12 Coolant temperature warning “ ”
This icon appears if the coolant temper-
ature reaches 117
C (242 F) or high-
er. Stop the vehicle and turn off the
engine. Allow the engine to cool.
NOTICE
ECA10022
Do not continue to operate the en-gine if it is overheating.
Oil pressure warning “ ”
This icon appears when the engine oil
pressure is low. When the main switch
is first turned to ON, engine oil pressure
has yet to build, so this icon will come
on and stay on until the engine has
been started. NOTICE
ECA21210
If the warning light comes on when
the engine is running, stop the en-
gine immediately and check oil level.
If the oil level is below the minimum
level, add sufficient oil of the recom-
mended type to raise it up to the cor-
rect level. If the oil pressure warning
light remains on even if the oil level
is correct, immediately turn the en- gine off and have a Yamaha dealer
check the vehicle.
Error mode warning “Err”
When an internal error occurs (e.g.,
communication with a system controller
has been cut off), the error mode warn-
ing will appear as follows.
“Err” and “ ” indicates an ECU error.
“Err” and “ ” indicates an SCU error.
“Err” only indicates an HCU (hydraulic
control unit) error.TIPDepending on the nature of the error,
the display may not function properly
and YRC settings may be impossible to
change. Additionally, ABS and UBS
may not function properly. Use extra
care when braking and have a Yamahadealer check the vehicle immediately.

12 the neutral position, do not
coast for long periods of time
with the engine off, nor tow the
motorcycle for long distances.
The transmission is properly lu-
bricated only when the engine is
running. Inadequate lubrication
may damage the transmission.
Except when using the quick
shift system, always pull the
clutch lever when changing
gears to avoid damaging the en-
gine, transmission, and drive-train.
EAU16811
Tips for reducing fuel
consumptionFuel consumption depends largely on
your riding style. Consider the following
tips to reduce fuel consumption:
Shift up swiftly, and avoid high en-
gine speeds during acceleration.
Do not rev the engine while shifting
down, and avoid high engine
speeds with no load on the engine.
Turn the engine off instead of let-
ting it idle for an extended length of
time (e.g., in traffic jams, at traffic
lights or at railroad crossings).
EAU16842
Engine break-inThere is never a more important period
in the life of your engine than the period
between 0 and 1600 km (1000 mi). For
this reason, you should read the follow-
ing material carefully.
Since the engine is brand new, do not
put an excessive load on it for the first
1600 km (1000 mi). The various parts in
the engine wear and polish themselves
to the correct operating clearances.
During this period, prolonged full-throt-
tle operation or any condition that might
result in engine overheating must be
avoided.
EAU17085
0–1000 km (0–600 mi)

NOTICE: After 1000 km (600

be changed and the oil filter car-
tridge or element replaced.

TIP
Air filter
This model’s air filter uses a disposable oil-coated paper element. This el ement cannot be cleaned with compressed
air, doing so will only damage it.
The air filter element needs to be replaced more fr equently when riding in unusually wet or dusty areas.
Hydraulic brake service
Regularly check the front and rear brake fluid levels. Replenish if necessary.
Every two years replace the rear brake master cylinder, the internal components of the front brake master cylinder, the brake calipers, and change the brake fluid.
Replace the brake hoses every four years or sooner if cracked, damaged, or if any section of the stainless steel brakehose has turned black.

CanisterThis model is equipped with a canister
to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor
into the atmosphere. Before operating
this vehicle, make sure to check the fol-
lowing:
Check each hose connection.
Check each hose and canister for
cracks or damage. Replace if dam-
aged.
Make sure that the canister breath-
er is not blocked, and if necessary,
clean it.

Engine oil and oil filter
cartridgeThe engine oil level should be checked
before each ride. In addition, the oil
must be changed and the oil filter car-
tridge replaced at the intervals speci-
fied in the periodic maintenance and
lubrication chart.
To check the engine oil level 1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face and hold it in an upright posi-
tion. A slight tilt to the side can
result in a false reading.
2. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it
off.
3. Wait a few minutes until the oil set- tles, and then check the oil level
through the check window located
at the bottom-left side of the crank-
case.TIPThe engine oil should be between theminimum and maximum level marks. 4. If the engine oil is at or below the
minimum level mark, add sufficient
oil of the recommended type to
raise it to the correct level.
TIPCheck the oil filler cap O-ring for dam-age, and replace it if necessary.
To change the engine oil (with or
without oil filter cartridge replace-
ment)1. Remove cowling A and panel B. (See page 7-8.)
2. Start the engine, warm it up for

2. To atmosphere

TIPMake sure that the O-ring is properlyseated. 7. Install the new oil filter cartridge with an oil filter wrench, and then
tighten it to the specified torque
with a torque wrench. 8. Install the engine oil drain bolt and
its new gasket, and then tighten
the bolt to the specified torque.
9. Refill with the specified amount of the recommended engine oil.
TIPBe sure to wipe off spilled oil on any
parts after the engine and exhaust sys-tem have cooled down.NOTICE
ECA11621
In order to prevent clutch slip-
page (since the engine oil also
lubricates the clutch), do not
mix any chemical additives. Do
not use oils with a diesel speci-
fication of “CD” or oils of a high-
er quality than specified. In
addition, do not use oils labeled
“ENERGY CONSERVING II” or
higher.
Make sure that no foreign mate-rial enters the crankcase.
