Safedrivingisdirectlyrelatedtotheconditionof
thevehicle,thedriveraswellasthedriver’sabili-
ty toconcentrateontheroadwithoutbeingdis-
tracted.
Thedriverisresponsibleforthesafetyoftheve-
hicleandallofitsoccupants.Ifyourabilityto
driveisimpaired,safetyrisksforeverybodyinthe
vehicleincreaseand youalsobecomeahazardto
everyoneelseontheroad>A\.Therefore:
>Donotletyourselfbedistractedbypassengers

Inacollision,airbagsmustinflatewithinthe
blinkofaneyeandwithconsiderableforce.The
supplementalairbagscancauseinjuriesifthe
driverorthefrontseatpassengerisnotseated
properly.Thereforeinordertohelptheairbagto
doitsjob,itisimportant,bothasadriverandas
apassengertositproperlyatalltimes.
Bykeepingroombetweenyourbodyandthe
steeringwheelandthefrontofthepassenger
compartment,theairbagcaninflatefullyand
completelyandprovidesupplementalprotection
incertainfrontalcollisions>page248,Correct

It'sespeciallyimportantthatchildrenareproper-
lyrestrained>page285.
Thereisalotthatthedriverandthepassengers
canandmustdotohelptheindividualsafetyfea-
turesinstalledinyourAudiworktogetherasa
system.
Properseatingpositionisimportantso thatthe
frontairbagonthedriver sidecandoitsjob.If
youhaveaphysicalimpairmentorconditionthat
preventsyoufromsittingproperlyonthedriver
seatwiththesafetybeltproperlyfastenedand
reachingthepedals,orifyouhave concernswith
regardtothefunctionoroperationoftheAd-
vancedAirbagSystem,pleasecontactyourau-
thorizedAudidealerorqualifiedworkshop,or
callAudi CustomerRelationsat1-800-822-2834
forpossiblemodificationstoyourvehicle.
Whentheairbagsystemdeploys,agas generator
willfilltheairbags,breakopenthepaddedcov-
ers,andinflatebetweenthesteeringwheeland
thedriverandbetweentheinstrumentpaneland
thefrontpassenger.Theairbagswilldeflateim-
mediatelyafterdeploymentsothatthefrontoc-
cupantscan seethroughthewindshieldagain
withoutinterruption.
Allofthistakesplaceintheblinkofaneye,so
fastthatmanypeopledon'tevenrealizethatthe
airbagshavedeployed.Theairbagsalsoinflate
withagreatdeal offorceandnothingshould be
intheirwaywhentheydeploy.Frontairbagsin
combinationwithproperlywornsafetybeltsslow
downandlimittheoccupant'sforwardmove-
ment.Togethertheyhelptopreventthedriver
andfrontseatpassengerfromhittingparts of
theinsideofthevehiclewhilereducingtheforces
actingontheoccupantduringthecrash.Inthis
waytheyhelptoreducetheriskofinjurytothe
headandupperbodyinthecrash.Airbagsdonot
protectthearmsorthelowerpartsofthebody.
Bothfrontairbagswillnotinflateinallfrontal
collisions.Thetriggeringoftheairbagsystemde-
pendsonthevehicledecelerationratecausedby
thecollisionandregisteredbytheelectroniccon-
trolunit.Ifthisrateisbelowthereferencevalue
programmedintothecontrolunit,theairbags
willnot betriggered,eventhoughthecarmaybe
badlydamagedasaresultofthecollision.Vehi-
cledamage,repaircostsoreventhelackofvehi-
cledamageisnotnecessarilyanindicationof
whetheranairbagshouldinflateornot.
Sincethecircumstanceswillvary considerably
betweenonecollisionandanother,itisnotpossi-
bletodefinearangeofvehiclespeedsthatwill
cover everypossiblekindandangleofimpact
thatwillalwaystriggertheairbags.Important
factorsinclude,forexample,thenature(hardor
soft)oftheobjectwhichthecarhits,theangleof
impact,vehiclespeed,etc.Thefrontairbagswill>

EventhoughyourvehicleisequippedwithanAd-
vancedAirbagSystem,makecertainthatallchil-
dren,especiallythose12yearsandyounger,al-
waysrideinthebackseatproperlyrestrainedfor
theirageandsize.Theairbagonthepassenger
sidemakesthefrontseatapotentiallydangerous
placeforachildtoride.Thefrontseatisnot the
safestplaceforachildinaforward-facingchild
safetyseat.Itcanbeaverydangerousplacefor
aninfantorachildinarearward-facingseat.
TheAdvancedAirbagSysteminyourvehiclehas
beencertifiedtocomplywiththerequirements
ofUnitedStatesFederalMotorVehicleSafety

bleatthetimeyourvehiclewasmanufactured.
Accordingtorequirements,thefrontAdvanced
AirbagSystemonthepassengersidehasbeen
certifiedfor“suppression”forinfantsofabout
12montholdandyoungerandfor“lowriskde-
ployment”forchildrenaged3 to6yearsold(as
definedinthestandard).
ThePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF9;lightinthe
headlinertellsyouwhenthefrontAdvancedAir-
bagonthepassengersidehasbeenturnedoffby
theelectroniccontrolunit.
Eachtimeyouturnontheignition,thePASSEN-

denmaneuver.Objectsneartheairbagscan
flydangerouslythroughthepassengercom-
partmentandcauseinjury,particularly
whentheseatisreclinedandtheairbagsin-
flate.

ThefrontAdvancedAirbagSystemforthefront
seatoccupantsisnotasubstituteforyoursafety
belts.Rather,itispartoftheoveralloccupantre-
straintsysteminyourvehicle.Alwaysremember
thattheairbagsystemcanonly helptoprotect
you,ifyouaresittingupright,wearingyoursafe-
tybeltandwearingitproperly.Thisiswhyyou
and
yourpassengersmustalwaysbeproperlyre-
strained,notjustbecausethelawrequiresyouto
be.
TheAdvancedAirbagSysteminyourvehiclehas
beencertifiedtomeetthe“lowrisk”require-
mentsfor3and6year-oldchildrenonthepas-
sengersideandverysmalladultsonthedriver
side.Thelowriskdeploymentcriteriaare intend-
edtohelpreducetheriskofinjurythroughinter-
actionwiththefrontairbagthatcanoccur,for
example,bybeingtooclosetothesteeringwheel
andinstrumentpanelwhentheairbaginflates.
Inaddition,thesystemhasbeencertifiedto
complywiththe“suppression”requirementsof
theSafetyStandard,toturnoffthefrontairbag
forinfants12monthsoldandyoungerwhoare
restrainedonthefrontpassengerseatinchildre-
straintsthatarelistedintheStandard

Manycountriesandallstatesofthe United
StatesandprovincesofCanadahavelawsrequir-
ingthe useofapprovedchildrestraintsystems
forinfantsandsmallchildren.
Inafrontalcrashataspeedof20-35mph(30-
56km/h)theforces actingona13-pound(6kg)
infantwillbemorethan20timestheweightof
thechild.Thismeanstheweightofthechild
wouldsuddenlybemorethan260pounds
(120kg).Undertheseconditions,onlyanappro-
priatechildrestraintproperlyusedcanreduce
theriskofseriousinjury.Childrestraints,like
adultsafetybelts,mustbeusedproperlytobe
effective.Usedimproperly,they canincreasethe
riskof seriousinjuryinanaccident.
Allchildren,especiallythose12yearsand young-
