8. Check for oil leakage. If oil leakage isfound, check for the cause.EBU36061Differential gear oilCheck the oil level and change the differential
gear oil at the intervals specified in the gener-
al maintenance and lubrication chart.NOTICEECB03600When checking or changing the differen-
tial gear oil, make sure that no foreign ma-
terial enters the differential gear case. If
necessary, clean the differential gear oil
filler bolt and surrounding area.
Checking the differential gear oil level 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Remove the differential gear oil filler bolt
and its gasket, and then check the oil lev-
el. It should be up to the brim of the filler
hole.
3. If the level is low, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the
specified level.
Tightening torque: Final gear oil filler bolt:23 N·m (2.3 kgf·m, 17 lb·ft)
Recommended oil: SAE 80 API GL-4 Hypoid gear oil
Oil quantity: 0.18 L (0.19 US qt, 0.16 Imp.qt)

4. Check the gasket for damage, and re-place it if necessary.
5. Install the differential gear oil filler bolt and its gasket, and then tighten the bolt
to the specified torque.
Changing the differential gear oil 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Place an oil pan under the differential gear case to collect the used oil.
3. Remove the differential gear oil filler bolt, the differential gear oil drain bolt and their
gasket to drain the oil. 4. Install the differential gear oil drain bolt
and its new gasket, and then tighten the
bolt to the specified torque.
5. Refill the differential gear case with the recommended oil.Tightening torque:Differential gear oil filler bolt:23 N·m (2.3 kgf·m, 17 lb·ft)

TIPGL-4 is a quality and additive rating; GL-5
rated hypoid gear oils may also be used.
If desired, an SAE 80W-90 hypoid gear oil
may be used instead. 6. Check the oil filler bolt gasket for dam-
age, and replace it if necessary.
7. Install the differential gear oil filler bolt and its gasket, and then tighten the bolt
to the specified torque.
8. Check for oil leakage. If oil leakage is found, check for the cause.
EBU35111CoolantThe coolant level should be checked regular-
ly. In addition, the coolant must be changed
at the intervals specified in the periodic main-
tenance chart.TIPIf genuine Yamaha coolant is not available,
use an ethylene glycol antifreeze containing
corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines and
mix with distilled water at a 1:1 ratio.
Tightening torque:Differential gear oil filler bolt:23 N·m (2.3 kgf·m, 17 lb·ft)
Recommended coolant:YAMALUBE coolant
Coolant quantity: Coolant reservoir (up to full level):0.31 L (0.33 US qt, 0.28 Imp.qt)
Radiator (including all routes): 3.75 L (3.96 US qt, 3.30 Imp.qt)

Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket
and its mating surface, and then wipe off any
grime from the spark plug threads.TIPIf a torque wrench is not available when in-
stalling the spark plug, a good estimate of the
correct torque is 1/4–1/2 turn past finger tight.
However, the spark plug should be tightened
to the specified torque as soon as possible. NOTICEECB02900Do not use any tools to remove or install
the spark plug cap, otherwise the ignition
coil coupler may be damaged. The spark
plug cap may be difficult to remove be- cause the rubber seal on the end of the cap
fits tightly. To remove the spark plug cap,
simply twist it back and forth while pulling
it out; to install it, twist it back and forth
while pushing it in.
EBU35423Air filter maintenanceThis model is equipped with two air filter ele-
ments, a primary foam-type air filter and a
secondary paper-type air filter.

2. Remove the tailpipe bolts.
3. Remove the tailpipe by pulling it out ofthe muffler, and then remove the gasket.
4. Tap the tailpipe lightly, and then use a wire brush to remove any carbon depos-
its from the spark arrester portion of the
tailpipe and inside of the tailpipe housing. 5. Install the gasket, and then insert the tail-
pipe into the muffler and align the bolt
holes.
6. Install the tailpipe bolts and tighten them

use, resulting in improper fuel/air supply or
engine noise. To preven t this, the valve clear-
ance must be adjusted regularly. This adjust-
ment however, should be left to a
professional Yamaha service technician.EBU32470BrakesReplacement of brake components requires
professional knowledge. Brake service
should be performed by a Yamaha dealer.
WARNING
EWB02572Operating with improperly serviced or ad-
justed brakes could lead to a loss in brak-
ing ability and an accident. EBU35150Checking the front and rear brake padsCheck each brake pad for damage and mea-
sure the lining thickness. If a brake pad is
damaged or if the lining thickness is less than
1.0 mm (0.04 in), have a Yamaha dealer re-
place the brake pads as a set.
The wheels need to be removed to check the
brake pads. (See pages 8-55, 8-57 for wheel
removal and installation procedures.)

Tighten the bead lock bolts to the specified
torque in a crisscross pattern.EBU32620Tire replacementAlways use the same size and type of tires
recommended in this owner’s manual. The
tires that came with your Yamaha YXZ1000Rwere designed to match the performance ca-
pabilities and to provide the best combination
of handling, braking, and comfort. It is best to
replace all four tires at the same time. If that is
not possible, you must replace the tires in
pairs (front or rear) with tires of the same size
and type as the origin
als. Never replace just
one tire.
WARNING
EWB03390Installing improper tires on your Yamaha
YXZ1000R can affect handling and stabili-
ty. This can cause a loss of control. The tires listed below have been approved by
Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America for this model.

EBU33090Wheel installation1. Install the wheel and the nuts.
2. Lower the vehicle so that the wheel is onthe ground.
3. Tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque.
WARNING
EWB03400Do not reverse the rims on your Yamaha
YXZ1000R to widen the track width. In-
stalling wheels improperly increases the
risk of wheel failure and accidents. EBU35232BatteryThis model is equipped with a 12–volt VRLA
(valve–regulated lead–acid) battery. There is
no need to check the electrolyte or to add dis-
tilled water. However, the battery lead con-
nections need to be checked and tightened,
and the battery terminals cleaned if corroded.
If the battery seems to have discharged, re-
charge it as soon as possible.
