EBU2678AEngine oil and oil filter elementThe engine oil level should be checked before
each ride. In addition, the oil must be changed and
the oil filter element replaced at the intervals spec-
ified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication
chart.
To check the engine oil level1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Start the engine, warm it up until the engine oil has reached a normal temperature of 60
°C (140 °F), let it continue to idle for ten sec-
onds or more, and then turn the engine off.TIPTo achieve the proper engine oil temperature for
an accurate oil level reading, the engine must have
first completely cooled down, and then warmed
up again for several minutes to normal operating
temperature. 3. Remove the engine oil tank filler cap, andthen wipe the engine oil dipstick off with a
clean rag.
4. Insert the dipstick in the filler hole (without screwing it in), and then remove it again to
check the oil level.
TIPThe engine oil should be between the minimum
and maximum level marks. 5. If the engine oil is at or below the minimumlevel mark, add sufficient oil of the recom-
mended type through the engine oil tank filler

then remove the engine oil tank drain bolt and
its gasket.
TIPSkip steps 6–9 if the oil filter element is not being

rings.

10. Install the crankcase engine oil drain bolt, the
engine oil tank drain bolt and their new gas-
ket, and then tighten the bolts to the specified
torques.
11. Install the crankcase engine oil filler bolt and its new O-ring, and then tighten the oil filler
bolt to the specified torque.
12. Pour only 1.3 L (1.37 US qt, 1.14 Imp.qt) of the specified amount of the recommended
engine oil through the engine oil tank filler
hole, and then install and tighten the oil tank
filler cap.
13. Start the engine, rev it several times, and then turn it off. 14. Remove the engine oil tank filler cap, and
then gradually fill the oil tank with the remain-
ing oil quantity while regularly checking the oil
level on the dipstick.
15. Check the O-ring for damage, and replace it if necessary.
16. Install and tighten the engine oil tank filler cap.
TIPBe sure to wipe off spilled oil on any parts after the
engine and exhaust system have cooled down. NOTICEECB00301In order to prevent clutch slippage (since the
engine oil also lubricates the clutch), do not

Crankcase engine oil drain bolt:23 N·m (2.3 kgf·m, 17 lb·ft)
Engine oil tank drain bolt: 19 N·m (1.9 kgf·m, 14 lb·ft)
Tightening torque: Crankcase engine oil filler bolt:12 N·m (1.2 kgf·m, 8.9 lb·ft)Recommended oil: See page 10-1.
Oil quantity: Without oil filter element replacement:1.75 L (1.85 US qt, 1.54 Imp.qt)
With oil filter element replacement: 1.85 L (1.96 US qt, 1.63 Imp.qt)

88. Wash the sponge material gently but thor-
oughly in solvent. WARNING! Always use
parts cleaning solvent. Never use low-
flash-point solvents or gasoline because
the engine could catch fire or explode.

not twist the sponge material when
squeezing it.

11. Apply Yamaha foam air filter oil or other qual- ity foam air filter oil to the sponge material.TIPThe sponge material should be wet but not drip-
