seatbelt out slowly then feed asmall length of webbing back toward thestowed position. For rear seatbelts, reclinethe rear seat backrest or push the seatbackrest cushion away from the seatbelt.Feed a small length of webbing backtoward the stowed position.
Automatic Locking Mode
In this mode, the shoulder beltautomatically pre-locks. The belt retractsto remove any slack in the shoulder belt.The automatic locking mode is notavailable on the driver seatbelt.

When to Use the Automatic LockingMode
Use this mode when you install a childsafety seat, except a booster seat, in thepassenger front or rear seating positions.Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in a rear seating position wheneverpossible. See Child Safety (page 16).
How to Use the Automatic LockingMode
1.Buckle the combination lap andshoulder belt.
2.Grasp the shoulder portion and pulldownward until you pull the entire beltout. As the belt retracts, you will heara clicking sound. This indicates theseatbelt is now in the automaticlocking mode.
How to Disengage the AutomaticLocking Mode
Unbuckle the combination lap andshoulder belt and allow it to retractcompletely to disengage the automaticlocking mode and activate the vehiclesensitive (emergency) locking mode.
SEATBELT HEIGHT
ADJUSTMENT (IF EQUIPPED)
WARNING: Position the seatbeltheight adjuster so that the seatbelt restsacross the middle of your shoulder.Failure to adjust the seatbelt correctlycould reduce its effectiveness andincrease the risk of injury in a crash.
1.Pull the button and slide the heightadjuster up or down.
2.Release the button and pull down onthe height adjuster to make sure it islocked in place.
SEATBELT WARNING LAMP
AND INDICATOR CHIME
This lamp illuminates and anindicator chime will sound if thedriver seatbelt has not beenfastened when the vehicle's ignition isturned on.

The remote control allows you to:
•Remotely lock or unlock the vehicledoors.
•Unlock the doors without actively usinga key or remote control (intelligentaccess only).
•Activate the panic alarm.
Car Finder
Press the button twice withinthree seconds. The horn soundsand the direction indicatorsflash. We recommend you use this methodto locate your vehicle, rather than usingthe panic alarm.
Sounding the Panic Alarm
Note:The panic alarm only operates whenthe ignition is off.
Press the button to sound thepanic alarm. Press the buttonagain or switch the ignition on toturn it off.

The typical operating range for yourtransmitter is approximately 32.8 ft (10 m).
A decrease in operating range could becaused by:

The radio frequency used by your remotecontrol can also be used by other radiotransmitters, for example amateur radios,medical equipment, wireless headphones,wireless remote controls, cell phones,battery chargers and alarm systems. If thefrequencies are jammed, you will not beable to use your remote control. You canlock and unlock the doors with the key.
Note:Make sure your vehicle is lockedbefore leaving it unattended.
Note:If you are in range, the remote controlwill operate if you press any buttonunintentionally.
Note: The remote control containssensitive electrical components. Exposureto moisture or impact may cause permanentdamage.

Remote Control
Intelligent Access Key (If Equipped)
The intelligent access keys operate thepower locks. The key must be in yourvehicle to use the push button start.
Remove Key Blade
The intelligent access key also contains aremovable key blade that you can use tounlock your vehicle.
Push the release button and pull the keyblade out.
Replacing the Battery
Note:Refer to local regulations whendisposing of transmitter batteries.
Note:Do not wipe off any grease on thebattery terminals or on the back surface ofthe circuit board.
Note: Replacing the battery does not erasethe program med key from your vehicle. Thetransmitter should operate normally.
A message appears in the informationdisplay when the remote control batteryis low. See Information Messages (page91). See Information Messages (page ?).
The remote control uses one coin-typethree-volt lithium battery CR2450 orequivalent.

LOCKING AND UNLOCKING
Note:All doors will be unlocked 10 secondsafter the airbag deploys due to impact andfollowing this the hazard warning flasherswill flash.
Power Door Locks
The power door lock switch is located atthe front part of the front inner handles.

Door Lock Indicator
A LED on the power door lock controlilluminates when you lock the door.
They will remain illuminated for up to fiveminutes after you switch the ignition off.
Door Lock Switch Inhibitor
When you electronically lock your vehiclewhile the ignition is off, the power door lockswitch will no longer operate after twentyseconds. You must unlock your vehicle withthe remote control, or switch the ignitionon to restore function to these switches.You can switch this feature on or off in theinformation display See InformationMessages (page 91).
Autolock
The autolock feature will lock all the doorswhen:
•all doors and swing gate are closed,
•the ignition is on,
•you shift into any gear putting thevehicle in motion, and
•the vehicle attains a speed greater than10 mph (20 km/h)
If you open one or more doors, the autolockfeature will repeat when:
•the vehicle speed has been less than9.3 mph (15 km/h) for at least twoseconds; and
•your vehicle meets the autolockconditions again.
Remote Control
You can use the remote control any timethe vehicle is not running.
When the ignition is on and your vehiclespeed is at or below 3.1 mph (5 km/h), youcan use the remote control to lock andunlock the doors.
Unlocking the Doors
Note: You can unlock the driver door withthe key. Use the key when the remotecontrol is not functioning.

Note: When you lock your vehicle forseveral weeks, the remote control switchesoff. Your vehicle must be unlocked and theengine started using the key. Unlocking andstarting your vehicle once will enable theremote control.
Press this button to unlock alldoors. Turn signals will flashonce.
Reprogramming the UnlockingFunction
You can reprogram the unlocking functionto unlock only driver´s door at the firstpress and unlock the others at the secondpress, if this last was performed withinthree seconds after the first press. To doso, using the remote control, press andhold lock and unlock buttons together forfour seconds. Turn signals will flash twice.To revert, repeat the process. You can alsoreprogram it using the cluster menu. SeeInformation Messages (page 91).
Locking the Doors
Press the button to lock all thedoors. The direction indicatorswill flash.
Press the button again within threeseconds to confirm that all the doors areclosed. The doors will lock again, the hornwill sound once and the direction indicatorswill flash if all the doors and the luggagecompartment are closed.
Note:If hood or luggage compartment isopen when you press the button once, thedirection indicators will not flash. Thisindicates your vehicle did not lock. If a reardoor, the luggage compartment or the hoodis open (on vehicles with an anti-theftalarm) when you press the button againwithin three seconds, the horn sounds twiceand the direction indicators will not flash.This indicates your vehicle locked but thereis one or more items open.
Note:The direction indicators will flash aslocking feedback only when ignition is OFF.
Automatic Relocking (If Equipped)
The doors will relock automatically if youdo not open a door within 45 seconds ofunlocking the doors with the remotecontrol. The door locks and the alarm willreturn to their previous state.
This feature will be disabled when youreceive the vehicle.You can switch thisfeature on or off in the information display.See Information Displays (page 88).

Turn the top of the key toward the front ofyour vehicle.
Unlocking with the Key
Note: If the child safety locks are on andyou pull the interior handle, you will onlyswitch off the emergency locking, not thechild safety lock. You can only open thedoors using the external door handle.
Note:If the doors have been unlocked usingthis method, the doors must be lockedindividually until the central locking functionhas been repaired.
Turn the top of the key toward the rear ofyour vehicle. You can unlock all otherdoors individually by pulling the interiordoor handles.
Note:When the central locking functionfails to operate, lock the doors individuallyusing the key in the position shown.
